The shih tzu puppy will eventually understand the concept, and you will be able to choose your shih tzu's toilet area and move on to the next step.

House training when the owner is home
Obviously the more time you can spend with your shih tzu puppy the faster the house training will go. The objective should be to take the shih tzu puppy to the toilet area every time he needs to do his business. In most cases this will be either every 45 minutes, right after each play session, after he first wakes up or right after he eats or drinks. It is important to provide effusive praise for the puppy when he eliminates in the established toilet area.

As the shih tzu puppy becomes more used to using his toilet area, and as he develops improved bladder and bowel control, he will be able to begin spending more and more time outside his den with his owner in the rest of the home. It is important to begin this process by allowing the shih tzu puppy access to one room at a time. It is also important to allow the shih tzu puppy in the extra room only when he can be supervised. When you must leave the room, be sure to put the shih tzu puppy back in his den.

Biting is one of those things that every Shih Tzu puppy seems to do, and every Shih Tzu puppy must be taught not to do. Like many behaviors, such as jumping up on people, biting and nipping can seem cute when the Shih Tzu puppy is small, but much less so as he gets older, larger and stronger.

Left to their own devices, most Shih Tzu puppies learn to control their biting reflex from their mothers and from their littermates. Unfortunately, this type of natural correction often does not occur, since many Shih Tzu puppies are removed from their mothers when they are still quite young. It is therefore up to Shih Tzu puppy's owner to take over this important process.

Socializing the Shih Tzu puppy with other dogs and puppies is one of the best and most effective ways to teach the Shih Tzu puppy the appropriate, and non appropriate way to bite, and to curb the biting response.

Many communities and pet stores sponsor puppy playtime and puppy kindergarten classes, and these classes can be great places for puppies to socialize with each other, and with other humans and animals as well. As the puppies play with each other, they will natural bite and nip each other. When one puppy becomes too rough or bites too hard, the other puppies will quickly respond by correcting it.

The best time for this socialization of the Shih Tzu puppy to occur is when it is still young. It is vital that every dog be properly socialized, since a poorly socialized Shih Tzu, or worse, one that is not socialized at all, can become dangerous and even neurotic. Most experts recommend that Shih Tzu puppies be socialized before they have reached the age of 12 weeks, or three months.

Another reason for socializing the Shih Tzu puppy early is that mothers of young children may be understandably reluctant to allow their young children to play with older or larger dogs. Since socializing the Shih Tzu with other people is just as important as socializing it with other dogs, it is best to do it when the Shih Tzu puppy is still young enough to be non threatening to everyone.

It is important for the Shih Tzu puppy to be exposed to a wide variety of different stimuli during the socialization process. The socialization process should include exposing the Shih Tzu puppy to a wide variety of other animals, including other puppies, adult dogs, cats and other domestic animals. In addition, the Shih Tzu puppy should be introduced to as wide a cross section of people as possible, including young children, older people, men, women and people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

While socialization is very important to providing the Shih Tzu puppy with life lessons and preventing him from biting, it is not the only method of preventing unwanted biting and mouthing. Giving the Shih Tzu puppy appropriate things to play with and bite is another good way to control inappropriate biting. Providing a variety of chew toys, ropes and other things the Shih Tzu puppy can chew is important to preventing boredom, keeping his teeth polished and keeping him from chewing things he should not.

As with any training, it is important to be consistent when teaching the Shih Tzu puppy not to bite. Every member of the family, as well as close friends who may visit, should all be told that the Shih Tzu puppy is to be discouraged from biting. If one person allows the Shih Tzu puppy to chew on them while everyone else does not, the Shih Tzu puppy will quickly become confused, and that can make the training process much more difficult than it has to be.

