I want my beagle to be breed for hunting rabbits. I may even enter my beagle in a few field trial competitions when its ready. Well anyway, I live in Charles Town, West Virginia, it is in the eastern panhandle. Does anyone know of any beagle breeders that would fulfill my needs in my area?

Royal Canin Delivers Fifteen Tons of Free Cat Food to Area Animal Shelters

Royal Canin, a pet food company with its U.S. headquarters in St. Charles, Mo., recently donated 15 tons of cat food to six St. Louis-area animal shelters and rescue groups. The food will be used by those shelters to offer a year's worth of free food with any cat adoption on Saturday.

Royal Canin (http://www.royalcanin.us), a pet food company with its U.S. headquarters in St. Charles Mo., today completed delivery of more than 15 tons of free cat food to six St. Louis-area animal shelters and rescue groups. This Saturday, the shelters will use the food as the main incentive of a regional adoption drive. Each shelter will offer a year's worth of free Royal Canin food with every adoption.

The free food is part of a 60-ton surplus Royal Canin plans to donate throughout the Midwest. The donation and adoption event idea arose after Royal Canin recently changed the packaging for its entire cat food line.

“All the food is new; it's just in the outdated packaging,” explains Ann Hudson, director of marketing for Royal Canin. “Still, it turned out to be a good problem to have. It gave us a reason to donate a significant amount of food and to provide shelters and rescue groups with a great incentive to encourage adoptions.”

Six shelters, including St. Louis City's Animal Center, the Granite City Animal Protection Association (APA), the Franklin County Humane Society, the St. Charles Humane Society, the Open Door Animal Sanctuary and the Cat Network are all hoping the year's worth of food will lead to a wave of adoptions on Saturday.

“We think it's a great offer and may be enough to entice some people who have wanted to adopt a cat, but just haven't taken that step,” says Jill Allen, shelter manager for the St. Charles Humane Society. “We're especially hopeful that this will encourage people to adopt some of the adults we have in our care, so many of which would make great pets and deserve good homes. By offering a year's worth of food, we're trying to make adoping a cat of any age as easy and rewarding as possible.”

Allen is also excited about the other part of Royal Canin's donation. In addition to providing food to be sent home with each adoption, the company donated enough food to feed all the cats within the shelter's care for approximately one year. The St. Charles Humane Society is home to approximately 41 adult cats and 28 kittens.

“We wanted to make sure that each shelter had enough cat food, regardless of how many cats or kittens it adopted out on Saturday, to meet its needs for about one year,” says Hudson. “In some cases, some shelters had to scale back based on their ability to store the food, but all of them should have enough food to last quite a while.”

Storage wasn't a big issue for Allen, which requested 4,000 pounds of food. “We cleared out space within our basement so that we could take enough food to last throughout the year.”

To qualify for a year's worth of food, individuals simply need to adopt a cat or kitten, following the normal adoption guidelines and processes of each shelter. The shelters will then give each new adoptee approximately 42 pounds of the right formula for their new pet. Each shelter has adequate supplies of kitten, adult, mature and light food to provide new cat owners, as well as some specialty formulas, such as sensitive stomach. Royal Canin used industry guidelines to estimate a year's worth of food. Those guidelines indicate that an average cat will eat approximately three and one half pounds of food per month, or 42 pounds per year.

“Based on those guidelines, our donation should feed approximately 700 St. Louis-area cats for one year, not to mention help their owners save some money on cat food,” adds Hudson.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

As you can probably tell by its name, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have Spanish roots. These dogs are also said to be the reason why European Toy dogs existed in the first place.

People bred small spaniels with various Oriental Toy breeds and the results were small Tudor lapdogs, otherwise reffered to as “comfort” spaniels. The wealthy actually use them as foot warmers and to attract fleas that were otherwise bothering the owner.

Toy Spaniels eventually became popular because it appealed to people of all ages. Sometime during the 1700s it is said that King Charles II was so taken by his Toy Spaniels that he was actually accused of ignoring important state affairs in order to spend time with his dogs.

These stories about the king and his dogs travelled so fast throughout town and other parts of the country that eventually everyone associated the Toy Spaniel with King Charles himself, thus causing the dog to become officially known as “Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dogs”.

Soon after King Charles II passed away, the Duke of Marlborough was just as enthusiastic about this dog breed as King Charles II was. The Duke's favorite was the red and white Toy Spaniel which was named after his estate. For generations to come, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs graced the families of the wealthy.

In time the look of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel started to change. Eventually, more people started to prefer the look of the shorter-nosed Toy Spaniel. However, when a rich American named Roswell Elridge traveled to England and offered an enormous money prize for the best “pointed nosed” Spaniels, it sparked a huge interest back to the original look of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They eventually became the most popular dog in England and was recognized by the AKC in 1996.

Personality

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is opinioned to be the all-around best house pet that a family could own. This dog is playful, sweet, quiet, and overly affectionate. It is an absolute joy to have around and is amiable towards other pets, dogs, and strangers. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels love to explore the outside and is very adaptable when being trained.

