Calling them “man’s best friend” may be a cliché, but no description is more apt to describe the relationship of humans with these fascinating creatures. Loyal, smart, protective, fun and playful, dogs have served as man’s ultimate companion since time immemorial.

But did you know that a dog’s loyalty to his master can reach enormous, fascinating levels? Yes, there are dog breeds which are amazingly loyal to their owners.

What other “mosts” are there when it comes to these canines which man has considered to be his best friend since time immemorial? How about the world’s most expensive dog breed? Or the most dangerous? Or you probably are hoping to own a canine breed which is considered to be one of the most fascinating.

Here, we will take a look at the world’s most amazing dog breeds – and describe what is it exactly that makes them so outstanding.

Counting Down the Top 10 Most Amazing Dog Breeds

If you’re thinking of a breed of dog to take care of, it is good to have an idea about what its temperament is, its characteristic and what makes it unique. [Owning a Dog]

To help you out, we will have a countdown of the top 10 most amazing dog breeds – ranging from the most dangerous, loyal, fascinating, popular and expensive breeds that you can buy.

1. Dog Breed: Doberman pinscher

Distinction: One of the most dangerous dog breeds in the world.

With their tall and compact bodies, dark color and alert ears, it is easy to see why the Doberman Pinscher as a dog breed is considered to be one of the most dangerous dog breeds in the world. Simply referred to as Doberman, this canine breed originated from Germany.

Generally, a domesticated Doberman is loyal, intelligent and alert. If you own this dog breed, they will be particularly loyal to you and aggressive towards strangers. They also do not like rivalry with other dogs.

What makes caring for a Doberman pinscher particularly dangerous is when the owners lack guidance, subject them to abuse or if not enough attention is given to them – upon which they can become destructive, dominant and extremely aggressive. [Dog Behavior]

2. Dog Breed: German Shepherd

Distinction: One of the most dangerous dog breeds in the world.

Another German breed of dog which is considered to be one of the most dangerous in the world is the German Shepherd. Unlike the Dobermans, this breed of canine does not have a particularly menacing look because they have a long coat and a generally mild-looking face.

However, they are extremely intelligent, strong and obedient, which is probably the reason why most police and military establishments employ them as guard dogs. Another characteristic of the German Shepherds which makes them particularly dangerous is their aggression towards smaller dog breeds.

3. Dog Breed: Rottweiler

Distinction: One of the most dangerous dog breeds in the world.

Did you know that Rottweiler is also known as Butcher dog? This canine breed ranks third in our list of the most dangerous dog breeds in the world. They are energetic, intelligent and hardy animals.

The thing which makes Rottweiler – and any dog breed for that matter – become dangerous is when they are subject to abuse and neglect. They also become a hazard to the community if they do not have sufficient training when it comes to mingling with humans or other animals.

In addition, Rottweilers are aggressive towards other dogs of the same sex. If you have cats and birds in the house, they might also exhibit aggressive behavior towards them.

4. Dog Breed: Samoyed

Distinction: One of the most expensive dog breeds in the world.

Next, we will take a look at a few of the most expensive dog breeds in the world. This ‘luxury’ dog breed has a price ranging from around ,000 to ,000.

What makes the Samoyed breed particularly expensive is the fact that they are among the ancient dog breeds that have been around for the last three centuries.

There are also a dwindling number of Samoyed dog breeders which is another reason why an owner needs to pay an arm and a leg to call this canine breed his or her best friend.

5. Dog Breed: English Bulldog or British Bulldog

Distinction: One of the most expensive dog breeds in the world.

How would you feel about owning a dog breed which is also owned by the British royals? In the United States in particular, English or British bulldogs are both expensive and popular. This breed of dog is also favored by a lot of men who see the breed as being a symbol of masculinity and tenacity.

If you’re thinking about a breed of dog to buy and you are willing to shell out the money for it, then you might as well go with one of the most popular and expensive dog breeds in the world – the British or English bulldog. A typical English bulldog puppy can cost you anywhere from ,000 to ,000.

6. Dog Breed: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Distinction: One of the most expensive dog breeds in the world.

