This is a commissioned painting of the beautiful, energetic Vizsla. These dogs are known for their high energy, defined muscles and trainability. I want to give credit to the owner of this dog who supplied me with a great reference photo to create this painting. I really enjoyed capturing the subtle, orange reflection in the snow just under the dog along with the beauty and grace of this breed.

Controversy still surrounds the concept of hunting with dogs. Many states do not feel that it is a legal practice, and believe that hunters should accomplish the job by themselves. Yet, many sports hunters prefer to be accompanied by these animals for the simple reason that they are better at getting certain game than their human owners!

Hunting with dogs does not imply pulling along just any kind of dog for the hunt--each dog has to undergo rigorous training beforehand. The dog's potential is revealed on the field, and implies the standard of training received.

In fact, breeds like pointers, spaniels and retrievers are natural predators. If this predatory behavior is not kept under control, small pets in the family such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. may be harmed. So also small children.

The predatory instincts found in certain dogs is higher than the rest. So, they are constantly seeking an outlet, stalking some prey or the other. If the hunter decides to purchase this type of dog, enough time and energy must be expended in training it properly. It must be taught to socialize or it will treat everything and everyone as an enemy! Training skills required to channel its behavior in the proper direction go beyond mere "challenging". If the hunter has no time for it, he/she better stay away from hunting dogs!

Those hunters interested in hunting with dogs can take the assistance of the AKC Sporting group. They have a large variety of breeds on hand, specifically those dogs that love sporting in the woods and water areas. The mind boggles at the variety that is available--

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, German Shorthaired Pointer, Vizsla, English Springer Spaniel, American Water Spaniel, Gordon Setter, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, English Setter, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Golden Retriever, Spinone Italiano, English Cocker Spaniel, Brittany, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Curly-Coated Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Field Spaniel, Irish Water Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, Weimaraner, German Wirehaired Pointer, Clumber Spaniel, Sussex Spaniel, Pointer, Flat-Coated Retriever, and Irish Setter!

For herding children or livestock, there is no breed to beat the Border Collie! It is a total workaholic, and so will do everything that the master commands. A hunter will enjoy hunting with dogs of this kind.

Terriers were originally trained for the purpose of bringing down small quarry as well as destroying vermin, but today they are more vicious and allow nothing to stand in their way!

Hunting with dogs like the hound can lead to an exciting experience. Among the many breeds registered with the AKC, the hounds form the largest group. Most of the dogs come with an impressive lineage--pedigreed hunting dogs with wonderful hunting traits. Blessed with a magnificent sense of smell, these dogs start baying as soon as they scent their quarry. Their ability to tirelessly trail the quarry for lengthy periods of time is truly astounding!

The seasoned veteran wishing to go hunting with dogs can choose any of these hounds--Black and Tan Coonhound, Beagles, American Foxhounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Bloodhound, English Foxhound, Basset Hounds and Dachshund.

Choosing a Dog.

Dogs are cute cuddly and make great companions. Before you buy a dog make sure you choose the one that's right for you, your lifestyle and your living space. Evaluate your lifestyle and family circumstances. Do you have small children? Are you active? What are your family hobbies and activities? Does anyone in your family have allergies?

Make a list of the qualities you want or need in a dog. Do you need a lap dog, guard dog, small or toy size or can you and your home accommodate a large dog? Do you want a dog with long fur that sheds and needs special grooming?

No dog is totally non allergic but some cause fewer allergies than others. Typically breeds that do not shed as much or that require frequent bathing are less allergic. Also, small dog breeds because they produce less saliva. Poodles and Poodle mixes are least allergic.

Once you have completed your list, go to the library or the AKC web site and check out information on all the different breeds of dogs until you find one that fits your family.

Purchase your dog from a responsible, ethical breeder who produces high quality, healthy dogs with stable temperament. The AKC has breeder referral contacts for each recognized breed.

Dog Breeds.

There are many breeds of dogs and they mainly fit into these AKC acknowledged groups;

The first is called the Sporting Group. These dogs are active, alert, likeable and make well rounded companions. They do require regular invigorating exercise. They include the Cocker Spaniel, Irish Setter and the Vizsla.

