The ALPHA line is available for both dogs and cats in Chicken, Turkey Meal & Duck Formula and Trout, Salmon Meal & Whitefish Formula, as well as an additional Lamb, Chicken Meal & Rabbit Formula for dogs.

“Combining multiple proteins, including fiber-rich garbanzo beans, with fruits and vegetables like zucchini and blueberries for dogs and pumpkin and garden greens for cats, make ALPHA different from anything else on the market,” said Heather Govea, Senior Vice President of Independent Sales & Corporate Marketing at Natural Balance®. “We are thrilled to hear Pet Product News International recognizes the innovation and function behind our formulation.”

Boston Terrier will know more dished head with erect ears. Although this dog is not large, has all the advantages of larger breeds, the breed was formed in America for over 100 years.

More information HERE and HERE

The history of the breed dates back to 1860, when they start to cross the English terriers with English bulldogs. The goal was to get a dog that combines characteristics of both breeds - Bulldog head and body of a terrier. Then bulldogs strongly differing from modern. They were not so short-legged and massive, but they were more mobile and more like small bulmastifi or modern American Bulldog. Today extinct English terrier had a strong neck, bulky and muscular chest, which fully correspond to its purpose - to combat rodents and ground animals.
The modern Boston Terrier owes much to Hooper's Judge, resulting from the crossing of the English white terrier male with female English bulldog. Hooper's Judge was quite impressive - he weighed about 15 kg. Cross it with a white female, weighing 9 kg. Thus was obtained Well's Eph, which occurs in the pedigrees of many modern Boston Terriers. Well's Eph weighed about 13 kg and its coloration was dark brindle with white markings.

In 1878 in Boston was held the first dog show. The name "Boston Terrier" then not yet been recognized and these dogs participated under the name bulterier. In 1888 was formed a special category "bulterieri with rounded head and all colors." Lovers of these dogs from Boston and its environs had to overcome powerful resistance to breeders and bulldogs bulterierite who fought with all means "round heads".
In 1889, rebellious enthusiasts from Boston created bulterier American Club, which was the first step towards formal recognition of the breed, which at first was called by different names: zaoblenoglav n Bull Terrier Head bullet, American bulterier. In March 1891 Charles Liland 40 fans gathered 'round their heads "to develop the breed standard, which initially called American bulterier. Later he renamed the Boston Terrier, not to be confused with the white English bulterier. Thus emerged the modern name of the breed was created and the American Club of Boston terriers.

With a Labrador Retriever, you can never go wrong. As it turns out, Labrador Retrievers are the perfect mix of positive qualities anyone would expect from a pet. Their gentle and outgoing nature comes hand in hand with an eagerness to please their masters. They love being around people and take pleasure in garnering attention. Dogs of this breed are also incredibly alert and intelligent which makes them exceptionally easy to train. With a simple training method backed by positive reinforcement, Labrador Retrievers can easily be taught to obey various commands.

Since Labrador Retrievers display a calm and patient demeanor, they make great family dogs. It is not in their nature to snap or act aggressive which is why they would be especially great for families with little children. And as their name dictates, these dogs are excellent retrievers and have fun doing so. Historically speaking, Labrador Retrievers were trained to live and work on fishing boats. One of their tasks included jumping overboard whenever the fishermen would drop their net lines or if it got tangled up in something. As these dogs would retrieve the net lines, they would bring them back to their masters on the boat. In doing so, they saved fishermen time and money - not to mention ensuring their safety. Not only this, Labrador Retrievers were also relied upon to accompany hunters in their journeys. It is to no surprise that these dogs got their names from the Portuguese word "Labrador," meaning laborer.

However, even with all these pleasing qualities, pet owners must keep in mind that just as is the case with other dog breeds, Labrador Retrievers are not for everyone. Labrador Retrievers can give a lot of attention to their masters but they require a lot of attention as well. They have a very pleasing demeanor but they have a lot of pent up energy that needs to be released through physical exercise as well. At times, these dogs can be quite dependent as well since they dislike being left alone.

