BCWRA Whippet Racing June 7, 2009 at a school field in Abbotsford, BC. Several times a year the club to which Kathy belongs, the BC Association of Crazy People with Fast Dogs, drags the starting box and lure machine out to whatever field they can book where they set up a temporary race course. They do this just for fun -- no betting, no purse, just ribbons and bragging rights. The faster dogs get up to about 45mph (75km/h). They reach full speed in only two strides. If there was ever any question about whether or not the dogs enjoy it, this video provides the obvious and unequivocal answer.

The Whippet is said to have come from a combination of Greyhound dogs mixed with smaller dogs during the 18th century in the attempt to create an animal that could be used by peasants for poaching small game such as rabbits.

With its direct roots from the Greyhound dog, which are genetically designed to race as fast as possible, Whippet dogs entertained people in contests called “snap dog” games. People would place bets on the Whippet of their choice who would snap up as many rabbits as they possible could before escaping from the game circle.

It is also theorized that these dogs were probably crossed with ratting terriers in order to increase speed and quickness. When the Industrial Revolution started, this was the time that the true Whippet breed started to emerge. Huge numbers of rural workers had moved their entire livelihoods to industrialized areas. Along with them came their Whippet pet dogs that was a good source of entertainment.

Even when there were no rabbits around for the people to watch their Whippets play snap dog competitions, they found out that these dogs were just as excited to race towards other objects, particularly a waving flag. This was the dawn of flag racing, which became very popular amongst coal workers. Referred to as the “poor man's race horse”, Whippets grew in large numbers.

Whippets were not only used for entertainment, but also to help the poor earn extra income and helped procure food for the family. These dogs were loved, valued, and shared everything with its human companions.

Whippet racing is still somewhat popular at current times, but it never took off quite as commercially as Greyhound racing did. As a result, it remains an amateur sport. The AKC officially recognized the breed in 1888 and through further mixing with the Italian Greyhound, many beautiful and aesthetically appealing Whippets have been born and raised in many family households.

Personality

Of all of the sighthound dogs, the Whippet is claimed by dog enthusiasts to be the most obedient and demonstrated. If you are looking for a quiet house dog that is a totally devoted and loyal companion, this dog will make the perfect pet. Whippets are extraordinarily gentle with kids and is on the overly-sensitive side, both mentally and physically. They do not fare well when treated harshly or yelled at.

Taking Care Of Your Whippet

Whippet dogs love to run but can also do very well in a small-sized apartment, so long as daily walks are given. While many dogs can sleep and live in standard conditions, Whippets need a very warm and soft bed to be comfortable in. It absolutely hates cold weather and is not meant to live outdoors. Grooming does not take much work, if any at all. The hair on their coat is extremely short and it rarely gets that musty “doggy smell” most dogs get.

Health Information

Whippet dogs have a lifespan of up to 16 years, with the average being 13 to 14 years. They are very healthy with only one major health concern to watch out for, and that is potential eye problems. There are absolutely no minor issues to worry about and veterinarians suggest that you have your Whippet tested for eye problems throughout its life.

Description: The Whippet is a medium sized dog in the sight hound group. The dog will be 19 to 22 inches at the shoulder and the bitch 18 to 21 inches. This dog can range in weight from about 25 to 45 pounds. The Whippet is a very streamlined dog with a long neck and legs. The chest is deep for aid in running. The short coat of the Whippet can be found in nearly all colors including white with brindle, white with black, yellow patches, blue, or red. The color may also be solid. The Whippet will live for approximately 12 to 15 years. The name comes from the expression "whip it", which meant to do something quickly. This dog is also known as the Snapdog.

History: The Whippet was bred from the Greyhound, the Italian Greyhound, and an unknown terrier at the end of the 1800s in England. The Whippet found itself used as a hunter of rabbits by the peasants, but became a dog used for races during the migration to the cities during the Industrial Revolution. It became known as the "poor man's racehorse", and sums of money were bet on the outcome of dog races. Mill workers from England brought the Whippet with them when they emigrated to America and helped to establish dog racing here.

Temperament: The Whippet is a docile, affectionate dog that exhibits a good disposition. This dog gets along well with children and will play with them. As the dog has a sensitive skin, however, the children should be instructed to take care not to hurt the Whippet accidentally. This dog is calm in the house, reserving its play for outdoors. It should be remembered that the Whippet was developed as a hunting dog and its instincts are still strong. This dog will chase and kill small animals and cats. If the dog is socialized with cats while young, there will generally be no problem. The Whippet makes an excellent companion dog and loves to cuddle and receive attention from its owner.

Health Issues: This is a fairly healthy breed with few health problems. Whippets do not seem to suffer from hip dysplasia. This breed is sensitive to the cold and should be protected from winter temperatures. The Whippet has trouble with some anaesthetics (barbiturates), and your veterinarian should be aware of this before any surgery is performed.

Grooming: The short coat of the Whippet does not require much grooming, just the occasional brushing and bath is all. The teeth, however, should be brushed on a daily basis to prevent build up of tartar, and a professional cleaning is recommended once a year. The Whippet's skin is rather thin and delicate, so care must be taken to prevent cuts or scratches.

Living Conditions: Physically and emotionally, the Whippet is a housedog. This dog bonds very closely to its family and is happiest when near them. Although it has been said that the Whippet can live in an apartment, it should be remembered that it needs a good deal of exercise. The Whippet is built for running and should be given an opportunity to burn off its excess energy through a brisk walk, at the very least, every day. The Whippet must sleep in a warm spot and should be dressed in warm clothes during cold weather.