The second group are Hounds. These dogs are mostly used for hunting because of their scenting powers and stamina. Beware though because instead of barking some hounds produce a deep baying sound. Hounds include the Basset Hound, Beagle and Blood Hound.

Third are Working Dogs. They have mostly been bred to guard, pull sleds or rescue. They are quick to learn, intelligent, capable and make solid companions. Their size and strength can make them unsuitable for children. These dogs must be properly trained. They include the Boxer, Great Dane and Rottweiler.

Fourth are Terriers. They are feisty, energetic and range in size from very small to medium sized. Most were bred to hunt. They can have wiry coats that require special grooming. They also require owners with determination to match their lively spirits. This group includes breeds such as the Cairn Terrier and Miniature Schnauzer.

Fifth is the Toy Group. They are diminutive in size but very expressive. They are very popular for people with small living spaces. It is easier to control and care for smaller dogs, though they can have long coats that need special care. They include the Chihuahua, Pug and Pomeranian.

Sixth is the Non Sporting Group. This is a diverse group of sturdy dogs with different personalities, sizes, coats and appearances. It includes breeds such as the Dalmatian, Bull Dog and Chow.

Seventh is the Herding Group. This is the newest class and is composed of dogs that used to belong to the Working Group. They share the ability to control the movement of other animals. They are intelligent, make excellent companions and respond well to training. It includes breeds like the Collie, German Shepherd and Old English Sheep Dog.

My two Vizsla hunting dogs get homemade dog food twice each day. I mix an adjusted amount with good quality dry kibble.

Homemade dog food can be better than some commercial products. We don't realize what's in the food we give our pets. Always inspect the ingredients.

Commercial dog foods can contain preservatives, and are altered by chemical processes that can be unhealthy for dogs. They can also contain processed unknown animal products and fillers that do nothing to contribute to your pet's health.

To avoid your dogs ingesting unknown dog food ingredients, make your own. Control not only the content, but the quality as well.

Reasons To Consider A Homemade Dog Food

Homemade dog food, your hunting dog will love you

* dog has allergies to food
* persistent skin problems
* gastrointestinal upsets including diarrhea or constipation
* competes in sporting events or working stock and needs strength for endurance
* control of quality and freshness
* nothing processed so food retains all the vitamins, antioxidants and enzymes

Observe your dog to see he is getting his required dog food nutrition.

* shiny coat, illustrious feel
* sparkling eyes
* alert, good energy and activity
* maintain weight without getting fat
* stool firm and consistent

An appropriately balanced dog food recipe contains roughly 40% meat, 30% starch and 30% vegetables.

1. Meat: Any type can be included. Organ meat, such as liver, is particularly healthy for dogs. Bones should be removed as they are a choking hazard. Cook the meat - uncooked meat can contain unhealthy bacteria and possibly parasites.

2. Starch: Most forms are okay - cooked pasta, potatoes, and rice are common choices for homemade dog food.

3. Vegetables: Most types can be used. Do not use onions as they can be toxic. Cook the vegetables - raw veggies can pose a choking hazard.

Recipe For Quick Adult Homemade Dog Food

This recipe will feed a 50 pound adult dog for one day. If your dog in smaller or larger then the 50 pounds, adjust the amount of ingredients. You can cook enough for many days, divide accordingly and freeze the rest. This food has No preservatives, so refrigerate the fresh food for 3 days maximum. The human vitamin supplement Theragran-M Advanced and calcium carbonate (example: Tums) can be found in any pharmacy. Always consult with your veterinarian.

* 5 oz. dark meat chicken or turkey beef or fish
* 2 1/8 cups cooked brown rice
* 1 tsp. corn oil
* 1/2 tsp. salt
* 2 pills Theragran-M Advanced (crushed)
* 2100 milligrams calcium carbonate (crushed)

Directions:

1. Cook rice until done.
2. Bake your meat, poultry, or fish choice 325 degrees for 30 minutes.
3. Crush human vitamins and "Tums".
4. Mix all ingredients.