Taking Care Of Your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs need a moderate amount of exercise on a daily basis. This can be accomplished with a few short walks or a romp through the yard. This is one breed that is not meant to live outside. As far as grooming is concerned, its long coat will need a thorough brushing at least every other day.

Health Information

The lifespan of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can vary from 8 years on up to 15 years. Major health concerns that spring up are CHD, mitral valve insufficiency, and syringomelia. Minor healh issues include entropion and patellar luxation.

History

In the 16th century, the English royalty favored a diminutive form of the spaniel One name for them was the Spaniel Gentle. During cold weather Gentlewomen took these lapdogs with them for warmth during carriage rides. Charles II had several of these dogs.

While King William the third and Mary the second ruled, the spaniel with a long nose lost popularity. The Pug was popular in the Netherlands and it is surmised that spaniels were bred with pugs. William had Dutch ancestry. The spaniel acquired some Pug features. In the middle of the 19th century breeding and showing dogs grew in popularity and the looks of the King Charles Spaniel changed a good bit; his size decreased, his head assumed a dome's shape, the muzzle shortened, and the nose became pushed up.

General Looks

He has big hanging ears, big eyes, and is of a robust build.

Is This Your Breed?

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is companionable and likes children. He trains well. His coat needs to be brushed every week. It doesn't require extensive trimming, though trimming the fur on his rump to be hygienic is recommended. He likes exercise, but enjoys a nap too.

Coat

The coat is silk-like, moderately long, and straight.

Color

The colors are blenheim, tricolor, ruby, and black and tan .

Locomotion

The hind legs propel his movement, which is graceful. Looking at him at his side view the lengthy stride is noticed.

Personality

He is affectionate and a good friend. He is a social dog and friendly. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is playful and gentle. He does well with other pets, but might chase birds.

This breed was named for the Cavalier King, who ruled Great Britain in the 1700s.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is usually a pampered house dog that requires frequent and careful combing and brushing to prevent matting. It is an ideal house pet and family companion that socializes well with other family pets. The Cavalier King Charles is noted to be particularly good with children. He has very few quirks in his personality and not many hang-ups either, which helps to make him a good companion for children.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is active and high-spirited. He enjoys pleasing his family in every way possible. The Cavalier King Charles is loving and loveable. Among his assets are intelligence and obedience. He is usually ready for walks or play time but will be just as content by himself dozing near his family when asked. This dog is charming and usually undemanding. The Cavalier King Charles also makes a good companion to senior citizens, young families and singles as well.

His exercise requirements are easily accomplished in daily household activities. His need for exercise is not great, although as mentioned above, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel does enjoy walks with his loved ones. If walking with his loved ones is not available he is just as content romping around in the backyard.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel enjoys consistent training. He will bond well with the entire family. He is blessed with an even and fairly predictable temperament. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel adjust well to most situations. They are especially good for agility and obedience training. They are fine athletes.

The roots of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as with all true Spaniels are probably found in Spain, although the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel claims origin in seventeenth-century England. It is felt by some historians that the breed probably has some of the ancient Oriental toy breeds among its ancestors as well. King Charles II favored a Cavalier type that evolved into a dog with a shorter muzzle and lighter body. In the early 1900s selective breeding created a swing back to the original head and body type.

Originally, Spaniels were sporting dogs used mostly to flush and retrieve game birds. In the 1600s the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel served a similar function, but the principal purpose at this time was to provide pleasure for its English royalty owners. They would lie at the feet in the beds of Kings and provide warmth to the master's feet. They provided companionship for dukes and earls.

The English Kennel Club distinguished them from the King Charles spaniel in 1945 as a separate breed by the addition of the Cavalier to its name. There was a long period of discord among American Cavalier fanciers. However, the breed was recognized by AKC in 1996.

The Cavalier King Charles stands 12 to 13 inches tall and weighs 10 to 18 pounds. He resembles a miniature hunting spaniel with a moderately long, full muzzle, long, high-set ears and a long or docked tail.

The coat of a Cavalier King Charles is soft, gently-waving and longish hair that is almost like silk. The red and white color type is called Blenheim after the Duke of Marlborough's estate. Other acceptable colors of the Cavalier King Charles are solid red, black and white and tricolor. The tricolor is a combination of black and white with russet brown accents.

How do you even begin to choose a food for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? There are so many brands of food, textures, and flavors. Cavalier's food affects his coat, health, and temperament. So how do you choose? You should feed your puppy enough of the proper food to meet his energy requirements. Amounts may vary depending on age, size, activity level, and health. I would recommend checking with your veterinarian to make sure the Cavalier is healthy. Some Cavaliers may have special dietary needs for specific problems. This information pertains to a healthy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Types of Dog Food:

" Dry: usually less expensive, contain the least amount of fat, but the most preservatives.

" Canned: made up of 60-70% water.

" Simi-moist: contain a great deal of sugar.

" Home made: use a balanced amount of meat and grain with a smaller amount of vegetables.

