Can My Siberian Husky Be Trusted Off Leash?

by Dogs.net on December 7, 2011

My Siberian Husky is 10 weeks old. I have walked him more than twice everyday for the past 5 days and I've started to walk him off-leash today. He had followed me although it was not as perfect. He had troubled with distraction of going into other peoples garden and smelling other people but when he realizes Im still walking he quickly comes to follow me again. Now am I training him right to be an off-leashed dog?

You should go to a big field and teach him to come when called. Also when he is not paying attention walk away and when he follows you give him a treat, not too much or too big because that could make him sit. But just do that and make sure he is strong at coming when called, and a 10 week old puppy is very dependant of humans and can be trusted off leash I think.

Also! please get your dog socialized with other dogs because than you wont have to deal with worrying about him running into other dogs and being scared and stuff.

My older brother trained our pug to walk with out a leash and he was a little distracted at first but soon underssotd. he could walk with out a leash until the day he died.

Its very dangerous for your dog to be off leash around the neighborhood, even if he will come to you. All it takes is one time for him not to come to you, and he could be in danger, or in the future put somebody/ another dog in danger.

Im not saying Im 100% against having a dog off a leash. Actually, I have a 145lb mixed breed dog that we let off leash for portions of our walk. On the busy road we hold his leash, and when a car/human/ dog is approaching we also hold his leash. However, he is 6.5, over weight and heavily sedated.. so he couldnt get away from us if he tried. he just likes to go faster than we can walk in the begining of the walk- but we could easily jog and get him if he ever didnt respond. He is very well behaved though, always has been since 7 weeks old. I also let my german shepherd off leash in my front yard, but Ive worked and worked with her when it wasnt a weekend ( its a touristy town) so that she knows not to leave the yard and always comes when called.
