The American Kennel Club or AKC, has certain requirements for every breed of dog, which states what they have to look like and how they must perform in a show environment. A Schnauzer first became a recognized breed in the United States in 1924, and two years later was accepted as a registered breed by the AKC. The AKC put them into the same grouping as terriers because of their similarities to breeds of this family from Ireland and Britain.

A Miniature Schnauzer stands between 12-14 inches in length and an almost square build that should be in equal proportion between length and height. They do not resemble a toy breed in any way because they cannot be under 12 inches or over 14 inches in height.

The eyes of a Miniature Schnauzer should be oval shaped and deeply set in the head and dark brown in coloration. They may not be lighter in color or larger sized. The ears, if they are cropped need to be identical in length and shape, and they must have a pointed tip on each one. The ears also need to be set high up on the skull and perpendicular, if the ears uncropped they should be in a V-shape, small and close to the head, which is strong and rectangle shaped. From the ears to the eyes, the width should lessen and again from the eyes and back to the nose. The head may not be coarse, this may result in the Miniature Schnauzer being disqualified. The teeth must be in a perfect scissor bite and any type of under or overbite would also be grounds for disqualification.

The front legs of a Miniature Schnauzer must be straight and parrallel in appearance, no matter which angle they are viewed from. The legs should showcase excellent bone structure with the elbows being close to the body. The ribcage is spread in a way that lets the elbows continue moving close to the body. The shoulders should be muscular and slope downward, but be in vertical alignment with the elbows. The hindquarters of the dog must consist of strong, muscular thighs that angle so that the hocks are located behind the tail, which should be set high and always carried in an erect manner. The tail can be docked but should be visible over the back of the body. Sickle hocks, cow hocks or open hocks are also grounds for being disqualified from show events. The feet should be short and roundedf with sturdy black colored pads and have arched toes.

The coat color may only be in a solid black, black and silver or salt and pepper, consisting of a hard wiry over coat and a close undercoating. The body should be plucked over the head, neck, tail, ears, body and chest so that it is the proper length, and so the judges may see the texture. Texture of the coat is extremely important in the Miniature Schnauzer, the coat should not be too smooth or too soft. Black is the only solid coloring that is accepted by the American Kennel Club. Many breeders have tried to breed the Miniature Schnauzer with other breeds to get new coloring, but the resulting colors are not accepted or recognized by the AKC or other Schnauzer clubs.

The Miniature Schnauzer is a dog breed that uses trotting as their main gait and there is also a gait used at AKC judging events. The gait used for show purposes must be performed in a flawless manner.

Our precious miniature schnauzer brought so much love and joy to our family. We didn’t get near enough time with her – but we are so grateful for all the love and joy and healing she brought.

What is cuter than a Miniature Schnauzer? A Miniature Schnauzer in a hat or t-shirt, of course. What colors are most suitable for dog? If you are tired of hearing people say, “Isn’t he cute?” about your little girl, then consider a pretty, feminine pink. Pink bows are good for a girl, or a pink t-shirt with “princess” written on it will dispel all doubt. If you want people to know that your baby is a boy, then think of a blue outfit with matching blue leash. Blue is also a good color for white schnauzers. Think of crisp white clouds against a blue sky. For a bold, modern look, a black sweater is dramatic against your white Miniature Schnauzer’s fur. If your Miniature Schnauzer is brown, think of fall colors. Brown goes well with dark green, orange and gold. For a black Miniature Schnauzer, red can be dramatic. Like white miniature Schnauzers, gray Schnauzers do well in blue. If your Miniature Schnauzer is multi-colored, think of which colors will show most when he or she is wearing clothes. If the dog is wearing a turtleneck sweater, for instance, his or her head and legs will show, so work with the colors of the head and neck. For winter, a blue turtleneck sweater is cute on a white dog. A darker dog might wear red and green for Christmas. Try a red and green sweater with red or green matching booties and hat. Bows can be color coordinated with the fur on your dog’s head. If a sweater’s neckline comes up only to the neck, then find a color that goes well with the color of your dog’s neck. Some dog owners like to dress themselves and their dogs in matching outfits. This can be achieved simply or more elaborately. A simple way is to tie colored hair bows into your dog’s fur and wear a matching shirt or blouse. A white dog can wear black bows while his or her human wears black pants, a white top, and perhaps a black jacket. A more elaborate way might be to dress your brown Miniature Schnauzer in a green sweater with gold bows while you wear a brown, green and gold sweater. Even if your colors do not match, you won’t want them to clash, so don’t wear your purple outfit if your Miniature Schnauzer is wearing orange. For holidays you can coordinate your outfit with your dog’s with contrasting holiday colors. Dress your dog in yellow and yourself in lavender for Easter, or wear silver and dress your Miniature Schnauzer in blue for Hanukkah. School colors and team colors are also fun for dog’s clothes. Pet supply stores frequently sell t-shirts and sweaters in the local teams’ colors. If you live far from your old school or your old hometown, try the internet, or if you sew or knit, you can make something for your dog. Use the same cloth or yarn for your clothes and your dog’s, so you can be sure of an exact match. For a party, you can decorate in your favorite colors or colors coordinated with the theme of the party, and dress your dog in the same colors as the decorations for a cute look. Use your imagination and you can come up lots of fun, colorful outfits to suite your Miniature Schnauzer.

