Do You Think a Yorkshire Terrier Is a Good Pet for an 11 Year Old?

by Dogs.net on July 6, 2011

My sister is 11 and she wants a yorkshire terrier, and I know both are really hyper, so help?
If you dont think that it is, can you give me an idea of what kind of dog would be good for an 11year old who won't be quiet, who loves small dogs and who is very hyper?

If your sister is very hyper, a Yorkie may not be for her, they are very fragile dogs, and a young enegetic child could easily hurt such a tiny dog, try to steer her onto something bigger and ‘tougher’….like a labrador

As long as the 11yo is responsible and willing to take time to train it. good luck.

I am just going to say that out of the 5 yorkies we have (I often rescue) only 1 is “hyper” and thats onlt for about 30 min of the day during playtime. I baby sit a 2yr old and they are all great with her. I even have a 3lb yorkie and she is great with him. I suggest you visit the local animal shelter and try to find your next pet.

just saying not all yorkies are hyper and lots of yorkies in rescue puppies and adults

a dog should be a decision made by the whole family :) good luck