Everyone who owns a Shih Tzu puppy or Shih Tzu dog will eventually have to deal with and correct less than desirable behaviors on the part of their companion animal. There are a number of behaviors that should be nipped in the bud, including:

Jumping up on people
This is one of those behaviors that many owners inadvertently encourage in their animals, since jumping up, wagging his tail and the like can be adorable in a young Shih Tzu puppy. When that Shih Tzu puppy is older, larger and heavier, however, this jumping up behavior ceases to be cute and begins to become annoying and even dangerous.

A large, heavy dog jumping up on people can be dangerous to young children and even to some adults, since a large, 100 pound plus dog can easily knock down a child or small adult. Since you as the owner are responsible for the behavior of your dog, it is important to nip this problem behavior in the bud. Not to worry your Shih Tzu will never 100 pounds, however, you still need to be cautious and nip this behavior in the bud before it causes you problems.

The best time to do that, of course, is when the Shih Tzu puppy is still small and easy to handle. When the Shih Tzu puppy jumps up on you or someone else, gently place the Shih Tzu puppy's feet back on the floor. When the Shih Tzu dog remains standing there, be sure to praise it extensively.

It is also important to give the Shih Tzu puppy an alternative to jumping up. Shih Tzu puppies jump up on people to express their enthusiasm, so it is important to redirect this energy in a more socially acceptable direction. Try teaching the Shih Tzu puppy to present his paw instead of jumping up.

When teaching the Shih Tzu puppy to not jump up on people, it is important to be consistent. Consistency is important in any training program, and all members of the family must understand that the Shih Tzu puppy is not permitted to jump on them.

Pulling, charging and tugging on the lead
One problem you definitely want to nip in the bud is this one. It is important that the Shih Tzu puppy learn to respect the collar and leash now, when he is still small and light enough to handle. Teaching this lesson to a 3 pound Shih Tzu puppy will be much easier than teaching the same lesson to a 12 pound Shih Tzu dog.

Using a good strong body harness or head collar can be a big help when training a Shih Tzu puppy not to pull, or to retrain a Shih Tzu dog that has already learned to pull on the leash. When first fitting a harness, it is important to allow the Shih Tzu puppy to walk around wearing it, so that he can get used to wearing it.

The first thing your Shih Tzu puppy must learn, and the basis of all subsequent training, is teaching your Shih Tzu to heel. Teaching your Shih Tzu to walk quietly at your side on a loose lead is the basis of all Shih Tzu training, and until your Shih Tzu puppy has mastered this vital skill he will be unable to move onto more advanced training.

When walking with a Shih Tzu puppy on a leash, it is important to always keep slack in the leash. If the Shih Tzu puppy begins to pull on the leash, the handler should quickly change directions. The Shih Tzu puppy will then find itself lagging behind instead of forging ahead. The leash will be loose except for the split second it takes to change directions. It is important for the handler to use a quick tug of the leash, followed by an immediate loosening, when teaching this lesson.

When teaching the Shih Tzu puppy to walk properly, it is important to never allow the Shih Tzu puppy to pull you around, or to forge ahead on the leash. Allowing the Shih Tzu puppy to pull you around will teach him exactly the wrong lesson.

Does your Shih Tzu wiggle and squirm, back off and fight you what seems every bit of the way when you try to groom him or her?

First examine your own technique.  Are you being a little too rough?

It is also true that some Shih Tzu never do get to like or learn to like grooming sessions.  These Shih Tzu will require extra patience and most likely extra work on your part to actually get them groomed.

Some Shih Tzu will try every trick they can think of to hamper your progress.  Some of my Shih Tzu will purposely lay their heads on the table while I “try” to pluck the hair from their ears.

Shih Tzu is quite intelligent.  They can use this intelligence against you when it comes to grooming time.  I think it is a rare Shih Tzu, however, that does not eventually come around and be cooperative.  You have to make them think it is “special time just for them and you.”  Shih Tzu loves anything that seems to be out of the way special treatment just for them.

Tip #1

Be gentle!