Pay attention to your dog's response to the new dog food recipes you use. There may be items they refuse to eat or have reactions to a particular food. Try something else in their place, such as substitute chicken for turkey or rice for potatoes. Be aware for changes in your dog's behavior, especially things such as excessive scratching. This could indicate an allergy to one of the foods you are using.

Homemade dog food recipes generally cause fewer allergic reactions than commercial brands. Plus, by making dog food recipes at home, you can control the proportion of different ingredients. This can be very important to working and sporting breeds that may require more nutrients for their active lifestyles.

While in the kitchen, why not whip up some dog biscuits. Recipes can be found on the Internet, or try your library. Here is an easy dog biscuit recipe, use it for training or a treat. I have never met a dog who didn't love his cheese!
Any Cheese Biscuits

* 1 cup all purpose flour
* 1 cup whole wheat flour
* 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, or any cheese in the fridge)... dogs Love any type of cheese!
* 2 tbsp. butter
* 3/4 cup milk, lowfat
* grated Parmesan for topping (if you have it on hand)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Mix all flours and cheese together in a food processor (or by hand, mix well).
3. Add softened butter and milk, mix well.
4. Roll out on a surface to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness.
5. Cut into shapes, squares is fine.
6. Place on greased baking surface.
7. Bake for 15 to 29 minutes or until golden brown.
8. Cool and store in refrigerator.

Always check with your Veterinarian before making any changes to your dog's diet. For any type of dog, homemade dog food is a good choice to ensure they live a long, happy, and healthy life.

Our Hungarian Vizsla loves to play! And she loves the water! But she doesn't like to get a face full of sand, so when we throw the stick at the beach at Ocean City State Park in Washington State, she tries to dig around the stick to pick it up. Sometimes she's successful, but more often this results! It's very cute and funny.

We have trained our 2 hunting dogs with numerous dog training techniques. Our Vizslas Abby and Peaches hunt and are competitive in AKC sponsored events. These are the fundamentals with which we teach our dogs.

Flexibility, Consistency, Fairness or Positive attitude are all key to successful dog training.

To train any type of dog, you need a solid foundation. Apply these basics with any dog training method you use.

Remember to trust yourself and your dog while you train. The most important part of successful training is your partnership.

Flexibility - Don't just repeat what has worked in the past with another dog. Each dog is unique. Be prepared to handle each unique training situation.

Consistency - Dogs learn through repetition. If you send mixed signals or do not correct unwanted behavior every time, your dog will not learn.

Positive attitude - Like people, dogs learn best from positive experiences. Focus on rewarding desired behaviors. Avoid working with your dog when you are frustrated or upset.

Fairness - Never correct your dog out of anger. The correction will not help your dog learn. It will only damage your relationship.

Confidence - Trust yourself!! Believe in your ability to train your dog well, and you will be successful in what ever dog training techniques you use.

Know your dog - Giving dog training commands is not enough. You must also read your dog's body language and respond accordingly.

React quickly - When you give immediate praise or correction, your dog can make the connection between the behavior and the consequence. That's how dog training works. But you must be alert so you can respond quickly.

Training notes - Keep track of your progress. Note what works and what doesn't. List the dog training commands he still needs to practice. Having this information handy will be valuable as you continue learning how to train a dog better.

Enjoy training - When you and your dog have fun, training is easier and more effective. Use games and activities to practice commands and skills with your dog. Be creative and try new things so training never gets boring for either of you.

Tools - Your energy and attitude are important in dog training. But your dog training techniques must also include the right tools: leashes, collars, treats, etc. The wrong tools can make good training impossible.

Start slowly - Do not expect your dog to learn "Stay" if he does not know "Sit." Do not expect your hunting dogs to follow commands if they do not know basic obedience. Training is a gradual process. Each step builds on the previous step.

Socialization - Dog training commands are only part of obedience. You also need to socialize your dog. That means he needs positive encounters with new people, animals, and environments regularly starting as a puppy.

