One is tall and one is long. The Weimaraner is around 27 inches tall and, as H. L. Mencken said  “A dachshund is a half-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long.” These breeds both come from Germany and were originally used for hunting. But the Dachshund was bred for skills specific to badger hunting and, indeed, the name means “Badger Hound.” Its paws are unusually large and paddle-shaped for efficient digging. It has skin that is loose enough not to tear while tunneling in tight burrows to chase prey. The dachshund has a deep chest to allow enough lung capacity to keep going when hunting. Its snout is long with an increased nose area that absorbs odours. The Weimaraner was a general hunter and his finesse in the field has been overshadowed by his elegant looks and trainability in other endeavors.

Both breeds have been seen in movies and books. The Weimaraner was made famous by William Wegman who photographs the Gray Ghosts for ads and books and deftly uses their skills in skits on children’s shows such as Seasame Street. Dachshunds were made famous in the 1966 movie “The Ugly Dachshund” in which they played opposite a Great Dane. As often happens when a specific breed appears on the big screen, there was a rush to buy and adopt Dachshunds. Many owners were surprised when they found that these dogs are not easily trainable, especially in housetraining, and can be somewhat devilish little creatures.

To make up for his training flaws, the Dachshund is extremely “game,” or  ready to work. He will go after his prey with unmitigated enthusiasm and often an owner has to drag him back up from the hole he’s chased his prey down. He is courageous to the point of rashness and lively and clever. The Weimaraner is also considered highly intelligent. He is a very malleable dog but can also be stubborn so training may take some extra time. They, too, can be mischievous and many owners resort to tactics such as putting baby guards on the cabinets to keep them from nosing inside. The Weimaraner of today is much more comfortable in front of a camera than mucking through the woods looking for prey.

The Weimaraner and Dachshund share some similarities. Both are considered too intense for young children, both make good companions in an older household, and both come in the long hair and short hair variety. Dachshunds also come in a wire hair variety and have a smaller cousin called the Miniature Dachshund. Weimaraner owners will attest to their dogs’ need for exercise and a focused Weimaraner is happiest. Dachshund owners will find that their dog doesn’t need a huge amount of activity but they relish a game where they can use their hunting skills.

So, whether you own a Weimaraner or a Dachshund or are considering adopting one, there are a few things to keep in mind. The affectionately called Sausage Dog is lively and mischievous and fun-loving. He makes an excellent apartment dog but needs to be cordoned off or put in a crate when you’re out. The Weimaraner is intelligent, alert and stunning to look at. Like the Dachshund, he requires a lot of people time. And remember not to leave any cabinets with food open and hide your sneakers just in case they look tempting.

The decision to purchase or adopt a Weimaraner puppy is not one to be taken lightly! Weimaraners are notoriously athletic and extremely energetic. They are ideal for people who jog or run regularly, those who have large yards in which to play with and exercise their dogs, or nature-lovers who plan to hike, camp, and explore with their new pet. Weimaraners can keep up with their humans even if they have the most active lifestyle imaginable, but can become very bored and depressed if not properly exercised. Boredom and depression in dogs can lead to many behavioral issues, including aggression and other destructive behaviors. If you do not lead an active lifestyle or do not have plenty of time to devote to a new household companion, the Weimaraner breed is not for you.

The first step in adopting any puppy or dog, Weimaraner or otherwise, is to research the kennel or breeder from which you are going to acquire your new pet. It is a good rule of thumb to avoid pet stores in general, as many pet stores sell dogs that are improperly bred or inbred, and this can result in severe health and temperament problems. If you choose to adopt your Weimaraner from a kennel or shelter, make sure that you are able to handle an adult dog and deal with any behavioral issues that may have developed in previous ownership. Many shelter dogs have been improperly trained, neglected, or even abused, and you will need to do some extra training work with your new friend to efficiently correct these behaviors. If you choose to purchase your new Weimaraner puppy from a breeder, you should do your research exactly as you would in any other large investment. Ask to speak to owners of pups sired by a potential breeder, verify bloodlines to ensure that there has been no inbreeding, and ask for AKC registration. All responsible and reputable breeders will be willing and happy to hand over this information. After all, it is there job to assure that your new pet will be a happy and health addition to your home!