Be even gentler in sensitive areas such as the groin, the feet, under the tail, around the eyes.  Even the sweetest and calmest of Shih Tzu will flinch a little in these areas.  Most Shih Tzu allow a groomer to be pretty brisk on the body, and chest, but such enthusiasm in the tender regions can resemble more “torture” than special treatment, and the Shih Tzu will gladly let you know they consider it to be torture!

Since the Shih Tzu is a long haired breed you will be so much better off getting him or her use to grooming as a puppy, the very day you bring your Shih Tzu puppy home should be the first day of grooming as well.

Grooming your Shih Tzu will probably never seem easy, but it can become a very gratifying experience for both the Shih Tzu and its owner.  Show your Shih Tzu you take pride in his appearance.  Most Shih Tzu definitely appreciates this interest, gentleness and attention, which will result in a closer communication and relationship between you and your Shih Tzu.  Not only will your relationship and communication with your Shih Tzu be improved, but the Shih Tzu will certainly look more beautiful with the right kind of care.

Tip #2

Before a bath, put a drop of or two of mineral oil in your Shih Tzu’s eyes to prevent burning from soap suds, although you will always need to use a tearless shampoo for the face and around the eyes, a few drops of mineral oil also says to the Shih Tzu that you are taking extra care of him or her.  Sometimes it is the little things that make the biggest difference when trying to make the grooming sessions as pleasant as possible.

Tip#3

For a successful bath that cleans your Shih Tzu thoroughly, be certain you wet your Shih Tzu’s hair extremely well with warm water first.

Tip #4

Start at the withers of your Shih Tzu with the water hose or device that delivers water to your Shih Tzu for the bath.  Let a little warm water run in the sink around his feet first, and then work from the withers backwards to the end of the tail.  Soak the Shih Tzu’s head the very last.  This technique provides for the Shih Tzu staying warmer and less restless if he gets the feel of the water on his body before having the stream of water directed over his face and eyes.  They sometimes get startled at the point of water reaching their eyes.  It is good, however, to rinse the eyes with a stream of water during the bath.

If you will follow these tips you will have begun to prove to your new Shih Tzu adult or puppy that you are his friend and helper during the grooming process and what you two will be doing together is nothing that will hurt or harm him or her.

House training a Shih Tzu puppy is one of the first, and one of the most important things, that any new Shih Tzu puppy owner must do. It is easy to get frustrated if you do not understand the basics of this important process, so we have put together a few tips to make the process of house training your Shih Tzu puppy a little easier.

It is vital to establish good toilet and hygiene habits in the Shih Tzu puppy when he is young, since the patterns that are established in those first few months can last a lifetime. When you consider that house training issues are the number one reason why dogs are surrendered to animal shelters, it is easy to see why house training is so extremely important.

In most cases, a Shih Tzu puppy will not be completely house trained until he or she is six months of age. That is because Shih Tzu puppies younger than six months often lack the bowel and bladder control that they need in order to be reliably left alone in the home all day.

Shih Tzu puppies younger than six months should be confined to a single, small Shih Tzu puppy proofed room any time the owner is not available to supervise the animal. The entire floor of the room should be covered in newspaper or other similarly absorbent and cheap material. At first the Shih Tzu puppy will go everywhere and anywhere in the room. As the Shih Tzu puppy gets older and begins to display better bladder and bowel control, the amount of paper used is slowly reduced, until the puppy goes only on the established "toilet" papers. This toilet area will form the basis of later house training.

House training the Shih Tzu puppy - what to do:
Provide the Shih Tzu puppy with constant, unrestricted access to the toilet area that has been established.
Take the Shih Tzu puppy to the toilet area every 45 minutes when you are at home.

When you are away from home, or when you cannot supervise the Shih Tzu puppy, it is important to confine the Shih Tzu puppy to a small area that has been puppy proofed and covered with newspaper.