Environment - Start with a distraction-free environment. You want the dogs to focus on you. As your dogs improve, train in new environments and with more distractions.

Health - Your dog must be in good health during training. Make sure to feed him a high-quality diet, low in artificial products and fillers.

Breaks - Don't push yourself or your dog too hard during training. Take time for a rest. Sit down together for a drink of water. Play a game of fetch. Go for a swim. Remember to enjoy your dog not just train your dog.

If you are looking for a good family dog, consider one of the hunting breeds. If you already own one you don't need to read this! My husband and son hunt using our Vizsla pointers, Abby and Peaches. The intelligence and loyalty astounds me.. They even achieved couch status in the living room, much to my chagrin.

As an all-round good family dog, the hunting breeds are hard to beat.

The Sporting dog breeds have tremendous popularity as family pets; just think Golden Retriever or Labrador. For the most part, all hunting dogs have similar qualities that fit well with family life:

wonderful loving nature,
great for active families
love outdoor activities
okay with children
energy and endurance
devoted and loyal
good family watch dog

Choose a dog that fits your lifestyle.

The breed is often chosen on impulse, because of its appearance, reputation, or as the current fad, and not for the particular characteristics that will make it a good pet that fits the family's lifestyle and activity level.

Families or individuals who are outdoorsy and active should consider choosing a dog from the sporting group.

Also known as gun dogs, or bird dogs, they have natural hunting abilities, pointing retrieving or both.

As a hunter you have a dog that fits with your sport. My husband hunts upland game , quail, pheasant, so our pointer vizslas fit the bill.

These dogs also fit well with our home life.

Sporting dogs are energetic. They love to run and are better off not being confined.

They are not suited for apartment life! The best scenario is a large fenced-in yard

For physical activity, walking your dog 2 or 3 times a day is just not enough... these dogs love to flat out run!

Sporting dogs can enjoy swimming if they are easily introduced to water as puppies.
Gentle rivers or lakes are good, even the backyard pool works!
Never throw the puppy in.
This could teach him to fear water.
Find a shallow spot for him to get in with your encouragement.
Bring him in and allow to feel his stride swimming.
Don't hold or force him to stay in the waster, as panic will turn to fear of the water.

Labrador Retrievers and Golden retrievers have become one of the most popular family dogs in the sporting group. They are happiest when they are with their people, and are too friendly to be good guard dogs! Labs are gentle with children...

Golden Retrievers are also extremely popular. A well-mannered, charming breed that loves people and other animals, Golden Retrievers are wonderful family dogs that are gentle and patient with children......

English Springer Spaniels are intelligent, cheerful, and playful dogs who love everyone. They have high energy levels which make them a great pet for families with active children. English Springers can cover rough terrain with speed, agility and endurance.......

Weimaraners are proud and aristocratic dogs. Fearless but not overly aggressive, they are protective of their families. Intelligent and eager to please, Weimaraners need lots of attention and respond well to obedience training.....

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are the ideal pets for families who love winter sports. Bred to hunt fowl on the icy New England coast, their thick waterproof coats allow them to tolerate adverse weather conditions. Brave, powerful and assertive, they are excellent watchdogs....

Irish Setters are outgoing dogs with even temperaments. They are great with children and like to play with other dogs. Sweet-natured and playful, Irish Setters love plenty of attention and affection. They are not "stupider" than other breeds as some people believe....

German Shorthair Pointers are intelligent and eager to please but can be stubborn and willful. They are loyal and affectionate with their families but often standoffish to strangers.....

Cocker Spaniels have been popular family pets for decades. Their small size and sweet, cheerful dispositions make them wonderful companions for children....

Many other sporting breeds are quickly gaining popularity as family pets. When choosing a sporting breed be sure you can fulfill the dog's need for the great deal of physical exercise and attention that they need to be happy........

Buy a puppy from a reputable breeder who knows good specimens of the breed they produce. Puppies from pet store "puppy mills" or backyard breeders may not have the gentle, friendly nature that is so characteristic of a well-bred sporting dog.

Sporting dogs are not for everybody, but you don't need to be a hunter to own one!