Another thing to take into consideration here is that Labrador Retrievers may not match everyone's needs as well. If you are looking for a guard dog, Labrador Retrievers are not the way to go. These dogs are incredibly alert and will draw attention to abnormalities by barking but 99% of the time, these dogs are more inclined to play with others rather than act as a guardian.

Labrador Retrievers are indeed the most popular dogs in America. The American Kennel Club attests to this. Even so, never treat these tidbits of information as the be all and end all of the matter. The decision is still up to you. Just make sure to carefully consider the various aspects involved in making such a big decision. Determine whether you have the time to cater to its demands and ensure that this is the type of dog that would best fit your lifestyle.

The Boston Terrier is one of the few breeds of dog that America can claim as its own. Around 1870, Robert C. Hooper of Boston purchased Hooper's Judge, a cross between an English Bulldog and an English White Terrier. Hooper's Judge was bred with a smaller female, and that litter bred with French bulldogs, providing the beginnings of the Boston Terrier, America's first non-hunting dog. Though originally bred for dog fighting, Boston Terriers are no longer used for that purpose and the aggressive traits have been bred out of the breed.

Also know as the Boston Bull, Boston Terriers are compact, muscular dogs with short, wide muzzles, dark, large round eyes, short tails and pointy erect ears. Their short coats come in black and white or brown and white and are easy to groom. Some breeders have tried selling all white Boston Terriers as rare. However, an all white coloring generally indicates a genetic weakness, making them more prone to health problems. Though Boston Terriers do shed, it is not excessive and with regular brushing, the shedding is easy to manage. Baths are only given when necessary.

With the proper care, Boston Terriers can live 15 years or longer, but usually average about 13 years. Boston Terriers will grow to an average of 15 to 17 inches in height and 10 to 25 pounds in weight. Their smaller size makes them suitable for all types of living environments including apartments. Boston Terriers do need regular sessions of walking and playtime, and do not require large amounts of space for their exercise. They are sociable and friendly dogs that are described as intelligent and energetic. Boston Terriers make good family pets and companions and are generally good around children and other pets. They make fair watchdogs; some Boston Terriers will bark only when necessary and others will never bark.

Boston Terriers are prone to breathing problems, due to their short snouts. Some of them will snore when sleeping, which can be a sign of a more serious medical condition, but it can be corrected with surgery. Exercise caution when out in excessive heat and humidity with a Boston Terrier, as they are more prone to heat exhaustion due to their short snouts. Boston Terriers are more likely to experience problems with heart and skin tumors and are more likely to suffer eye injuries due to their prominent eyes.

There is a website that has great information on Boston Terriers and most other breeds of dogs. It has details that pertain to a dog breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

The smallest dog breed in the world, the Chihuahua was discovered in Mexico in 1850, and subsequently introduced to America. The popularization of the Chihuahua as a pet was a result of media coverage given to celebrities who adopt Chihuahuas as pets such as Marilyn Monroe and Paris Hilton. There are two official Chihuahua breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club today. These are the Long-haired Chihuahua and the Short-haired Chihuahua. Unofficially, other different breeds of Chihuahuas exist. These include the Teacup Chihuahua, Mini Chihuahua and Toy Chihuahua amongst others. The origins of these unofficial names were a result of Chihuahua breeders who dub their dogs accordingly based on their full grown size.

The Long-haired Chihuahua is characterized by their smooth undercoat and long overcoat. The texture of its coat is long, thin and smooth to touch. The Long-haired Chihuahua has large eyes and erect ears, similar to that of a Pomeranian. In fact, it is not difficult for most people to mistaken a Long-haired Chihuahua for a Pomeranian given such similar characteristics. Surprisingly, this Chihuahua breed sheds little hair as compared to its Short-haired cousin. As a result, it is relatively popular with people who suffer from allergies. However, its long overcoat of hair can take a relatively long time to reach its full grown length, in most cases as long as a few years. It is important for owners of this breed of Chihuahua to frequently brush the hair of their Long-haired Chihuahua to prevent tangles that may occur to the hair of the Long-haired Chihuahua. It is also important for owners of the Long-haired Chihuahua to bath their pets on a regular monthly basis to prevent fleas and to maintain hygiene standards of their Long-haired Chihuahua.