It is important to be sure that the toilet area does not resemble anything in the home, such as carpet or hardwood floor. Once the Shih Tzu puppy is used to eliminating on a particular surface, such as grass or blacktop, he will want to eliminate on that time of surface.

Always provide lots of praise when the Shih Tzu puppy does its business in the established toilet area. The Shih Tzu puppy needs to learn to associate eliminating in the established area with positive things like treats, toys and praise from you.

It is important to keep a set schedule when feeding the Shih Tzu puppy, and to provide ready access to fresh, clean drinking water at all times. Providing a consistent schedule for feeding will help you learn to anticipate your puppy's toilet needs.

Using a crate can help the Shih Tzu puppy to develop much needed self control. Shih Tzu are naturally very clean animals, and they will try their best not to soil their bed area.

And finally, it is vital to employ patience during the house training process. House training can take as long as several months, but it is much easier to house train right the first time than to retrain a problem Shih Tzu.

Do not punish or reprimand the Shih Tzu puppy if it makes a mistake. The Shih Tzu puppy will not understand the reason for the punishment, and he may become nervous and agitated. This could set the training back even further.

The Shih Tzu puppy should not be given the run of the house until he has been thoroughly house trained.

Many shih tzu owners fail to recognize the importance of having a shih tzu that comes when called until there is a problem, such as the collar or leash breaking, or the shih tzu tearing free to chase a person or another animal. These situations can be dangerous for the shih tzu, the owner and other members of the community. In areas where there is a lot of vehicular traffic, the situation could even prove fatal to the dog.

Unfortunately, many well meaning owners sabotage this important part of their shih tzu's training by allowing it to run off leash and unattended. Whether the shih tzu is allowed to run in the park, on the beach, or just play with other shih tzu, this teaches the shih tzu that there are many fun things that do not involve its owner. In fact, from the shih tzu's perspective at least, these fun times are often ruined by the appearance of the owner.

Look at things from the shih tzu's perspective for a moment. You - the shih tzu - are having a ton of fun running on the beach with all your doggy friends, and suddenly here comes this human to take you away from the fun. When you see the shih tzu's point of view it is easy to see how the appearance of the owner, and the leash can be seen as a negative.

This negative perception causes many shih tzu to delay this outcome by refusing to come when they are called. From the shih tzu's point of view, this makes perfect sense, since every minute of delay means another minute of romping on the beach or in the park. In other words, the shih tzu has learned that the most rewarding thing to do is to ignore the calls of its owner. While this may seem like a good idea to the shih tzu, it is definitely not a good thing from the owner's perspective.

For shih tzu who have not yet learned this type of avoidance behavior, it is best to prevent it from happening by supervising the shih tzu at play, and making the time you spend with your shih tzu as much, or more, fun, as the time it spends alone or with other dogs.

For shih tzu that have already learned the value of ignoring their owner, some retraining is definitely in order. It is vital that every shih tzu respond to the "come here" command, for the safety of both humans and dogs alike.

One thing to avoid is following the "come here" command with unpleasant activities. Calling the shih tzu, and then immediately giving him a bath, clipping his nails, taking him to the vet, etc. will quickly teach the shih tzu that coming to the owner has negative consequences. It is best to ask the shih tzu to come and then play with him, feed him, walk him or engage in other fun activities. If you do need to take your shih tzu to the vet, bathe him, etc. be sure to allow some time to pass so the shih tzu does not associate the "come here" command with the bad experience.

It is important to remember that shih tzu are constantly learning, whether a formal training session is in process or not. Your shih tzu is always learning something from you, whether good or bad. It is therefore important to make every interaction with your shih tzu a positive one.

When teaching the shih tzu to come on command, it is vital that the shih tzu be consistently rewarded every single time he does as the owner wants. A reward can be as simple as a pat on the head, a "good boy" or a scratch behind the ears. Of course, treat based rewards are appreciated as well, and many shih tzu are highly food motivated and respond quickly to this type of training. The key is to be consistent. The shih tzu should get some kind of reward, whether it be praise, a toy, or a treat, every time he appears at the owners side when called.