Description: The Whippet is a sight hound of medium size. The dog is 19-20 inches in height, and the bitches' height is 18-21 inches. Their weight is 25-45 pounds this breed looks similar to their cousin, the greyhound. The Whippet has a long skull, which is lean and has a very wide gap between the ears. The muzzle is long and tapers to the nose. The nose is dark brown, black or dark blue. The teeth meet in a scissor bite. This dog has small ears that rose shape. Their ears are held back and folded, except when the dog is excited, where they are semi-perked. The Whippet has oval shaped eyes was a dark in colour. They have straight front legs with feet that are thick and can be either cat like or hare like. This breed has a deep chest. A long tail which has a slight lift at the end is held low. This breed has a short coat that is smooth and all colours are accepted. The Whippet lives to about 15 years.

History: The Whippet came into being by crossing the Italian Greyhound, the Greyhound, and an unknown Terrier type breed. This was in the 19th century. The name means to move quickly "whip it" and, as its name suggests, it is a very fast dog reaching speeds of up to 37 mph. This dog has a history in racing, often being called the poor mans race horse. In the UK, there were racing tracks in nearly every city where the poorer man would go to watch the Whippet race and place bets on who will win. Due to the fact, this is a sight hound the dogs would race chasing a "rabbit" that was not a real rabbit but a mechanical rabbit, that is on the edge of the track, going faster than the dogs. This sport was popular until the mid 1980's when it lost popularity. The Whippet was first recognized by the AKC in 1888 and the English Kennel Club in 1891. This dog has been used for hunting, as a watchdog, sighting, racing, agility, and lure coursing.

Temperament: The Whippet is a very affectionate, devoted companion that has intelligent and can be lively. This breed doesn't work well with harsh or rough training. They are a sensitive dog that needs to be treated gently, but with a set of rules and training given to suit their temperament. Variety is the key to getting the dog trained, with good running games. They are good with children but will not like rough and tumble. This dog is easy to travel with and make good travel companions. This dog is in the hound family and you need to know that this dog will chase cats and kill them. They can be good with cats, they have been raised with. This breed can be used well as a hunting dog. This dog has fantastic sprinting speeds and can turn on a dollar, whilst still in hot pursuit. Their dexterity and speed is highly impressive to see. To gain the best from this breed you need to be a good pack leader and keeping the dog as a dog will avoid small dog syndrome, that can give you behaviour problems.

Health issues: The Whippet is prone to skin problems and upset stomach. This dog is in overall good health. It should be noted that if you have a rescue dog, that has come from the race tracks; they may have joint problems, due to excessive racing.

Grooming: The Whippet is very easy to keep clean and tidy all you have to do is brush over the dog with a damp chamois will add gleam to the coat.

Living conditions: This breed will be fine in an apartment if they have had the long walks they need daily. This dog needs a well fenced garden as they will chase and kill cats and other small animals.

In the United States, Whippets are not as well known as their Greyhound cousins. However, Whippets can make wonderful family pets that are easy to train and incredibly affectionate towards their human families.

Bred from Greyhounds, Italian greyhounds and a number of terrier breeds, the Whippet was originally created as a sporting animal for recreational racing. Unsurprisingly, therefore, there are many similarities to be drawn between the Whippet and the Greyhound.

What Does a Whippet Look Like?

On average, Whippets grow to approximately 20 inches in height, with males typically slightly larger than females. Most adults will weigh between 30 and 40 pounds, making them almost two thirds to half the size of a Greyhound.

A Whippet’s coat can be numerous colors. The most common colors are white, blue, black or brown. In fact, according to the American Kennel Club, in terms of showing a Whippet, the coat color is “immaterial”. However, the AKC does state that a Whippet should be “…an impression of beautifully balanced muscular power and strength, combined with great elegance and grace of outline.” Nevertheless, all Whippets, show standard or not, make excellent pets.

Unlike, the Greyhound, which is often considered to be a ‘hypoallergenic’ breed, the Whippet does shed. Due to its very short coat, this may not be noticeable, but allergy sufferers may feel the adverse effects.

Whippets Are Like Greyhounds

Being bred from Greyhounds, it is unsurprising that Whippets have many of the Greyhound’s character traits. For example, they are incredibly loyal and devoted to their owners. They are typically very gentle, making them suitable for households with children and other animals.

Usually, Whippets are quiet dogs and are not known to bark, which could make them ideal as apartment pets. In addition, the breed is known for its patience, it is very rare to find an aggressive Whippet and this is usually caused by repeated and cruel provocation.

Like Greyhounds, Whippets are not hardy dogs despite their racing roots. Therefore, it is unwise to keep them outside, especially in cold weather. Additionally, due to a distinct lack of body fat, hard surfaces can cause damage to the dog’s joints. Subsequently, plenty of soft bedding is required to ensure his, or her, comfort.

Whippets Are Not Like Greyhounds

Despite the above similarities between Whippets and Greyhounds, there are also a number of differences between the two breeds.

Greyhounds have a reputation for becoming very attached to their owners. However, the Whippet is known for taking this attachment to a new level. If not trained correctly, they will want to sleep with you, share your food and follow you everywhere. Therefore, the breed is ideal for someone who is looking for a companion as well as a pet. However, if your job or other commitments will require you to leave your dog alone for lengthy periods, it is unwise to choose a Whippet, as he, or she, will become very distressed during your absences.

Another difference is in its energy levels. Greyhounds are renowned for their paradoxical laziness. The Whippet, on the other hand, tends to have a lot more energy and will want plenty of exercise and play. That said, they do not have the endurance to run or play for extended periods. In dog terms, the Whippet is still a lazy dog, but in comparison to the Greyhound it requires more physical activity.

If you are interested in Whippets and think that you could offer one a good home, you may like to consider adopting an abandoned dog. There are numerous rescue organizations, which can be found through your local rescue center or the American Whippet Club.