To cap off our list of the most expensive dog breeds, there is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel which can cost anywhere from 0 to about ,500 for a puppy. What makes the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel expensive and special is that they are the ultimate definition of a man’s best friend.

When you look at their puppy-dog eyes, their rich coats and their small, compact bodies, it is easy to see why anybody would want to spend a significant amount of money just to be able to own a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. [Adorable Dog Breeds]

7. Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever

Distinction: One of the most popular dog breeds in the world.

Finally, we’ll move on to some of the most popular dog breeds in the world. First, there’s the Labrador Retriever. They are among the world’s most popular dog breeds according to the American Kennel Club because of their friendly demeanor.

If you would like to purchase a dog breed which is great with kids and works as a great solo companion as well, then you can never go wrong by choosing to care for a Labrador Retriever.

8. Dog Breed: Golden Retriever

Distinction: One of the most popular dog breeds in the worlds.

Golden Retrievers rank next to the Labrador Retriever as the most popular dog breeds in the world. This cousin breed is almost synonymous with the dog that almost every average American family has.

What’s so good about this breed of canine is that they are gentle by nature and their temperament is suitable for kids and all members of the family to play with.

Despite their large size, they do have a way with kids which make for the perfect canine friend. Just make sure that you have enough room for them to grow, because they can weigh as much as 90 pounds.

9. Dog Breed: Yorkshire Terrier

Distinction: One of the most popular dog breeds in the world.

Yorkshire Terrier dogs are small pooches which are also an ideal family dog. Let’s say that you live in an apartment which allows pets – but there isn’t much room for the dogs to move around. Naturally, you would be selecting a breed which is small in nature – and the Yorkshire Terrier is perfect for such a setup.

10. Dog Breed: Dachshunds

Distinction: One of the most popular dog breeds in the world.

This dog breed with a unique name, Dachshund, is also known as wiener dogs. They do have a unique body shape and they are known for their playful and sometimes ferocious nature.

There are different kinds of Dachshunds that you can own – including the long-haired, standard Dachshunds which has a calm demeanor, or the wire-haired Dachshund which has a personality more like the terrier’s.

Now that you already have an idea about the world’s most expensive, dangerous and popular dog breeds, which one are you planning to own?

The 'No's' have it I'm afraid. Am looking into getting a King Charles Spaniel now. Thanks everyone.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

As you can probably tell by its name, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have Spanish roots. These dogs are also said to be the reason why European Toy dogs existed in the first place.

People bred small spaniels with various Oriental Toy breeds and the results were small Tudor lapdogs, otherwise reffered to as “comfort” spaniels. The wealthy actually use them as foot warmers and to attract fleas that were otherwise bothering the owner.

Toy Spaniels eventually became popular because it appealed to people of all ages. Sometime during the 1700s it is said that King Charles II was so taken by his Toy Spaniels that he was actually accused of ignoring important state affairs in order to spend time with his dogs.

These stories about the king and his dogs travelled so fast throughout town and other parts of the country that eventually everyone associated the Toy Spaniel with King Charles himself, thus causing the dog to become officially known as “Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dogs”.

Soon after King Charles II passed away, the Duke of Marlborough was just as enthusiastic about this dog breed as King Charles II was. The Duke's favorite was the red and white Toy Spaniel which was named after his estate. For generations to come, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs graced the families of the wealthy.

In time the look of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel started to change. Eventually, more people started to prefer the look of the shorter-nosed Toy Spaniel. However, when a rich American named Roswell Elridge traveled to England and offered an enormous money prize for the best “pointed nosed” Spaniels, it sparked a huge interest back to the original look of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They eventually became the most popular dog in England and was recognized by the AKC in 1996.

Personality

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is opinioned to be the all-around best house pet that a family could own. This dog is playful, sweet, quiet, and overly affectionate. It is an absolute joy to have around and is amiable towards other pets, dogs, and strangers. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels love to explore the outside and is very adaptable when being trained.

Taking Care Of Your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs need a moderate amount of exercise on a daily basis. This can be accomplished with a few short walks or a romp through the yard. This is one breed that is not meant to live outside. As far as grooming is concerned, its long coat will need a thorough brushing at least every other day.