If you are dead-set on having a pet Weimaraner, you should research the breed as much as possible prior to purchasing or adopting your new companion. Weimaraners, as such energetic and intelligent animals, need constant stimulation and lots of physical activity. Fortunately, this makes them ideal for various competitions. From being shown in the ring to taking part in agility, hunting, and obedience trials, Weimaraners excel at competition. The training process for these types of competitions not only provides you with a fantastic boding experience for you and your dog, but it will provide much of the necessary exercise and mental stimulation that Weimaraners so desperately need.

Basic temperament testing when going to look at litter of puppies is always a good idea, as well. Checking for responsiveness, attentiveness, and energy levels is a good indication of the trainability of your future pup. If one puppy repeatedly ignores you while another wants to jump in your lap and play, it will tell you a lot about what kind of dog your new friend will become when he or she grows up! Pay close attention and do extensive research before acquiring any new puppy to ensure that you will have a happy, healthy pet that suits your lifestyle.

Weimaraners make phenomenal hunting companions. Originally bred for the purpose of assisting their human owners in hunting both large and small game, this breed excels on the field and in the woods. The Weimaraner has an impeccable sense of smell and a natural urge to track and hunt, thus making an ideal hunting dog for any hunting enthusiast. Weimaraners are used around the world as champion hunting companions, as they are an intelligent and skilled breed capable of learning and diligently executing the most subtle of commands.

Most hunting dogs excel in one particular area of hunting. Hounds are used for tracking, whether it is by scent or sight or both. Smaller dogs (sometimes known as “ratters”) are used to flush game out of burrows and brush. Larger breeds are used as pointers and retrievers. One of the most amazing aspects of the Weimaraner as a hunter is that it can and will perform all of these tasks – and exceptionally well, at that! Despite the fact that Weimaraners make excellent tracking and flushing dogs as well, they were originally bred to point and retrieve, but this has not stopped them from excelling in other areas of hunting as well.

Weimaraners are a very intelligent breed. Not only are they eager to please their owners on the hunt, they also enjoy it all on their own. The American Kennel Club and most Weimaraner clubs will offer training seminars for hunters and their dogs who are new to the activity. The AKC also offers hunting, retrieving, and obedience trials, the training for which is invaluable once you are actually working in the field with your pup. Many of these trials are non-competitive, instead measuring the efficiency with which your dog performs various tasks instead of pitting him or her against other dog-and-owner teams for a place. The detailed judging in these trials will help you discern what areas you and your dog will need to work on in order to advance training and become more efficient working together on the hunt. Plus, it is a wonderful way to spend time with your dog and solidify both of your skills, commands, and communication.

The most important aspect in training a Weimaraner as a hunting dog is to start as early in life as possible. Going over basic tracking and retrieving exercises when your Weimaraner is still a puppy is a good start. The younger you are able to being working with your dog in the field, the better. Training an adult Weimaraner (or any adult dog, for that matter) to assist on the hunt can be difficult. Old habits are hard to break, and many dogs who do not develop around the hunting environment can become too easily distracted on the field. Many will be gunshy, as well. The early training process can be slow, as puppies have a far shorter attention span in youth as they will in adult life, but beginning at an early age will make your job a lot easier and your hunts a lot more enjoyable in the future.

Description: The Weimaraner is a fairly large, athletic hunting dog. The dog will be found to be 24 to 27 inches at the shoulder and the bitch 22 to 25 inches. The Weimaraner weighs between 50 and 70 pounds, depending on sex. The tail of the Weimaraner is generally docked (as is the practice with many hunting dogs). The coat of the Weimaraner is very distinctive and elegant, being various shades of grey from mouse-grey, charcoal-grey, or silver-grey. The eyes of this dog are widely set and amber in color. There is also a long haired Weimaraner, but it is not recognized in America. The Weimaraner generally lives for 10 to 12 years. It is also called the Grey Ghost or the Weimar Pointer.

