We just got her a few days ago! “Moco Moco” means “fluffy” in Japanese – exactly what she is! So adorable and cute, my little beast. The potty training is still to be completed but she is getting better…. I mean she is still a baby! We just love her soooooooooooo much!

The little Pomeranian breed of dog is always fun to watch and play with at first but after a while their real personality shines through and that is when many owners experience Pomeranian problems. Before you bring one of the little toy breeds home you may want to discuss these Pomeranian problems with your breeder to make sure that a Pomeranian is the right dog for you. Not all dogs are good for all people so be sure you check out the Pomeranian before you bring it home.

If you have kids you may want to not consider a Pomeranian because a Pomeranian will not be able to tolerate kids at all. The constant movement will unnerve the little dog and the games kids like to play like pulling the dog’s hair will not stand at all with any Pomeranian. So if you have small children you may want to consider a different breed of dog.

Another common Pomeranian problem is that shrill little bark that they have and their love of using it constantly and for what seems like no reason at all. A Pomeranian is startled easily and they will bark at the slightest sense of movement from any direction. If you live in an apartment building, or your neighbors are very close to your home, you may not want to get a Pomeranian as they love to warn people of coming danger even when there is no danger coming.

Pomeranians are part of the toy breed and toy breeds, by their nature, are very fragile little animals. You need to always keep an eye out for them as they will curl up under blankets or pillows to sleep and you can kill your dog if you sit on it. Your dog could be in serious physical trouble by just leaping from your arms to the floor so always keep an eye on your Pomeranian to avoid harming them or to make sure that they do not harm themselves.

Your Pomeranian will more than likely take every chance it can get to test your patience. One of the big Pomeranian problems is that they are smart little dogs and they will always want to have things their way. You will find yourself repeating what you say constantly to your Pomeranian so be ready for a lot of patience and discipline. If this is not what you want out of your dog then you may want to consider a different breed.

You will find your Pomeranian testing your last nerve every chance it gets. You need patience to properly train a Pomeranian and you also need to remember that punishment does not work with a dog like this. So you need to repeat yourself a lot and stand firm on your commands so the dog knows that you mean it. Eventually it will sink in, but it can take a while so be ready.

Pomeranians are beautiful works of art, but are far more delicate than the average dog. Do not get a Pomeranian if you cannot take care of their coats every day. Pomeranian dogs are born entertainers and save their best for their people. Pomeranians can be just as trainable as other dogs, if you are patient and use positive reinforcement. Pomeranian dogs have some health problems, but they can be cured if caught early. Grooming their coats every day not only checks for health problems, but gives your Pomeranian needed attention.

Pomeranians do not look like real dogs – they look more like wind-up toys or a creature from Star Wars. They are smaller versions of the original Pomeranian sled dogs that lived hundreds of years ago in an area on the Baltic Sea called, not coincidently, Pomerania. It is thought they might have originally come from Lapland or Iceland, but nothing has been proven and besides the name Pomeranian has stuck.

Pomeranian dogs are more than cute faces. They are demanding in terms of attention and grooming, although undemanding in terms of feeding and exercise. Their tiny bodies sometimes mean a lot of difficulties in housebreaking, although some have been successfully trained to use a littler box like a cat or a rabbit. They are vocal, bold and will not suffer fools (or foolish little children) gladly. Despite their resilient and fearless nature, their bodies are actually quite fragile. They need to be treated with the same care and caution as you would a guinea pig or dwarf rabbit.

Pomeranian personalities can differ remarkably from Pomeranian to Pomeranian. Since there is such a demand for them over the past few decades, they have been breed more for quantity than quality. Sadly, this has lead to puppy farms supplying pet stores and Internet puppy sites with unhealthy, neurotic dogs. Never get a Pomeranian from a pet store or Internet site that sells puppies. Get one from a breeder or a Pomeranian rescue.

Pomeranians are standoffish around strangers and very protective of their people and homes. This has, on occasion, led to attacks. For example, this writer was walking her sixty-pound dog past a yard with a wooden fence. One of the boards suddenly banged dangerously, causing the both of us to jump. When I looked at our attacker, it was a smiling Pomeranian who looked very pleased with himself. They will bite when cornered by a person or another animal.