Health Information

The lifespan of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can vary from 8 years on up to 15 years. Major health concerns that spring up are CHD, mitral valve insufficiency, and syringomelia. Minor healh issues include entropion and patellar luxation.

History

In the 16th century, the English royalty favored a diminutive form of the spaniel One name for them was the Spaniel Gentle. During cold weather Gentlewomen took these lapdogs with them for warmth during carriage rides. Charles II had several of these dogs.

While King William the third and Mary the second ruled, the spaniel with a long nose lost popularity. The Pug was popular in the Netherlands and it is surmised that spaniels were bred with pugs. William had Dutch ancestry. The spaniel acquired some Pug features. In the middle of the 19th century breeding and showing dogs grew in popularity and the looks of the King Charles Spaniel changed a good bit; his size decreased, his head assumed a dome's shape, the muzzle shortened, and the nose became pushed up.

General Looks

He has big hanging ears, big eyes, and is of a robust build.

Is This Your Breed?

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is companionable and likes children. He trains well. His coat needs to be brushed every week. It doesn't require extensive trimming, though trimming the fur on his rump to be hygienic is recommended. He likes exercise, but enjoys a nap too.

Coat

The coat is silk-like, moderately long, and straight.

Color

The colors are blenheim, tricolor, ruby, and black and tan .

Locomotion

The hind legs propel his movement, which is graceful. Looking at him at his side view the lengthy stride is noticed.

Personality

He is affectionate and a good friend. He is a social dog and friendly. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is playful and gentle. He does well with other pets, but might chase birds.

This breed was named for the Cavalier King, who ruled Great Britain in the 1700s.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is usually a pampered house dog that requires frequent and careful combing and brushing to prevent matting. It is an ideal house pet and family companion that socializes well with other family pets. The Cavalier King Charles is noted to be particularly good with children. He has very few quirks in his personality and not many hang-ups either, which helps to make him a good companion for children.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is active and high-spirited. He enjoys pleasing his family in every way possible. The Cavalier King Charles is loving and loveable. Among his assets are intelligence and obedience. He is usually ready for walks or play time but will be just as content by himself dozing near his family when asked. This dog is charming and usually undemanding. The Cavalier King Charles also makes a good companion to senior citizens, young families and singles as well.

His exercise requirements are easily accomplished in daily household activities. His need for exercise is not great, although as mentioned above, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel does enjoy walks with his loved ones. If walking with his loved ones is not available he is just as content romping around in the backyard.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel enjoys consistent training. He will bond well with the entire family. He is blessed with an even and fairly predictable temperament. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel adjust well to most situations. They are especially good for agility and obedience training. They are fine athletes.

The roots of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as with all true Spaniels are probably found in Spain, although the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel claims origin in seventeenth-century England. It is felt by some historians that the breed probably has some of the ancient Oriental toy breeds among its ancestors as well. King Charles II favored a Cavalier type that evolved into a dog with a shorter muzzle and lighter body. In the early 1900s selective breeding created a swing back to the original head and body type.

Originally, Spaniels were sporting dogs used mostly to flush and retrieve game birds. In the 1600s the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel served a similar function, but the principal purpose at this time was to provide pleasure for its English royalty owners. They would lie at the feet in the beds of Kings and provide warmth to the master's feet. They provided companionship for dukes and earls.

The English Kennel Club distinguished them from the King Charles spaniel in 1945 as a separate breed by the addition of the Cavalier to its name. There was a long period of discord among American Cavalier fanciers. However, the breed was recognized by AKC in 1996.

The Cavalier King Charles stands 12 to 13 inches tall and weighs 10 to 18 pounds. He resembles a miniature hunting spaniel with a moderately long, full muzzle, long, high-set ears and a long or docked tail.

The coat of a Cavalier King Charles is soft, gently-waving and longish hair that is almost like silk. The red and white color type is called Blenheim after the Duke of Marlborough's estate. Other acceptable colors of the Cavalier King Charles are solid red, black and white and tricolor. The tricolor is a combination of black and white with russet brown accents.