History: The Weimaraner is actually a descendent of the Bloodhound. This breed was really developed in the 17th century, but dogs with similar attributes were known in 11th century in France at the court of King Louis IX. The dog eventually made its way to Germany where the breed type was refined and perfected at the Court of Weimar by local noblemen. It developed into a hunter of birds and small game after its original quarry, boar, wolves, and elk became scarce.

Temperament: The Weimaraner is a fearless, protective dog that has been developed not only for its hunting abilities, but for its affection for its human family. The Weimaraner gets along very well with children. For the Weimaraner to be a really valued member of the household, it should be well trained and provided with plenty of exercise. It can be socialized with cats and other dogs in the household, but should probably never be trusted with pet rabbits or hamsters, its prey drive is just too strong.

Health Issues: The Weimaraner, unfortunately, can be subject to bloat. This twisting of the stomach is a life-threatening condition that must be dealt with immediately. Smaller meals and a quiet time after eating can help. This dog can also suffer from hip dysplasia. Von Willebrand’s Disease, a form of hemophilia, is sometimes present in this dog. These last two disorders can be largely eliminated by intelligent breeding. This dog is also subject to tumors.

Grooming: The short coat of the Weimaraner is easy to keep in top form, all that is needed is a twice weekly brushing, and perhaps a ‘polishing’ with a chamois cloth. It is probably best to use a dry shampoo on this dog, to help preserve the natural oils. If the Weimaraner has been hunting in the field, be sure to check for ticks, and for plant seeds between the toes.

Living Conditions: Although the Weimaraner is a keen hunting dog that needs a lot of exercise, it is also a devoted companion dog that needs to be with its human family. This dog will suffer from separation anxiety if left alone. In part, because of its strong bonding to humans, the Weimaraner can live in an apartment, but it must be given sufficient exercise. This dog needs a long walk every day and the chance to experience a free run now and again.

The Weimaraner Vorstehhund, also dubbed as the “grey ghost”, is a product of German selective breeding. It was a breed favored by royalty by German royalty. They are strong gun dogs with great perseverance and courage. They will stop at nothing to please their hunting masters.

They are beautiful dogs with a regal stance that most people appreciate. Weimaraners are relatively large dogs with long muscular limbs. Their coats are short and hard but there are rare types with semi-long coats, and they usually come in silvery and gray colors.

Since they have short coats, grooming maintenance is very low but they can drool and bark excessively. Drooling problems may never be solved but with barking, training and extensive early socializing may minimize the unpleasant behavior.

Weimaraners are originally bred to become large game hunters. Animals like boars, deer, and even bears. But with the decline of large game popularity, they eventually adapted to small game hunting. Because of their original hunting inclinations, they are not intimidated with size and seem brave in all occasions.

They are very athletic and thrive in physical activities. Exercise is essential to Weimaraners. Lack of physical and mental stimulation will make them restless and may cause them to become disorderly inside the house. If often left alone, they will channel their energy to destructive behaviors like chewing furniture and footwear. It is also common for them to steal food from tables and counter tops. Bad habits like this need to be eradicated as quickly as possible.

They are affectionate and loving dogs and also very protective of their owners. They have great guarding instincts and they are likely to be very territorial. Weimaraners can be aloof and hostile to strangers. If they are not socialized extensively as puppies they tend to become very aggressive.

When dealing with Weimaraners, owners must be firm and take the role of the “pack leader”. Weimaraners can be very stubborn and willful. Therefore, owners must train them with effective positive reinforcement methods to counter these behavioral problems. Passive and meek owners will find it difficult to manage Weimaraners. Natural authority must be established over them.

Weimaraners desires companionship. They like to be with the family’s “pack”. They will feel awful if left for their own. Weimaraners are generally affable to children but their pure physicality and highly excitable nature can cause accidents, such as knocking children and elderly people down.

They are highly trainable and intelligent dogs. They must be trained extensively with positive reinforcement. Weimaraners like to be praised and rewarded with treats. Positive reinforcement is the best way to control and train them. Calm behavior training is also essential for these dogs. They will eventually mature, although slow, into a mild-mannered temperament.

