The Airedale Terrier is a medium 45 to 65 pound dog that usually reaches between 22″ and 24″. Known as the King of the Terriers, they are largest of the Terrier breeds recognized by the AKC. It is a compact little powerhouse that is all terrier when it comes to chasing little animals or appeasing its curiosity.

Airedale Terriers are typically tan on the ears, head, chest, undersides, legs, and sometimes on the shoulders. They are black or grizzle on the sides and upper parts of the body. Sometimes they have a red mixture on the black or white markings on the chest. Certain strains of the breed also have a small white patch on the chest. Their wiry, dense outer coat requires regular grooming.

If you are looking for a dog with plenty of stamina and energy, look no further. The Airedale Terrier is full of energy and needs daily exercise and play. Generally speaking, they do best with older well behaved children and are not ideal for homes with smaller pets as terriers have the tendency to chase small animals and vermin. They can do well with other dogs, especially if they are socialized from puppyhood. They are loyal and protective if their family. They love to learn and can be trained easily provided training is fun and not monotonous.

The breed dates itself back to 18th century England. The breed is a cross between an Otterhound and a Waterside Terrier. They were bred for hunting small game and were later used in big game hunting, police work and as an army dog in WWII. The Airedale Terrier is now considered more of a family pet than working dog. However, they do love to work and have tasks to do and still make good hunting and tracking dogs

For a family that enjoys outdoors and exercise, the Airedale Terrier is an excellent choice. Although they can work with other pets and dogs, a one pet household seems more ideal for their needs unless they grow up with other family pets. The small and beautiful Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have long, softy, shiny coats if they are healthy and properly groomed. The coloring is typically black and tan or black and white with tan areas around the nose, above the eyes on the legs and feet. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel requires regular grooming attention or their coats will lose the attractive luster.

Weekly grooming is advised for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Chose a brush or comb that will not damage the coat or irritate the skin and make grooming a part of a regular routine from day one. Your Cavalier will truthfully benefit from brushing and combing more than once weekly if you can afford the time. The long hair of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel requires more grooming time than other breeds but it is worth the effort. If left undone for a long period of time, the dog’s coat may become dirty, tangled and dull. Upkeep is not merely for looks sake, but a messy knot of hair makes future grooming a real pain.

Overview

The first Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were originally recorded in paintings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries as small dogs that were regularly found in the houses of royalty and in court. The largest supporter of these dogs used to be King Charles II, and he was usually seen with several of these dogs. During that time these dogs were used to attract fleas, and were also used as a way to cure stress ailments.

Temperament

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have wonderful personalities, and is ideal dogs for families, couples and even single people. These dogs are inquisitive and playful by nature, but also like to just lie on their owner’s lap. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel likes to spend time with humans, and requires a lot of attention on a daily basis. These dogs does not like to be left alone for extended periods of time, and might become destructive or even nervous when this happens. Seeing that this is a dog that loves to chase, they may require proper socialisation to not chase other animals in the home. This is not an aggressive dog, and will get along well with other dogs. These dogs love to please their owners, and are very easy to train.

Care

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be brushed often with a firm hair brush. Bathing should only be done if it is deemed necessary. The feathered hair on the ears of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a tendency to tangle, and should by groomed often to prevent this from happening. It is also important to trim the hair between the pads on the feet of these dogs, and check their ears for obstructions. It is important that these dogs are warm and dried properly after bath. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an average shedding dog.

Training

This is an extremely intelligent dog, and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is very eager to learn. These dogs will do very well in hunting and agility if they receive the correct training. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel does well in competitive obedience training, and they also make wonderful therapy dogs. These dogs will respond positively to training that involves praise and fair training methods.

Health problems

Although the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed, they are amazingly healthy. But there are some serious health problems that these dogs struggle with at times. Many of these can be eliminated if these dogs are bought from a trustworthy breeder. Some of the health conditions these dogs struggle with include syringomyelia , mitral valve heart disease, patellar luxation, Cataracts, otitis externa and an early commencement of hearing loss.

With the many dog breeds you have to choose from it can be hard to decide who to bring into your family. There are things you should analyze when choosing your dog for a pet.

You should look at the care, training, and character of the dog breed before making your decision. You may also want to speak with a dog breeder about all aspects of the dog and what to expect. They can help you in determining the right choice and find the right dog for you. One of the many dog breeds available is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This dog is considered a toy as they love to play, but don’t really have the body type for other activities.

This is a small dog only weighing ten to eighteen pounds with a height of eleven to thirteen inches. You will notice most of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeds are black and tan or white, black and red, or just red. They have a medium length hair that is straight rather than curled, except on the ears where it is a bit wavy. You will also find it is a silky coat rather than coarse or completely soft. They tend to shed lightly, but should be brushed often.

As the name suggests they are of the spaniel breed with an elegance to their demeanor. They are one of the most common lap dogs you will find. They also tend to be loyal, gentle, and great for playing catch and retrieve with. If there is water around you may find they are taking a dip, just to have a little more fun in the day. You will also find they make good hunting dogs if you train them from puppies.

However the most important character trait is the family orientation of the dog. They love to be pampered and live indoors despite the burst of energy. They make great pets for households with other dogs, but sometimes little children are not a favorite. They prefer the pampering rather than being tugged on.

For training you will find the dog is obedient and happy to learn new things. They don’t like to be ignored so allowing plenty of time for attention and activities is the best you can do for them toward happiness. During training you will want to have a gentle nature and plenty of positive reinforcement.