How do you even begin to choose a food for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? There are so many brands of food, textures, and flavors. Cavalier's food affects his coat, health, and temperament. So how do you choose? You should feed your puppy enough of the proper food to meet his energy requirements. Amounts may vary depending on age, size, activity level, and health. I would recommend checking with your veterinarian to make sure the Cavalier is healthy. Some Cavaliers may have special dietary needs for specific problems. This information pertains to a healthy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Types of Dog Food:

" Dry: usually less expensive, contain the least amount of fat, but the most preservatives.

" Canned: made up of 60-70% water.

" Simi-moist: contain a great deal of sugar.

" Home made: use a balanced amount of meat and grain with a smaller amount of vegetables.

Stages of Development:

1. Puppy: at 6 weeks of age introduce solid foods, by 8 weeks - fully weaned onto solid puppy food.

2. Adult: at 10-12 months, when the dog has stopped growing - can give adult dog food.

3. Senior: a change in lifestyle will occur in the dog such as exercising less, moves more slowly, and sleeps more, and starts to put on weight. This is a good time to change to senior dog food.

Choosing a Dog Food:

" Always check with your veterinarian before choosing a food. My veterinarian prefers dry food over semi-moist and canned because it is better for the Cavalier's teeth. For puppies, the dry food can be moistened with water.

" Pay attention to the ingredients listed on dog food.

" The higher the ingredient the more of that ingredient there is in the food.

" Meat proteins such as chicken, lamb, or beef should appear at the top of the list.

" Grains should be next on the list and vegetables last.

" Beware of labels that list corn at one of the top ingredients. Dogs do not digest it easily.

Treats:

" Treats are a great way to reward you puppy and dog for good behavior.

" Treats are generally not as nutritious as regular food, so don't use too many.

" If you find yourself using a great deal of treats, try using the regular food as a treat.

" Treats should be soft in texture.

" Treats should be about the size of a large pea.

Water:

" All dogs require a great deal of water.

" You may want to limit the water for a puppy to specific times, such as once an hour on the hour, to help with potty training. Take the puppy to his potty place about 10 minutes after he drinks.

" Once the puppy is potty trained, fresh water should be left out for him at all times.

" Wash the bowel and give fresh water during the day.

Feeding Schedule:

" Puppies: Start with 3 feedings per day. As the puppy grows to be about 5-6 months old, you can gradually back the feeding down to 2 feedings per day.

" Take the puppy to his potty spot 10 minutes after he finishes eating.

" The amount of food you should feed at one time varies with the breed, age, and energy level of the dog. The label on the food bag or your veterinarian can give you an idea of the amount to feed per feeding.

Foods to Avoid:

" Chocolate

" Onions

" Dairy Products

" Bones from poultry and fish - tend to splinter, stick into their throat, or cut into their intestines.

" Grapes and raisons - have been linked to renal failure

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel makes a good family pet. She likes to live indoors and will do well with frequent walks or a properly fenced in exercise area. Please keep in mind that she will suffer in extreme heat. She is highly intelligent and generally good with children and other pets.

Good With Children?

Very good with older children. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a dog or puppy.

Good With Other Pets?

Yes, very good with other pets, especially if socialized early.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is 12 to 13 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 10 to 18 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is no exception. Be on the look out for syringomyelia (fluid filled cavities develop within spinal cord, also called neck scratchers disease, dog scratches in the air near the neck, can progress and can be painfull), canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), ear infections, back problems, heart murmers and dislocating kneecaps. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a moderate length, curl free, silky coat which sheds. She should be brushed regularly, paying particular attention to her feathery ears. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her. Her fur may need to be trimmed between the pads of her feet, her eyes checked and ears cleaned.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

Life Span

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can live between 9 and 14 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel History

She is believed to have originated in England. She was first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1996.

Whereas many dog breeds have origins that are cloaked in controversy, those of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are cloaked in confusion. So let's clear it up for you:

For starters, you must realize that there indeed does exist a breed known as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. There also exists a breed known as King Charles Spaniels. To further confuse the issue, both breeds are strikingly similar in appearance. So similar in fact, that some countries lump the two together under the common name of English Toy Spaniels.

And as if that weren't enough, we must also add that even though considered spaniels, they are not gun dogs; neither are they classed in the sporting group.