Comparatively, the Short-haired Chihuahua as its name suggests has a shorter coat of hair as compared to its Long-haired cousin. However, it tends to shed more hair as compared to the Long-haired Chihuahua. Texture of the overcoat of this breed of Chihuahua is also different as compared to the Long-haired Chihuahua. Given its shorter coat of hair, the Short-haired Chihuahua is popular amongst people living in relatively warm countries.

Unofficial breeds of Chihuahuas such as the Teacup Chihuahua, Mini Chihuahua and Toy Chihuahua. These breeds of Chihuahuas are comparatively smaller as compared to regular Chihuahuas. Amongst these unofficial breeds, the Teacup Chihuahua is the most popular as a result of extensive media coverage of Paris Hilton's Teacup Chihuahua, Tinkerbell Hilton. Spotted everywhere with Paris Hilton, Tinkerbell's small size allows it to fit snugly into the socialite's handbag. The small sized of these dogs make them popular with apartment dwellers as they do not require big open spaces as compared to other dogs. They are also relatively easy to train, sparing the owner the need to send them to dog schools for training. However, their small size results in greater fragility. These adorable dogs are extremely prone to health problems such as dehydration and respiratory problems. Their small size also means that they are unable to provide sufficient warmth for themselves, especially in colder countries.

In any case, Chihuahuas are relatively fragile pets and special attention must be accorded to taking care of them. Chihuahua adoption is also a long-term commitment as the average lifespan of these dogs is between 11 - 18 years. Given such, its is important for potential owners to consider carefully their ability to commit to their pets before adopting one.

Everyone loves a popular dog story, but did you ever wonder what dogs were the most popular in America, or globally?

And even if you know the answer, that is what is popular today, which will soon be the past. With an average life expectancy of around 12 years, it does not take long for real world ownership dog breed popularities to change. What is more interesting is what dog breeds people are searching for NOW online, because the dogs searched for now, will soon become the most popular dogs of tomorrow. People usually search for dog breeds they have or are going to purchase, and this article includes the top five dogs of five of the most dog loving countries in the world!

What I have done is mark the top breed search volume as 100% and compare all the other lower searched breeds to that value. Thus a French bulldog value of 67% means that this dog breed term in America, acreoss all languages, revieves approximately two thirds of the searches that the top breed German Shepherd does. This analysis is for the latest Google data release of February 2011.

AMERICA = [german shepherd] 100%; [french bulldog] 67%; [bernese mountain dog] 45%; [boxer dogs] 20%; [newfoundland dog] 20%

AUSTRALIA = [german shepherd] 100%; [labrador] 100%; [french bulldog] 82%; [pomeranian] 82%; [golden retriever] 82%

CANADA = [bernese mountain dog] 100%; [german shepherd] 100%; [golden retriever] 100%; [rottweiler] 100%; [pomeranian] 82%

UK = [beagle] 100%; [german shepherd] 100%; [rottweiler] 100%; [labrador] 100%; [pomeranian] 82%

IRELAND = [yorkshire terrier] 100%; [golden retriever] 81%; [german shepherd] 81%; [beagle] 63%; [rottweiler] 63%

Along with these breed statistics it is useulf to know the number of dog breeds that are included in each country's top fifty dog associated searches, and what the top breed search volumes are in absolute terms. These figures are:

America 7 breeds in top fifty searches, top breed 110,000 searches per month

Australia 13 breeds, top breed 6,600 searches

Canada 23; top breed 12,100 searches

UK ten breeds top breed 18,100 searches

Ireland eleven breeds, top breed 1,600 searches

Dog Analysis

America has the most dog associated searches and the top specific dog breed searches of any country. Yet it only has seven specific dog breeds in their top fifty dog associated searches, the lowest number of the five countries an analysed. America tends to have generic dog search related terms, rather than specific breed information. This is probably because there is an expectation that the large dog sites will contain all of the specific breed information etc that they may want. Unlike the other countries, the search volumes are not evenly spread between the breeds, there is a rapid drop off in search popularity between the top dog, German shepherd, and the fifth most searched breed, the newfoundland dog which only has 20% of the searches.

