ive got a yorkshire terrier off a friend and im picking him up on friday. are there any things to do when training him etc. Thanks
this is how we came to getting him- my aunt knows a woman who brought 2 dogs, they are 2 boys from the same litter. Naturally because they are brothers they are scrapping but they are lovely dogs, they are fully house trained and that. Advice on toys what to do at night etc would be much appreciated!

DO NOT USE PEE PADS! the breeder we got minnie from used them and we’re having a hard time training her to poo and pee outside! Ask yourself why are they getting rid of a 8 month old because normally even friends lie about this (the breeder we got our Miniature pincher from said “she had the occasional” accident when in fact she hasn’t a clue how to pee or poop outside. remember to try and be patient with him because he’s in new surroundings!
I would to start off with crate train the pup. If the pup is in its crate at night you know it is safe and warm and can come to no harm. The pup will protest to begin with, with the usual barks and howls and whines lol but you have to ignore that and do not go down to the dog, unless you think she is in pain of course. If you do go down, do not touch or talk to the dog, just walk in the room glance at her to make sure she is ok then leave the room again. It will only take a few nights and she will soon settle down into a routine.
Good toys are kong toys they are strong and you can place food in them for the dog to try to work out how to get at it, also good for the nature of the breed of your dog as they have that drive in their nature.
Try to play games with them that do not involve tug of war, this can cause aggression, rather than tugging on a toy, teach her to retrieve it after you have thrown it. When he fetches it back to you make a big fuss of him, this is all the reward he needs. I cant stress enough that exercise is key to a well behaved dog. You should be walking your dog at least 45 mins a day no matter what size or breed. Always try to train after a walk as the dog has drained its energy, training a dog that has boundless energy is a waste of time.
Get yourself a long training lead and take him to a park, allow your dog to wonder away from you whilst on the lead. Call him back with a one word command such as come, and stick to that word. Do not use his name. If the dog does not come which he wont at first, then start to reel him back in to you and give him lots of fuss, when he is back with you. Let him go again and repeat over and over each time you take him out. Only tell him once to come, if he does not respond reel him back in straight away. This teaches the dog he has to listen and optional deafness is not allowed lol.And that you are going to make it happen anyway so he will soon learn.
You have to make yourself the most interesting thing in that park, so his attention is focused on only you and he is not distracted by his surroundings.