Pomeranians need regular check ups and vaccinations just like any other dogs. They need worming medication and rabies shots. Pomeranian dogs are also prone to some illnesses more than other breeds. These illnesses include eye infections, dislocated patella, skin problems, teeth problems and slipped stifle. Their skeletons are also more fragile than the average dog’s. A drop from your arms can fracture bones and do internal injuries. Daily grooming can help you not only untangle the coat, but spot potential problems before they become too serious.

Pomeranians can often grow bigger than their parents, but they can still be purebred Pomeranian dogs. Their ancestors were sled dogs of a Spitz-type that were about thirty pounds. Gradually, as the use of dog sleds dwindled, the Pomeranian became smaller for apartment dwelling. Now, they average about seven pounds. With regular care, attention and a sensible diet, they should live well into their teens and forever in your heart.

This is dog is occasionally referred to as the Miniature Spitz dog or European Spitz. In its native land of Germany it is the smallest member of the German Spitz group. The Pomeranian is also sometimes called the German Spitz in Germany.

In Germany the Pomeranian was bred to its present size in Pomeranian during the nineteenth century. Its ancestors were of the Spitz type and larger. Among the Pomeranian’s ancestors are the Samoyed, Norwegian Elkhound, Chow Chow and other northern European breeds. It is possible that the Pomeranian was reduced in size from the large white sled dog that originated in Iceland and Lapland. Exact time of origin is unknown. Queen Victoria of England took a great liking to the Pomeranian and helped to increase its popularity in her palace in 1888.

Other Spitz types were used as herding dogs and sled pullers. The Pomeranian, however, has always been a lapdog. It came to America in the late nineteenth century and was shown in the miscellaneous class in 1892 by the AKC. American Kennel Club recognized the Pomeranian officially in 1900. Since that time he has become quite popular as a pampered little pet.

Personality

The Pomeranian is sometimes a little too courageous for its own good. He serves well as an alarm dog, but its barking sometimes becomes a habit that needs to be discouraged. The Pomeranian has one primary purpose and that is to please its owners. It sometimes shies away from children that play too rough. The Pomeranian may not be a good choice for a household with children or as a child’s pet. They socialize easily with cats and other small family pets.

The Pomeranian is definitely one of those big dogs in a little package. They usually won’t back down from a much larger dog. This aggressiveness can be self-destructive as obviously a bigger dog could make mince meat of a tiny Pomeranian.

The Pomeranian is eager to learn and is devoted to its family. He is affectionate and has a very loving nature toward its own family. He is delightful and is always ready for a quick game with those he loves.

The Pomeranian responds to command if they are consistently given and he is rewarded with edible treats or kind words. The Pomeranian has a tendency to become somewhat of a “spoiled brat.” When his bad habits surface he may simply ignore commands to “act better.” He is rarely seen in agility trials; however, the Pomeranian does well in obedience trials.

Appearance

A Pomeranian stands about 7 to 8 inches tall and weighs from 3 to 7 pounds. The tiny Pomeranian has a short body, straight legs and well-balanced overall appearance. He has erect ears and a fox like expression that gives this little dog an alert expression. Pigmentation of the nose, lips and eyelids are always dark, usually black.

The Pomeranian’s coat is double and profuse. Acceptable colors are red, orange, cream and sable, black, brown and blue.

Grooming the Pomeranian

The coat of a Pomeranian is made up of an undercoat and an outer coat. The undercoat is soft and fluffy. The outer coat is fairly long, straight and harsh and covers the entire body.

There is an abundance of coat around the neck and the fore part of the shoulders and chest that forms a frill that extends over the shoulder. The forequarters are well feathered and the thighs and hind legs are well feathered to the hocks.

The Pomeranian requires regular attention to keep it clean and attractive. Thorough brushing once a week is required to keep the coat in good condition.

You will need a slicker/pin brush, medium-tooth metal comb, scissors and cotton buds.

Brush against the lie of the coat to give the Pomeranian its round pompom appearance. Brush first with the slicker/pin brush working from the top of the head, layering the hair as you go and be sure you reach the skin level. Then work through the coat with the comb to remove any tangles left behind from the brushing.

You might consider using a dry bath on your Pomeranian’s coat when in full coat. When the Pomeranian is in full coat, use a suitable pH-alkaline-balanced shampoo and rinse well.

My beautiful 9 week old Pomeranian is really loving it when she gets to play with our 3 Rats. Here’s a video of Miley (Pomeranian) playing with Violet (Rat) in our rat cage. Don’t worry, Miley does not harm the rats at all. They enjoy playing together!