Australia has more dog breeds (13) in their top fifty searches, and on a per capita basis Australia has more dog related searches than America. However the top Australian breed specific search volume (for the German Shepherd) is less than 5% of America's top breed (also the German Shepherd). With Australia being. With Australia being about 14% of Americas population, America's top breed search is a spectacularly high volume (110,000 searches per month)

Canada has the most dog breeds (23) of all countries in their top fifty dog related searches. Its top dog searches of 12.100 is also very much lower than America's. This breed specific search strategy shows that Canadian's are very strongly attached to their specific breeds.

UK is the world's greatest dogs online search country per capita. It also has a very big dog ownership. Surprisingly it only has ten dog breeds in its top fifty searches. In general the UK is the most dog humane country with many lost dog home related searches in the top fifty terms.

Ireland only has a population near 3 million people and has a very close geographic proximity to the UK. It is also the second highest dog related search country per capita just behind the UK. But very similar to the UK it only has eleven specific dog breeds in its top fifty dog related searches.

CONCLUSIONS

The geographically widely spread countries have many similarities in their most popular dog searches. The German shepherd is the most popular searched dog breed in all countries except Ireland. The old family standards of Labrador and golden retriever are also well represented in the top searches, however there is also a tendency for larger dogs such as the boxer and Rottweiler, as well as small dogs such as the French bulldog. While the German shepherd has high online search popularity, the breed is also known to have several congenital (health) issues that may have owners searching for answers more than the other breeds.

This data gives a good indication as to what breeds each country values as well as where dog ownership is likely to be going and what future dog breeds are most likely to be the most popular in the real world.

Poodles are one of America's favorite dog breeds. They are one of the few dog breeds where there are actually three types. Another unique feature of this breed is that they are often crossed with other dog breeds to produce different poodle breeds.

Americans love poodles, in fact according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Poodles are the 8th most popular dog breed in America. Poodles have been consistently in the top 10 most popular dog breeds now for decades. One possible reason for all this popularity is that there are different types of poodles and poodle breeds.

The American Kennel Club acknowledges three different types of poodles. These types are the standard poodle, the miniature poodle, and the toy poodle. These different types are differentiated by size, with the size limits set by the AKC. The standard poodle must stand at least 15 inches tall at the shoulders. The miniature poodle must stand at least 10 inches tall, but no more than 15 inches tall at the shoulders. The toy poodle must be under 10 inches tall at the shoulders.

In order to show your poodle it must fit into one of these three sizes. Another requirement if you are going to show your poodle is that you will need to groom them according to show standards. Currently for poodles the only two cuts allowed are the Continental clip, or the English Saddle clip.

There are also several different poodle breeds. These dogs are created by the crossbreeding of two different purebred dogs. Some people call them hybrid poodles, but that is incorrect terminology. The correct terminology is crossbreed. Hybrid is the crossing of two different species.

Some common poodle crossbreeds are the cockapoo or the spoodle, which is made by crossing the poodle with a cocker spaniel. Another crossbreed is the goldendoodle, which is from a cross with a golden retriever.

One of the first crosses was done with a labrador retriever and called a labradoodle. The labradoodle was first bred by people wanting to make a hypoallergenic guide dog.

Poodles and labradors shed little and are hypoallergenic so the crossing of the two was hoped to result in a hypoallergenic dog, but the results were quite variable from litter to litter.

Poodles of all types and sizes have great personalities and get along great with children. The poodle is one of the most intelligent dog breeds and is actually a great hunting dog. In fact the poodle originated in Germany and was used as a hunting dog. Its thick curly coat was perfect for keeping them warm and dry when they had to run through water during hunts.