To begin digging our way out of this confusion we must start by accepting the fact that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the King Charles Spaniel were originally one and the same. Spaniels have always been a favorite of aristocratic families of Europe.

King Charles II was one who was so enamored by the little spaniels that the court's diary keeper noted: “They had access to all parts of Whitehall, even on state occasions.”

The diarist goes on to write:

“All I observed there was the stillness of the king playing with his dogs all the while and not minding to his business.”

Mary, Queen of Scots had an entire pack of small spaniels. Just before she was executed, one of the spaniels crept under her clothing, hung on tight and had to be removed by force. Toy spaniels appear in paintings by Gainsborough, Rubens, and even Rembrandt.

The little spaniels became so popular that over the years their pattern and characteristics changed. They developed diminutive characters, more similar to the Pekingese than to the miniature Springer Spaniel types. They eventually evolved as the spaniels King Charles love so much.

In 1920, an American living on Long Island in New York was reported to have put up some pretty interesting prize money at the famous Crufts Dog Show in England, for any breeder who could come up with a revival of the old type spaniel of the king's era. The British breeders accepted the challenge and started from the bottom.

They reconstructed the spaniel over the period of just a few generations, and finally produced the original-looking King Charles Spaniel. But herein lies the problem - instead of getting to wear the original title (which they really deserved since they were replicas of the originals), they were called Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. The addition of the name “Cavalier” would therefore distinguish them from what had evolved into the King Charles Spaniel of our present era.

From about the year 1926 until the present day, there are two separate breeds. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (most likely akin to the original King Charles Spaniel) and the King Charles Spaniel (far removed from what he was originally).

There seems to be a growing trend toward miniature dog breeds in the UK. Miniature and toy breeds of dogs are a great choice for a person or family who living in a flat, apartment or small home. There are many different breeds to choose from so you can choose the one that best suited for you and your lifestyle.

Small dog breeds love to be held and pampered. No matter what size dog you prefer there are hundreds of breeds to choose from.

Below you will find the description of some of the popular miniature and toy breeds that can make wonderful additions to any family no matter the lifestyle.

They are energetic and very playful. The Maltese makes a good companion for retirees, city dwellers and families. They are good with children and enjoy daily walks.

Lhasa Apso
The Lhasa Apso pronounced (lha-sah ap-so) is a tiny, lively and friendly companion. These charming and elegant looking dogs originated in Tibet. They require more care than other breeds when it comes to grooming. They need daily brushing and regular haircuts to avoid tangles and matting of their hair. They shed very little dandruff and make a great companion for a person with allergies.

No matter what size of dog you have you should consider buying pet insurance. It is like having health insurance on yourself, it is there when you need it for those unexpected large health-related bills. By having this kind of insurance you can ensure that your pet will get the best treatment if they are ever injured or seriously ill. They don’t have to be puppies to be eligible; as long as you keep the premiums up they will be covered for their lifetime.

The small and beautiful Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have long, softy, shiny coats if they are healthy and properly groomed. The coloring is typically black and tan or black and white with tan areas around the nose, above the eyes on the legs and feet. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel requires regular grooming attention or their coats will lose the attractive luster.

Weekly grooming is advised for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Chose a brush or comb that will not damage the coat or irritate the skin and make grooming a part of a regular routine from day one. Your Cavalier will truthfully benefit from brushing and combing more than once weekly if you can afford the time. The long hair of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel requires more grooming time than other breeds but it is worth the effort. If left undone for a long period of time, the dog's coat may become dirty, tangled and dull. Upkeep is not merely for looks sake, but a messy knot of hair makes future grooming a real pain.

Aside from brushing or combing, bathing is also an essential part of grooming your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Beginning at the puppy stage, bathe your Cavalier regularly. You may choose to do it on your own or opt for a professional dog salon where they can take care of some other details along the way. While they can do some of your chores, you will be required to pay close attention to ear cleanings and brushing. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, like many Spaniels, are susceptible to ear problems so when grooming the ears always check the cleanliness of the ear opening and remove any excess particles that could cause future problems. This is not only good for your dog's health, but will also make them feel comfortable and happier after each time its done.

