There are many types of dog collars and leashes that you can use for helping train your new puppy. However, while your puppy is as young as seven to ten weeks of age, we recommend that soft cotton collars be put on and off the puppy's neck several times during the day to help the pup adjust to the sensation of wearing the collar. Once your puppy is no longer stopping every two feet and scratching at his neck, you can move along and attach a light soft line to his collar and let him drag the line around the house.

You must supervise this event so he will not get tangled up or eat the line. Generally, after a couple of days the puppy will run around the house and not be intimidated by the drag-line. This is the time for you to pick up the line occasionally and walk your puppy around the house. If your pup stops walking, do not pull him, instead induce him with friendly gestures such as a waving hand or "baby" talk until he gets up and walks. At this time you will praise him wildly for moving along with you.

In order to continue making his leash time positive, it is a good idea to drop the line at times so that your puppy will have no opposition from tension on the line. When you notice him moving well along with you, break into a play session. The more comfortable your pup is with the leash the better it will be for both of you in the very near future. If you practice this exercise in your home with your young puppy, then it will pay off when you go for your outdoor walks.

Puppies should wear long light lines for two reasons. First, a long line conditions your puppy to believe that you have influence at a great distance. Second, short leashes will almost always create forging at the end of the line from the opposition of the tight line. Cotton, nylon, leather, and coated steel cable are all possibilities for a comfortable long line. The extendible-type leashes for bathroom walks and training the "come" command, although they do not provide very good control in busy situations.

The term “etiquette” refers to an acceptable mode of social behavior. Unlike commands, which are executed only on order, manners color behavior at all times. Unless you and your dog still live in a cave, he will need some manners. Naturally, your pup's mother began this phase of his education, teaching him to play gently, to wait his turn, to hold still for his bath, to greet her with deference, to stay close to home, etc.

Now you will continue her good work, housebreaking your pup, helping him to accept your absences, teaching him to walk on a leash, respect your privacy, behave like a gentleman - not a wild animal. Two aspects of your dog's nature make it possible for you to teach him manners and train him to obey commands. First, he is a pack animal. His pack instincts allow him to respect and revere a strong, clear leader. In fact, his mother gave him a wonderful model for how an alpha dog should conduct herself - with supreme confidence, with courage, with fairness, with intelligence, with final authority, with affection.

The second aspect of your dog's nature that makes him a near perfect pet is that he is a den animal with an instinct to keep his sleeping quarters clean. It is this instinct that will allow you to rapidly housebreak your pup. And housebreaking is the natural place to begin his lessons in etiquette.

Once you have made a decision to purchase a Golden Retriever pup, you will wonder about how to select the right dog breeder. However careful you may be while purchasing your pup, you can never say if the pup you have purchased will grow into a strong, healthy adult. You will have to really trust the person you buy the pup from even to surmise that it will grow into a healthy adult dog.

You have three options before you when you are faced with the task of selecting the right dog breeder. There are various types of dog breeders, and you will have to carefully consider each category. Consider the following three options along with some information about the same that will help you select the right dog breeder.

A Pet Shop

Pet shops are the worst places to purchase your Golden Retriever pup. The pups on sale in pet shops are usually reared in poor conditions and are, therefore, of poor quality. Since pet shops emphasize on quantity and not quality, they naturally do not focus on the quality of the animals for sale. They profit a lot because they do not invest a lot of money either in the breeding or in the care of pups.

Pet shops rely on the customers' habit of purchasing on impulse. Usually, customers who purchase pets on the spur of the moment hardly take the time to make a study of the puppies that are on sale.

If you are looking for a pup that can form part of your family, you want a healthy pup. So, you had better not rely on a pet shop for one. There are far better places to purchase quality Golden Retriever pups.

Backyard Breeders

You will discover that backyard breeders are also not the right people to purchase your puppy from. Most backyard breeders have a few Golden Retrievers. They allow the female to have a couple of litters for the sheer fun of seeing the pups, after which they spay the female. So, backyard breeders are not really bothered about the quality of the pups. Neither do they go the extra mile in taking care of the litters. In other words, backyard breeders breed dogs for the fun of it and to make a little money.

Moreover, backyard breeders have very limited knowledge of the breed and its care. They are unfamiliar with the various problems related to breeding, and they don't care either. They only breed Golden Retriever pups for the sake of it and then sell off the pups at the highest price they can possibly get.

Hobby Breeders

The best decision you can ever make with regard to the purchase of a Golden Retriever pup is to make a purchase from one of the hobby breeders. Rarely do hobby breeders produce pups of poor quality because they focus on quality.

Unlike backyard breeders, hobby breeders are committed and loyal. They care more for their pups and consider them to be more than just a lucrative hobby. This is not to deny that they make money by breeding dogs; they do, but they care more for the general well-being, quality, and health of their pups.

Moreover, hobby breeders commit themselves to seeing that you get a high-quality Golden Retriever pup. They are responsible for each of their pups and can vouch for them. So, pay a visit to a hobby breeder if you want a healthy, high-quality pup that will give value for money.

Making a purchase from a hobby breeder will ensure that your dog will grow into a wonderful, healthy adult Golden Retriever.

We've been taking our 5 month old Boxer Cross to the dog park for a few weeks now. Almost every dog there plays very well with him, or just ignores him as older dogs will do.

However, there is this one 2 year old Husky that will single him out, run him down, grab his throat, slam him to the ground and hold him there until someone pulls him off. There could be 20 other dogs at the park, but as soon as our dog makes his entrance we'll see this Husky come running from the other side of the park to take him down.

We understand the dominance factor and that the Husky may be trying to set the tone and let my dog know who's boss. But other pups and dogs who show up never get the same kind of "welcome" from the Husky as ours does.

What behavior could my dog be exerting to warrant this action from the Husky? Our dog is NOT aggressive, but is fearless and will welcome play from any dog of any size. So when he sees the Husky coming he play poses, but the Husky just takes him down.
The trouble is we like to take him to the park after work, it's dark by 7ish, so 6-7 is really the best time for us. Which is clearly the best time for the Husky owner as well. It will be easier come spring as we can go later with no issue. But for now it's our only option.

I should also mention that last night the husky actually picked up our dog by the throat and swung him a bit like a rag doll. He'd done this once before when our pup had a coat on. The husky grabbed the coat and shook him vigorously.
Our pup goes submissive right away when confronted by the Husky. But it will go on for 15-20 minutes before the Husky gets bored with him. Admittedly, one freed our pup will run after the Husky a few times before figuring out it is to no avail. Then her will try to avoid him. But if the Husky sees him playing with another dog he will run and take him down...again and again.