Poodles are very easily trained as well. They have been used in circuses for hundreds of years to entertain audiences. Housebreaking poodles if very easy because they learn very fast, and even teaching basic commands to poodles is much easier than other dog breeds.

As you can see there are several different types of poodles and poodle breeds. With so many to choose from you are bound to find a poodle that fits in great with your family.

Yorkshire Terriers, according to Yorkshire Terrier information sources, originally came from Scotland and bred with native terriers. The founding father was named Huddersfield Ben. Yorkshire Terriers were originally bred to kill mice and rats. There are very few records of dog breeding from this time. Yorkshire terriers were originally bred to kill rats, not to be a fashion accessory. They arrived in America as early as 1872 and have never looked back.

If you took a trip back in time to 1870, you probably would have a hard time recognizing a Yorkshire Terrier. In about one hundred thirty years, the breed has gone through tremendous changes in their looks and in their functions. But the Yorkshire Terrier has adapted to the great changes that the Industrial Revolution brought to the economy and to family life. Yorkies back then weighed about thirty pounds and came in more colors than just blue and tan.

Back in the 1870's, word was getting around about the great pups from a sire named Huddersfield Ben, who was born in 1865. Huddersfield Ben was considered an ideal dog - a champion ratter as well as being friendly and handsome. Any dog that resembled Huddersfield Ben had to have been from Yorkshire, where Ben lived. Yorkshire dog breeders kept their breeding methods secret so they could be assured of buyers. His puppies eventually became known as Yorkshire Terriers.

Back in 1865 - the year of Huddersfield Ben's birth - dogs were bred to exhibit useful qualities, not for their looks. There also was not much interest in keeping breeds pure. There are very few accurate records of dog breeding at this time. It is also thought that dog breeding was considered such a secret business that no records were kept for fear of the knowledge getting out to competitors. Yorkshire Terriers got their name because the breed was perfected in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire Terriers were bred to be specialists in killing rats. They were (and still are) thought to be more reliable at killing mice and rats than cats. They were also bred to bark when they found their prey and to let their masters know where they are. The mining industry thrived in Yorkshire at this time - and the mines were full of rats. They were until the Yorkshire Terriers got to work.

As time went on, the need for big working dogs decreased. People were living in smaller homes and needed smaller dogs they could physically control easily. The Yorkshire Terrier filled this niche admirably. They were a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Not only did they make great guard dogs, but were affectionate and did not need a lot of exercise. They were introduced to America in 1872.

Over the last century, Yorkshire Terriers have become ever smaller. The original Yorkies were about thirty pounds and came in several colors. Today's show Yorkies are not to exceed seven pounds and must be steel blue and tan (and have those colors in specific proportions). The hot trend is top breed Yorkies that tip the scales at three pounds, which has lead to concerns about the health of breeding such small dogs. The Yorkshire Terrier, as of 2006, is the second most popular purebred dog in America.

It is to no surprise that these dogs got their names from the Portuguese word 'Labrador,' meaning laborer.

The Bulldog was extremely popular in England during the 19th century, particularly around the area of Nottingham. Most of these dogs were very small, weighing in at less than 25 to 30 pounds. They made their way to France when a large number of lace workers headed to the area for work and brought their small toy Bulldogs with them.

The Frenchwomen absolutely adored these little dogs, specifically the ones that had erect ears. This feature of the ears were very common, but most people did not like this look back in England. Soon enough, many more of these clown-like looking dogs were brought to France by dog dealers, which were referred to as Bouledogue Francais.

As their popularity grew, the breed had caught the attention of wealthy families throughout the entire upper class. You could find French Bulldogs in some of the most prestigious homes throughout France. It was during this same time period that American travelers who were visiting France brought several Bulldogs back to the United States and began breeding them.

Soon an entire American club was created for this doog and 1898 they had sponsored one of the most popular and elegant dog shows that was ever displayed. This dog show was specifically for French Bulldogs and had attracted large numbers of wealthy spectators which helped the breed's popularity skyrocket in America. Their popularity among the rich continued to soar and the French Bulldog was rated the most popular show dog in the United States in 1913.