Weimaraners are common to gastric torsion, a painful and fatal condition. To prevent this, Weimaraners feedings must be spread at least twice daily. But to be sure, because Weimaraners are seriously susceptible to this condition, have a vet’s contact number ready.

When most people picture a Weimaraner, they picture a large, regal-looking dog with a short, gray coat. This gray is often a muted brown, giving the dog’s color an overall sepia tone, like an old photograph. However, there is another coat color for Weimaraners. This color is also gray, but is richer, darker, and has beautiful undertones of blue. Whereas the standard Weimaraner’s gray coat color is derivative of a brown coat, the Blue Weimaraner’s coat color is a muted black with no brown hues. Blue Weimaraners range from a slate gray to a dark gunmetal color. These dogs are quite beautiful, though somewhat rare.

Many Weimaraner clubs accept this gorgeous coat variation without hesitation. Unfortunately, most large canine registries refuse to recognize the Blue Weimaraner and see its coat color, however attractive, as a flaw. Until the 1970s, this was not always the case. In ‘72, the American Kennel Club altered its regulations for the breed to ban Blue Weimaraners from competing in the ring, however, the American Kennel Club will allow registration of a Blue Weimaraner under certain circumstances. For instance, if both the dog’s sire and dam are AKC registered, he or she can be registered with the AKC as well. The thing is, registration with the AKC doesn’t imply full acceptance. Blue Weimaraners are only allowed to compete in non-breed specific competitions, such as agility trials, obedience trials, and other various competitions that are based on performance instead of appearance.

It is assumed that the Blue Weimaraner is an intentional variation of the genetic breed, as this darker coat coloration has only appeared very, very rarely when not specifically bred for. In fact, there are only two documented cases of Blue Weimaraners being born to a gray sire and gray dam in the twentieth century, the first of which was in Austria in the latter half of the ’40s. A man called Captain Holt was traveling through Germany and was entranced by this different-colored dog. He purchased his new Weimaraner, imported him to the United States, and used him to sire many generations of beautiful Blue Weimaraners. This single dog is considered the primary reason for the expansion of the Weimaraner’s blue coat variation in the United States. Many of the dogs sired by Captain Holt’s Blue Weimaraner were champions of their breed.

Originally, when Captain Holt discovered the Blue Weimaraner, it was assumed that the blue coat gene was recessive. In previous years, studies of the genetics and breeding patterns of the Weimaraner have proved just the opposite. The genes that dictate coat color of a dog are called “alleles”. The Weimaraner breed posses only two of these: blue and gray. Not all blue alleles are passed down from sire or dam to puppy, so it is possible that Weimaraners of blue parents can be born gray. However, if the puppy does inherit the blue allele, its coat color will most definitely be blue.

The Blue Weimaraner is a beautiful and impressive variation of the standard Weimaraner. Many Blue Weimaraner enthusiasts consider it very unfortunate and short-sighted that this fascinating coloration is not recognized by the American Kennel Club and other large dog registries. Fans and breeders of the Blue Weimaraner are fighting to not only ensure the health and longevity of the breed, but to have the AKC recognize the Blue Weimaraner as a valid breed in competition.

The Weimaraner is a dog that needs plenty of exercise and a place to run. Try to avoid running them after a meal as they may develop a life threatening bloat. This breed of dog will do better with three smaller meals a day rather then two or even one large meal. This is a very protective dog and can be a one person or one family dog. They may not be trusted with other pets due to their strong prey instinct. They may fight other canines. They need to be socialized with children and very young children are in danger of being knocked over but this athletic, highly active dog. They have a coat that is very pleasing to the touch. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Weimaraner is 24 to 27 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 55 to 70 pounds. The female ranges from 22 to 25 inches to the withers and 50 to 65 pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Weimaraner is no exception. Be on the look out for bleeding disorders, gastric tension and Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness). This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

*Grooming. The Weimaraner has an easy care sleek, short and smooth coat that feels like heaven to the touch. She should be brushed regularly and rubbed down with a chamois to make her coat shine. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.

*Life Span. The Weimaraner can live between 10 and 12 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