Stages of Development:

1. Puppy: at 6 weeks of age introduce solid foods, by 8 weeks - fully weaned onto solid puppy food.

2. Adult: at 10-12 months, when the dog has stopped growing - can give adult dog food.

3. Senior: a change in lifestyle will occur in the dog such as exercising less, moves more slowly, and sleeps more, and starts to put on weight. This is a good time to change to senior dog food.

Choosing a Dog Food:

" Always check with your veterinarian before choosing a food. My veterinarian prefers dry food over semi-moist and canned because it is better for the Cavalier's teeth. For puppies, the dry food can be moistened with water.

" Pay attention to the ingredients listed on dog food.

" The higher the ingredient the more of that ingredient there is in the food.

" Meat proteins such as chicken, lamb, or beef should appear at the top of the list.

" Grains should be next on the list and vegetables last.

" Beware of labels that list corn at one of the top ingredients. Dogs do not digest it easily.

Treats:

" Treats are a great way to reward you puppy and dog for good behavior.

" Treats are generally not as nutritious as regular food, so don't use too many.

" If you find yourself using a great deal of treats, try using the regular food as a treat.

" Treats should be soft in texture.

" Treats should be about the size of a large pea.

Water:

" All dogs require a great deal of water.

" You may want to limit the water for a puppy to specific times, such as once an hour on the hour, to help with potty training. Take the puppy to his potty place about 10 minutes after he drinks.

" Once the puppy is potty trained, fresh water should be left out for him at all times.

" Wash the bowel and give fresh water during the day.

Feeding Schedule:

" Puppies: Start with 3 feedings per day. As the puppy grows to be about 5-6 months old, you can gradually back the feeding down to 2 feedings per day.

" Take the puppy to his potty spot 10 minutes after he finishes eating.

" The amount of food you should feed at one time varies with the breed, age, and energy level of the dog. The label on the food bag or your veterinarian can give you an idea of the amount to feed per feeding.

Foods to Avoid:

" Chocolate

" Onions

" Dairy Products

" Bones from poultry and fish - tend to splinter, stick into their throat, or cut into their intestines.

" Grapes and raisons - have been linked to renal failure

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel makes a good family pet. She likes to live indoors and will do well with frequent walks or a properly fenced in exercise area. Please keep in mind that she will suffer in extreme heat. She is highly intelligent and generally good with children and other pets.

Good With Children?

Very good with older children. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a dog or puppy.

Good With Other Pets?

Yes, very good with other pets, especially if socialized early.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is 12 to 13 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 10 to 18 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is no exception. Be on the look out for syringomyelia (fluid filled cavities develop within spinal cord, also called neck scratchers disease, dog scratches in the air near the neck, can progress and can be painfull), canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), ear infections, back problems, heart murmers and dislocating kneecaps. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a moderate length, curl free, silky coat which sheds. She should be brushed regularly, paying particular attention to her feathery ears. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her. Her fur may need to be trimmed between the pads of her feet, her eyes checked and ears cleaned.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

Life Span

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can live between 9 and 14 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel History

She is believed to have originated in England. She was first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1996.

Whereas many dog breeds have origins that are cloaked in controversy, those of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are cloaked in confusion. So let's clear it up for you:

For starters, you must realize that there indeed does exist a breed known as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. There also exists a breed known as King Charles Spaniels. To further confuse the issue, both breeds are strikingly similar in appearance. So similar in fact, that some countries lump the two together under the common name of English Toy Spaniels.

And as if that weren't enough, we must also add that even though considered spaniels, they are not gun dogs; neither are they classed in the sporting group.

To begin digging our way out of this confusion we must start by accepting the fact that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the King Charles Spaniel were originally one and the same. Spaniels have always been a favorite of aristocratic families of Europe.

King Charles II was one who was so enamored by the little spaniels that the court's diary keeper noted: “They had access to all parts of Whitehall, even on state occasions.”

The diarist goes on to write:

“All I observed there was the stillness of the king playing with his dogs all the while and not minding to his business.”

Mary, Queen of Scots had an entire pack of small spaniels. Just before she was executed, one of the spaniels crept under her clothing, hung on tight and had to be removed by force. Toy spaniels appear in paintings by Gainsborough, Rubens, and even Rembrandt.

The little spaniels became so popular that over the years their pattern and characteristics changed. They developed diminutive characters, more similar to the Pekingese than to the miniature Springer Spaniel types. They eventually evolved as the spaniels King Charles love so much.

In 1920, an American living on Long Island in New York was reported to have put up some pretty interesting prize money at the famous Crufts Dog Show in England, for any breeder who could come up with a revival of the old type spaniel of the king's era. The British breeders accepted the challenge and started from the bottom.

They reconstructed the spaniel over the period of just a few generations, and finally produced the original-looking King Charles Spaniel. But herein lies the problem - instead of getting to wear the original title (which they really deserved since they were replicas of the originals), they were called Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. The addition of the name “Cavalier” would therefore distinguish them from what had evolved into the King Charles Spaniel of our present era.

From about the year 1926 until the present day, there are two separate breeds. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (most likely akin to the original King Charles Spaniel) and the King Charles Spaniel (far removed from what he was originally).