Personality

The French Bulldog is a fun-loving, clownish lapdog that enjoys playtime and being the center of attention. They love to cuddle and curl up next to you. These dogs are extraordinarily sweet, willing to please, and make great companions for anybody. They are slightly stubborn when it comes to training but once conditioned through obedience lessons, French Bulldogs can make great trainees.

Taking Care Of Your French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are quite small and like most toy-sized dogs, physical exercise can be met through a nice walk on the leash or a romp through the house. These dogs do not do well in hot weather but can take the cold if necessary. This is one breed that should be living indoors at all times. Also keep in mind that these dogs tend to wheeze, snore, and drool. Grooming care is minimal, with the occasional brushing once weekly. However the facial wrinkles should be cleaned on a daily basis.

Health Information

The average lifespan of a healthy French Bulldog is between 9 and 12 years. Major health issues include CHD, intervertebral disk disease, brachycephalic syndrome, and allergies. Minor problems that come up are hemivertebra and patellar luxation.

History

In the middle of the 19th century lace workers from Nottingham, England went to France for work. Their English Bulldogs traveled with these workers. Though these dogs weren't as popular in England, they were extremely well received by the French. They were welcomed as lapdogs for rich French women, who liked this toy bulldog that sported pointy ears.

Another theory says that this breed originated from the Chincha Bulldog of ancient Peru. The French Bulldog came to the United Sates in 1896 and debuted in New York at the Westminster Kennel Club's show.

General looks

It is a compact, toy, and muscular canine with a heavy bone structure.

Is This Your Breed?

The French Bulldog's teeth and claws need regular attention. Rubbing the dog's coat each day with a rough textured rag is advisable. Sparse exercise is needed.

Coat

The fur is middling fine, short, and flat.

Color

The three fur colors are fawn, brindle, and pied.

Locomotion

The proper motion is double tracking.

Personality

This breed gets on well with other pets. They are good dogs for children. They are alert and full of curiosity.

Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd is a bold, loving, smart and energetic member of the Herding Group. These dogs have an athletic build and are medium in size. With amazing agility and a powerful body, they can work hard all day without sacrificing speed or stamina. Australian Shepherd dogs were bred to guard livestock and to this day maintains the genetic drive to herd.

The temperament of the breed can vary from being overly playful with its owners to an imposing and courageous watchdog against intruders. They are typically friendly towards other dogs and pets, but reserved around strange people. Without proper exercise and mental stimulation through games and dog training, the Australian Shepherd tends to become bored and may act out in a destructive manner through barking and chewing.

A Brief History Of The Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd's assumed area of origin can be misleading because it is not actually an Australian Breed. Although the exact details of the dog's history is unclear, we do know that they made their way to the United States, from Australia, where they were used to herd sheep.

One theory suggests that the breed started when the Basque people of Europe settled in Australia with their sheepdogs, then relocated to America, bringing their dogs with them. The name “Australian Shepherd” was given due to the breed's past residence and function, but they were still largely known as the Basque dog.

The Australian Shepherd excelled at overcoming the harsh conditions of herding through rough terrain in both Australia and western America. They were crossed with various other breeds and were mostly kept under the radar in terms of popularity. During the 1950s, the breed gained exposure as they were seen in various dog trick shows and even in film.

The International English Shepherd Registry registered the very first Australian Shepherd (today known as the National Stock Dog Registry). The Australian Shepherd Club of America was formed in 1957, and in 1993 the AKC officially recognized the breed. Today the Australian Shepherd is still used as a sheep herder and can be seen winning herding trials.

Upkeep Requirements For The Australian Shepherd

This breed must have vigorous exercise on a daily basis, both physically and mentally. And with its ease of training ability and high intellectual levels, the Australian Shepherd is the perfect candidate for advanced obedience training. These dogs thrive on human contact and are not meant for sitting around the house all day.

