I'm asking this because I'm obtaining a dog this summer time and that i wanted a Siberian husky however I discovered the malamute and wondered the variations and commonalities between your two.

The Alaskan malamute is bigger and more furry
Siberians are mainly far more intelligent and smaller. They have smaller coats and howl/yelp more. Malamutes generally are pretty low on the IQ, love people, and actually bark. They are bigger, too.
The Alaskan Malamute was originally bred by an Alaskan tribe known as Mahlemuts or Malemuit for hauling sleds. The dog is the oldest known native Alaskan breed. It has a thick, coarse outer coat, a woolly gray or black and white undercoat, and a bushy tail carried high.
The husky came from Siberia about one hundred years ago. It was used as a sled dog, watchdog, and pet. It is usually smaller than the malamute and has a soft, thick undercoat, and the outercoat is soft, smooth hair having a neater appearance than the shaggy look of the Malamute. The husky is usually gray, black, or tan, and may have numerous markings, particularly about the head. The dog sometimes has one blue and one brown eye, and has a bushy tail that trails when it is working and is held up in a curve when alert.
Both Malamutes and Huskies have a white face and a black forehead but a huskey has the break between white and black in the shape of an up-side-down U (the majority of this break is white) where as a malamutes’ break is a right-side-up U (the majority of this break is black).
Malamute – Larger, heavier, draft horse style dog.
Siberian – Smaller, high strung, endurance race type dog.
Sounds like you have a ton more homework that you need to do before getting a dog. Neither of these dogs do well in homes with inexperienced owners or inactive owners. Read up, meet some excellent breeders and their dogs, always always always rescue or choose RESPONSIBLE breeder, attend Sibe/Malamute events, and enjoy!

Huskys are generally smaller and less furry. In my personal experience, malamutes do better with children than huskys. Malamutes tend to be more laid back. The huskys that I have known tend to be runners and highstrung.
Alaskan Malamute is bigger than Siberian Husky
Alaskan Malamute – 23 to 25 inches at shoulder

hi lisa,
ive got one of each, a male sib huksy at 15mths and he is just great, but oh yes is he highly strung,
keba my sib is very intelligent, can open doors and child gates and needs a lot of attention and exercise, he is a Lady’s dog and is all mine, he is great with people, kids and dogs but will do as he wants most of the time unless im there, he weights 19 kgs at the mo but he has dropped some weight, normally around 22kgs, so im bumping up on his food, he stands at 22, 1/2incs to his shoulders, he hardly ever barks but does chat a lot,
now jade our malamute is the opposite, she is all for the family, loves the kids more, she is 15wkes old but will make about 24ins to her shoulders and about 30-35kgs,
now she is not as smart as kebab, a lil aloof in fact, loves going out and meeting people, very loud and will howl and bark for attention,
keba will share his food but jade can be agressive with it and i have to make sure she dont nick any of the others, ive a english staffy bull aswell,
keba is happy to be in the pack but jade is very much the dominent one and will put the others in place, http://www.allpetsnetwork.com/images/malamute.jpg
this is a malamute, and come in all colours, blue or odd eyes are a no no for mals, and are more thick set,

this is a husky and come in all colours again with any eye colour, huskys are more slender and lighter,
myself perfer the husky, mals can be lazy and very dominent, as to where huskys are more get up and go type, but both are great dogs and will have you laughing all the way home with their antics, both love people and get on great with dogs,
best thing i can say is if you get one of these get them out and exercised if not they get sad and depressed and will lead to a chewed up house and a unhappy dog, making an unhappy owner,
They look very similar but are entirely different dogs. Huskies usually have blue eyes – Malamutes will tend to have brown eyes. Their faces are also slightly different shapes.
Both dogs would need a lot of exercise. I think Malamutes might have a slightly easier temperament, though, from what I’ve read.
Both beautiful dogs.