For such a small dog, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel demands a lot of attention both emotionally and hygienically. You should always be aware of your dog's personal care needs and note the area that need the most attention. Eyes can be another annoyance for your Cavalier if you are not attentive enough. Carefully brush and clean around the dog's eyes. If neglected the long hair will get into their sensitive eyes risking future complications. The nails and feet also demand special care because this small breed does not need or get much exercise. As a result, their nails grow quickly and will often need to be attended to regularly. In addition, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels tend to have problem feet that should be checked every time the nails are clipped. Be sure to inspect the pads, making sure that they are not cracked or full of hair between toes. Through regular bathing and brushing you will be able to monitor and take care of most issues that may occur with you Cavalier.

This regular routine of grooming will prevent health problems through early detection. It is always best to take care of all problems, no matter how minor, from the beginning. This will avoid bigger issues from arising later. As with all dogs if you look after and regularly care for your King Charles Cavalier Spaniel he will appreciate the gesture and return it with great love and companionship.

Each year, more and more new dog breeds are added to the already growing list. Currently, the American Kennel Club, or AKC, recognizes over 150 different breeds and has seven different groups to categorize them. These groups include; sporting, working, toy, terrier, hound, herding, and non-sporting breeds.

The working category of breeds refers to those canines who aren't merely pets or companions for humans, but rather are working animals that are now or have been trained to perform certain tasks. The working breed category includes: border collie, boxer, german shepherd, great dane, labrador retriever, rottweiler, st. Bernard, siberian husky.

Terriers are a lively group of dogs that were originally bred for hunting small animals such as rabbits and foxes, with most types coming from the British Isles. This category includes some well known dog breeds such as: american pit bull, australian, boston, bull, cairn, fox, jack russell, rat, scottish, welsh, west highland.

Also called teacup or tiny, the Toy category features the smallest of dogs who generally weigh under 20 to 25 pounds and include: Bichon Frise, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Dachshund, Havanese, Maltese, Papillon, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Pug, Shih Tzu, Toy and Miniature, Poodles, Yorkshire Terrier.

There are also categories that use other criteria to describe dogs, such as those that are considered hypoallergenic or non-shedding. Some of these include: Airedale, Basenji, Cairn, Kerry Blue, Norfolk, Tibetan, and Welsh Terriers; Chinese Crested, Poodle, Schnauzer

A growing number of 'designer dogs' that mix certain breeds are becoming popular. These include many dogs that are part Poodle:

- Labradoodle (Labrador and Poodle)

- Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel and Poodle)

- Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever and Poodle)

- Maltipoo (Maltese and Poodle)

- Schnoodle (Schnauzer and Poodle)

Dog breeds may also be grouped by the size and weight of the dog.

- Toy breeds are 10 pounds or less.

- Small breeds are 10 to 25 pounds.

- Medium breeds are 25 to 50 pounds.

- Large breeds are 50 to 75 pounds.

- Extra large breeds are over 75 pounds.

While any dog can be trained to be good around children and toddlers, there are those who seem to have an extra affinity and tolerance for kids. And of course, any dog who is not trained or poorly socialized will not do well with children. Some of the breeds known for being good for families with children include:

- Basset Hound

- Bulldog

- Collie

- English Setter

- Golden Retriever

- Newfoundland

- Samoyed

- Standard Poodle

How to Choose the Right Dog Breed for You

There are many different variables to consider when trying to decide on the right breed of dog for you and your family. Before trying to pick which type of dog would do best in your home, ask yourself the following questions:

Training: All dogs require some type of obedience training and house training, but some need a bit more work than others. Do you have the time and patience necessary to train certain types of dogs?

Size: Do you have the room in your home and yard to accommodate a dog, and if so, what size?

Exercise/walking requirements: Do you have the time and energy it takes to see that a dog has the proper amount of exercise they need to stay happy and healthy?

Grooming and shedding: Is anyone in your home allergic to animals? Do you have the resources and time to devote to grooming your dog on a regular basis?

Choosing the right dog for your family is a bigger decision than you may initially think. There are about 330 pure breeds and almost another 80 that were developed by breeders by mixing different combinations of pure breeds.