Australian Shepherds can tolerate both hot and cool temperatures but should not live outdoors completely. The ideal living arrangement is to allow the Aussie to have access to a safe outdoors area during the day and to sleep inside with the family at night. Grooming requirements call for a heavy brushing of its thick coat about two to three times weekly.

Health Concerns

The average lifespan of the Australian Shepherd is between twelve and fifteen years. Major health concerns that run common in the breed are CEA and cataracts. Minor health issues include CEA, Pelger-Huet syndrome, hypothyroidism, CHD, iris coloboma, and nasal solar dermatitis. Rarely seen is PRA, PPM, distichiasis, PDA, epilepsy, lumbar sacral syndrome, and vWD. Veterinarians suggest that the Australian Shepherd get specifically tested for DNA for CEA, hip, thyroid, and eye problems.

History

Theories about where this breed originated abound. Some assert it was developed in the U.S.A from Australia, European, and Latin American herding dogs. Many of the herding dogs came from Pyrenees Mountains located between France and Spain. They went with their masters that hurried to the Gold Rush in California.. When they arrived in California, owners began to bred them with the dogs from South America and Australia.

In the 1880's the Basque herders that first went to Australian came to California. So herding dogs from different places were bred together, as many people herded sheep in the United States. They bred them to get the best dog for the western climate.

General Looks

This is a medium bodied dog and his body is solid. The working canines have shortened coats and the bone structure ranges from lighter to heavier. Those bred for shows have longer coats and the heavy bone frame.

Is This Your Breed?

The Australian Shepherd needs strenuous exercise each day. The coat needs brushing each week. This bred is friendly, though not as much with strangers. It is a good family dog that likes being close.

Coat

It is straight, resists weather, and is a double coat. The undercoat's quantity changes according to the climate.

Color

The colors are blue and red merle and black. Markings are white or tan.

Locomotion

His movement is agile and smooth.

Personality

He is smart, active, and likes to play. He has a guarding instinct. He is faithful.

1. Written Guarantee: Good breeders provide written guarantees against genetic disease. It is essential to get a guarantee on the hips and eyes of your pup, given the epidemics of hip dysplasia and various forms of progressive blindness among the nation's dogs. The guarantee entitles you to a refund of the price of the puppy or a replacement puppy should there be a problem. The guarantee should also allow you to take your new puppy to your own vet within a certain period of time in order to have its good health independently confirmed before the sale is considered final.

Beyond the guarantee of your pup, you want to see copies of the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) certificate on the hips of both parents, plus the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (GERF) certificate on the eyes of both parents. Do not take the breeder's word that the parent animals are so registered. Good breeders will not be troubled by your request.

However, you must be prepared to run into the occasional breeder whom will not want to comply with your request. You are almost sure to run into "prominent" breeders who don't believe in having their dogs' hips and eyes checked, even if they are from seriously afflicted breeds.

Both in a personal quest for a dog and in researching this information I had this experience again and again. For instance, there is a dog breed about which Michele Lowell says in Your Purebred Puppy: A Buyer's Guide, "He is susceptible to hip dysplasia and serious tumors." She urges: "Buy only from OFA-registered parents." A leading breeder of this breed, a person who sits on the national club's breed standard committee, told me she didn't have her animals OFA-certified because "I've never had any hip problems. If I ever start, I'll have my dogs checked." Even in the midst of a plague of canine hereditary disease, this ton-of-cure-is-worth-an-ounce- of-prevention attitude is still common. Be ready to decide for yourself if you find it acceptable.

2. Restricted Transfers: Responsible breeders are answering the distress call of America's dogs by trying to minimize inappropriate breeding. One way to do this is with "restricted transfers." These can involve a contract between the new owner and the breeder stipulating that the dog will not be bred until it is old enough to be tested for inherited disease and has been certified disease free. Some restricted transfers require that the animal be spayed or neutered at six months of age, with AKC papers not passing to the purchaser until this is done. You may not be interested in acquiring a pet under such conditions, but you can be sure that breeders imposing them are deeply committed to improving the quality of their breed.