But it advisable to include healthcare in grooming as this will help to keep the coat of your pet healthy. The coat over the top is very coarse and hard whereas the undercoat is extremely soft. The wiry coat of Miniature Schnauzer is easy to take care of. It should be trimmed around the eyes and ears and the knots should be clipped if any.

The maximum weight gain is up to fifteen pounds and it can reach to the height of twelve inches. The life expectancy of this miniature breed is around fourteen years and the time spend with the Miniature Schnauzer will always be a quality time. These dogs are bold and courageous and were originally used for guarding small farms, herds and families. They were once used as rat hunter and their small body helped them to get into tight places. Their natural instinct as rat hunter makes this dog untrustworthy when kept around small pets. Any animal smaller to them can suffer the attack of Miniature Schnauzer.

They are very lively and energetic and demands the attention of the owner, if not played with them they invent their own games and derive fun. They are very sensitive and emotional and if ignored by the owner for a long period can lead to depression and further leading to mental and physical deterioration. Miniature Schnauzer enjoys the company of children and knows to be gentle with them; moreover he is a very good companion with larger pets.

They can be easily adjust into the family and can be loving and loyal provided that they get comfortable with the surroundings. They are the excellent watch dogs and barks on those who appear to be a threat for their family. They are very cautious regarding strangers and shall defend vocally and do not resort physically. This breed easily gains weight if fed with balanced diets and regular exercise. In travelling they can prove to be very good companions.

This breed is considered to be a healthy breed but still it can have some health problems like bladder stones, diabetes and pancreatitis. It should never be fed with chocolates as this can act as poison and can take the life of your dog.

The most common problem that a Miniature Schnauzer owner faces while playing with his dog is when the dog hurts himself in the face and even worse, in the eyes.

The dog should never be allowed to hang his head outside the window because flying debris and even insects can harm his vision.

If the dog gathers dirt in his eyes, a concoction of 2 cups of water and a teaspoon of salt should be the perfect solution. Without touching his eyes, a cotton swab should be dipped into the concoction and his eyes can be effectively cleaned with the same. Avoid eye drops unless prescribed by the vet.

Powders and soaps are to be completely avoided and trimming and clipping the hair around the eyes can go a long way in preventing irritation and eye infection.

Excess mucus or tearing, cataract and glaucoma are some of the eye ailments that are seen to affect a Miniature Schnauzer. But the most common among all ailments is the dry eye.

Just as it sounds like, the dry eye syndrome is when the dog’s eyes become dry and he suffers from irritation.

According to vets, the Miniature Schnauzer suffers from dry eyes because the dog’s immune system mistakes its tear glands for a foreign object that needs to be destroyed. When the tear glands are unable to produce adequate moisture to combat the immune system’s attack, the eyes become more and more dry.

Dry eye often leads to injured corneas, infections and even blindness. The most common symptoms are rubbing of eyes, reddened eyes, yellow discharge, and squinting and even cloudiness of vision.

This ailment is more rampant in middle-aged to senior dogs as compared to the younger ones.

When the first signs of dry eyes are noticed, one should immediately rush his Miniature Schnauzer to the veterinarian before conducting any kind of treatment of his own.

Personality

The miniature schnauzer is a fantastic companion and family pet. It is an affectionate dog who likes to be around people including kids. Origin and History