Some breeds were mixed in ways that kept the characteristics, yet caused the dogs to be larger or smaller than the original breed. With so many choices, you have to think of each dog breed as having specific characteristics, temperament, size, function and abilities.

Each dog within that breed will share some common elements. For example, some dogs who were hunting dogs in times past have been bred differently to reduce the hunting instinct and make the dog more suitable as the pet for a family whose only "hunting" is stopping at grocery store or fast food to bring home dinner.

Major categories of dog breeds include: toys, companions, guards, working, spaniels, terriers, sighthound, scent hounds, spitz and herding. This doesn't include the famous "Heinz 57" - or pound mutt, whose exact heritage is unknown.

Each of the breeds is known for its ability to perform certain jobs. Historically, all dogs were working dogs - helping with sheep herding, cattle tending, fetching game, guarding property or tracking escapees.

House pets were not common as they are today. Each dog breed still carries the genetic code for its original type of work. You need to know how that dog is genetically programmed before you bring him home.

The dog that's naturally a watchdog won't be the cuddly playmate for your small children. The greyhound, particularly the rescued greyhound, is gentle and quiet, but they must have plenty of outdoor time to run. As a dog that can gain speeds of up to 45 mph, the greyhound is not a dog for couch potatoes.

If you want a medium to large dog that will be easily trained and protective over your children, then choose a pastoral or herding dog like the Old English sheepdog, Collie or Welsh Corgi. The instincts they have for keeping sheep in the pasture adapt to keeping your children inside the backyard while keeping intruders outside.

When having a dog means a smaller pet that's purely for amusement with little expectation, then look at the toy dog breed. Among this group, you find Chihuahua, Poodle, Manchester Terrier, Pug, Pekingese, Shih Tzu and King Charles Spaniel. Don't expect any work from this group. Toy dogs are masterful at finding ways for you to work for them.

The hunting breed has a proud tradition as the faithful companion and partner to hunters. These dogs include the Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, English Springer Spaniel, English Setter, Irish Setter and Cocker Spaniel. Even if you don't hunt, give these dogs the kind of open field exercise that makes them feel useful in the way that's part of their heritage.

Some breeds require space, while others need primping for show that rivals what you see among fashion models. Perhaps the easiest breed to bring home and love is the "pound mutt." In all shapes and sizes, these dogs have endured hardships that landed them in the shelter, when all they want is a family to love. Bring one home and you'll have a friend for life.

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes and have a whole range of very different personalities and characteristics. There are literally hundreds of breeds of pedigree dogs and an infinite number of mixed breed dogs. Hopefully, when you get a dog you are about to spend the next ten to fifteen years with your new pet. So it is very important that you make a good decision in the type of dog that you choose.

You want to ensure maximum compatibility with the dog so that you have a harmonious relationship together and that the dog fits in with your lifestyle, accommodation and fulfils what it is that you want to get out of owning a dog. From all of the choice of dog breeds available then, where do you start in choosing the type of dog that is right for you?

There are obviously some very basic and important considerations to start off with such as: one dog or more, size of the dog, long hair or short, character and personality type of the dog and whether it is important that the dog is good with children or not.

Domestic dogs were almost certainly descended from wolves and adapted, by selective breeding, over the years to produce a much human friendlier animal, often with specific work purposes in mind.

For simplicity, modern dogs are often divided up into seven broad categories based on their characteristics and what they were bred to do. When choosing a dog it can be helpful to start off with which broad group of dog is most appealing to you, before looking at the individual breeds within the group in more detail. In order to help you do this I have summarised the seven main types of dog below.

Working dogs - Dogs have been bred to perform a variety of useful working tasks including pulling heavy equipment, guarding and retrieving. Dogs in this group often have very strong instinctive characteristics, which are of benefit for the particular task that they were bred to perform, such as high activity levels and stamina, or being strong willed and protective. These dogs are loyal and affectionate but do require a lot of exercising. Typical dog breeds within this category would include the Alaskan Malamute, Doberman, Boxer and St Bernard.