Care for this type of dog will include having at least a small home like an apartment or condo. They don’t need a lot of space, but you will need to have a fenced in yard where they can run when you don’t have the time for exercise. You will also find the medium hair tangles quite often so brushing once a day or weekly will help you keep them groomed and looking stately. As with some breeds the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is prone to certain health issues.

They can have diabetes, cataracts, deafness, allergies, and heart abnormalities. To prevent disease with your dog you will want to have yearly visits with the vet as well as understand the proper nutrition they require. You will also want to keep checking behind the ears for problems or insects. This is a prime spot for trouble.

This is one of the gentlest dogs you will find. You will enjoy adding them to your family and know that they don’t take up as much room as some of the larger breeds.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is usually a pampered house dog that requires frequent and careful combing and brushing to prevent matting. It is an ideal house pet and family companion that socializes well with other family pets. The Cavalier King Charles is noted to be particularly good with children. He has very few quirks in his personality and not many hang-ups either, which helps to make him a good companion for children.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is active and high-spirited. He enjoys pleasing his family in every way possible. The Cavalier King Charles is loving and loveable. Among his assets are intelligence and obedience. He is usually ready for walks or play time but will be just as content by himself dozing near his family when asked. This dog is charming and usually undemanding. The Cavalier King Charles also makes a good companion to senior citizens, young families and singles as well.

His exercise requirements are easily accomplished in daily household activities. His need for exercise is not great, although as mentioned above, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel does enjoy walks with his loved ones. If walking with his loved ones is not available he is just as content romping around in the backyard.

The roots of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as with all true Spaniels are probably found in Spain, although the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel claims origin in seventeenth-century England. It is felt by some historians that the breed probably has some of the ancient Oriental toy breeds among its ancestors as well. King Charles II favored a Cavalier type that evolved into a dog with a shorter muzzle and lighter body. In the early 1900s selective breeding created a swing back to the original head and body type.

Originally, Spaniels were sporting dogs used mostly to flush and retrieve game birds. In the 1600s the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel served a similar function, but the principal purpose at this time was to provide pleasure for its English royalty owners. They would lie at the feet in the beds of Kings and provide warmth to the master’s feet. They provided companionship for dukes and earls.

The English Kennel Club distinguished them from the King Charles spaniel in 1945 as a separate breed by the addition of the Cavalier to its name. There was a long period of discord among American Cavalier fanciers. However, the breed was recognized by AKC in 1996.

The Cavalier King Charles stands 12 to 13 inches tall and weighs 10 to 18 pounds. He resembles a miniature hunting spaniel with a moderately long, full muzzle, long, high-set ears and a long or docked tail.

The coat of a Cavalier King Charles is soft, gently-waving and longish hair that is almost like silk. The red and white color type is called Blenheim after the Duke of Marlborough’s estate. Other acceptable colors of the Cavalier King Charles are solid red, black and white and tricolor. The tricolor is a combination of black and white with russet brown accents.

How do you even begin to choose a food for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? There are so many brands of food, textures, and flavors. Cavalier’s food affects his coat, health, and temperament. So how do you choose? You should feed your puppy enough of the proper food to meet his energy requirements. Amounts may vary depending on age, size, activity level, and health. I would recommend checking with your veterinarian to make sure the Cavalier is healthy. Some Cavaliers may have special dietary needs for specific problems. This information pertains to a healthy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Types of Dog Food:

” Dry: usually less expensive, contain the least amount of fat, but the most preservatives.

” Canned: made up of 60-70% water.

” Simi-moist: contain a great deal of sugar.

” Home made: use a balanced amount of meat and grain with a smaller amount of vegetables.

Stages of Development:

1. Puppy: at 6 weeks of age introduce solid foods, by 8 weeks – fully weaned onto solid puppy food.

2. Adult: at 10-12 months, when the dog has stopped growing – can give adult dog food.

3. Senior: a change in lifestyle will occur in the dog such as exercising less, moves more slowly, and sleeps more, and starts to put on weight. This is a good time to change to senior dog food.

Choosing a Dog Food:

” Always check with your veterinarian before choosing a food. My veterinarian prefers dry food over semi-moist and canned because it is better for the Cavalier’s teeth. For puppies, the dry food can be moistened with water.

” Pay attention to the ingredients listed on dog food.

” The higher the ingredient the more of that ingredient there is in the food.

” Meat proteins such as chicken, lamb, or beef should appear at the top of the list.

” Grains should be next on the list and vegetables last.

” Beware of labels that list corn at one of the top ingredients. Dogs do not digest it easily.

Treats:

” Treats are a great way to reward you puppy and dog for good behavior.

” Treats are generally not as nutritious as regular food, so don’t use too many.

” If you find yourself using a great deal of treats, try using the regular food as a treat.

” Treats should be soft in texture.

” Treats should be about the size of a large pea.

Water:

” All dogs require a great deal of water.

” You may want to limit the water for a puppy to specific times, such as once an hour on the hour, to help with potty training. Take the puppy to his potty place about 10 minutes after he drinks.

” Once the puppy is potty trained, fresh water should be left out for him at all times.

” Wash the bowel and give fresh water during the day.

Feeding Schedule:

” Puppies: Start with 3 feedings per day. As the puppy grows to be about 5-6 months old, you can gradually back the feeding down to 2 feedings per day.