Pastoral (or herding) dogs - These dogs were bred predominantly to herd domestic animals. They have a very strong chase instinct to assist in their herding functions and need a great deal of exercise. They are generally very intelligent and enjoy challenging play with toys. They were bred to work closely with humans and will develop very strong bonds with their owners. Typical examples of breeds within this category are the Border Collie, German Shepherd and Finnish Lapphund.

Terriers - These were bred to catch and kill vermin or to help in hunting sports. They are usually fairly small and have strong predatory instincts. They can be dangerous around small pets unless they have been raised with them. They are often fairly feisty characters but are usually affectionate and outgoing with their owners. Typical examples are the Jack Russell Terrier, Airedale Terrier and the West Highland White Terrier.

Gundogs (or sporting dogs) - Gundogs were bred to help flush out game and retrieve shot animals. They are very sociable dogs that like a lot of contact with humans and often have a soft chew, so as not to damage the retrieved animals. This means that they can be very playful dogs and enjoy lots of toy play and are good with children. Good examples within this group are the pointer, Weimeraner and Labradors.

Utility dogs - These are a mixed group of dogs with various traits from each of the other groups so they really need looking at individually. Examples of utility dogs include the Dalmatian, Bulldog and Chow Chow.

Hounds - Hounds were bred to track and hunt prey and work with humans in catching the animals. They have very strong chase instincts and often a very deep bark but tend not to use it unnecessarily. They are used to living in packs and are therefore very sociable; they can appear lazy at times but will benefit from occasional long energetic runs. Typical examples include the Afghan hound, Beagle and the Bloodhound.

Toy dogs - These were bred mainly for companionship and have most of the working traits bred out of them. Most are fairly small dogs and they are usually pretty well mannered , like a lot of human contact and have a desire to please their owner. They are often well suited to those without much space but can be especially prone to ill health. Typical examples of toy dogs include the Chihuahua, King Charles Spaniel and Pekingese.

These groups are obviously fairly broad and whichever breeds you are considering should be looked at and researched in more detail. Ideally, you should visit the appropriate dog breeders or rescue centres and see the dogs for yourself before making a final decision.
With the many dog breeds you have to choose from it can be hard to decide who to bring into your family. There are things you should analyze when choosing your dog for a pet.

You should look at the care, training, and character of the dog breed before making your decision. You may also want to speak with a dog breeder about all aspects of the dog and what to expect. They can help you in determining the right choice and find the right dog for you. One of the many dog breeds available is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This dog is considered a toy as they love to play, but don't really have the body type for other activities.

This is a small dog only weighing ten to eighteen pounds with a height of eleven to thirteen inches. You will notice most of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeds are black and tan or white, black and red, or just red. They have a medium length hair that is straight rather than curled, except on the ears where it is a bit wavy. You will also find it is a silky coat rather than coarse or completely soft. They tend to shed lightly, but should be brushed often.

As the name suggests they are of the spaniel breed with an elegance to their demeanor. They are one of the most common lap dogs you will find. They also tend to be loyal, gentle, and great for playing catch and retrieve with. If there is water around you may find they are taking a dip, just to have a little more fun in the day. You will also find they make good hunting dogs if you train them from puppies.

However the most important character trait is the family orientation of the dog. They love to be pampered and live indoors despite the burst of energy. They make great pets for households with other dogs, but sometimes little children are not a favorite. They prefer the pampering rather than being tugged on.

For training you will find the dog is obedient and happy to learn new things. They don't like to be ignored so allowing plenty of time for attention and activities is the best you can do for them toward happiness. During training you will want to have a gentle nature and plenty of positive reinforcement.

Care for this type of dog will include having at least a small home like an apartment or condo. They don't need a lot of space, but you will need to have a fenced in yard where they can run when you don't have the time for exercise. You will also find the medium hair tangles quite often so brushing once a day or weekly will help you keep them groomed and looking stately. As with some breeds the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is prone to certain health issues.

They can have diabetes, cataracts, deafness, allergies, and heart abnormalities. To prevent disease with your dog you will want to have yearly visits with the vet as well as understand the proper nutrition they require. You will also want to keep checking behind the ears for problems or insects. This is a prime spot for trouble.

This is one of the gentlest dogs you will find. You will enjoy adding them to your family and know that they don't take up as much room as some of the larger breeds.