There is nothing more beautiful than a just groomed and well groomed Shih Tzu.  A Shih Tzu is a beautifully-coated dog.  When you take the time to cultivate the Shih Tzu’s thick, luxurious coat it is truly a joy to behold.

Once the Shih Tzu’s coat is ruined or let go almost beyond repair, the Shih Tzu’s coat take endless time and energy to restore to its original beauty.  Therefore, it is wise to take a little time each day to keep your Shih Tzu’s hair in top condition.  This, of course, is especially true if a Shih Tzu is to be presented in the show ring.

Daily grooming is absolutely essential to the well-being of the Shih Tzu as well.  Regardless of whether your Shih Tzu is a show dog or a house pet, the Shih Tzu’s coat requires regular, careful attention.

To make the Shih Tzu grooming routine a bit more simple, first establish grooming as a common practice in the daily routine and decide upon a particular spot for grooming your Shih Tzu each day.  Over time, you will find the Shih Tzu grooming routine to be a very special bonding time for you and your pet companion.

Lighting is important.  You will make the Shih Tzu grooming process easier for yourself if you choose a spot with good lighting. 

Place your grooming table in a spot where you will have the least distractions.  Keep toys, dog biscuits, other dogs or family pets out of sight. 

Let the Shih Tzu know there is work to be done and you intend to do it.  Be firm, yet gentle.   Many Shih Tzu tend to resist first attempts at grooming.  However, if introduced and maintained properly, the grooming routine will become a time the Shih Tzu looks forward to as “special time” spent with you.  And always remember, “Surface grooming” is never enough.  You must decide to groom your Shih Tzu from the skin to the end of the hair if your efforts are to be effective.

Shih Tzu are nervous about their footing, therefore, the grooming table should be steady.  Ribbed rubber matting on the Shih Tzu grooming table is best for the surface and is easy to clean.  I have found just a plain vinyl top card table is steady enough to perform all my Shih Tzu grooming chores.  The vinyl top is easily cleaned and disinfected after use.

Do not overlook the tiny nails of a very young Shih Tzu puppy.  I often dread clipping the nails of tiny, young Shih Tzu puppies.  However, the task must be performed at least once weekly.  The best way to trim the nails of a very young Shih Tzu puppy is to hold the puppy in your lap on its back.  Keep a bottle of Styptic powder or a similar coagulant (powder to stop bleeding) handy in the event that one nail is cut too short and there is bleeding.  Invariably, even as often as I have clipped nails, I will still end up with some bleeding at times.  So don’t feel bad if it happens to you.  Just keep your powder handy, dab it on with a q-tip, hold it tight with pressure for a minute or so and the bleeding will stop quickly.

There is no specific set amount of time recommended for grooming to produce the desired effect.  You will get better over time.  Shih Tzu with very heavy coats will naturally require more time.  Again, remember to allow enough time each day for going over the entire Shih Tzu from the skin out.  What you skip over one time will be twice as hard to remedy by the next Shih Tzu grooming session.  You also risk pulling out twice as much hair when a spot is allowed to get twice as much tangled.  If your desire is the beautiful coat so characteristic to a Shih Tzu, you must never let the coat tangle and twist into knots that result in hair breakage and hair loss.

The correct brush for the Shih Tzu should have pin bristles and the coat should be brushed in layers from the skin out to the very ends of the hair.  If your brush gathers hair on one side only, you are not holding the brush properly.  The Shih Tzu coat should be brushed in the direction in which the coat is to fall.

There is one exception to brushing the Shih Tzu’s coat in the direction in which the coat is to fall.  The one exception is for Shih Tzu puppies.  The method for brushing the coat of a Shih Tzu puppy is “every which way.”  The “every which way” coat brushing of a Shih Tzu puppy actually stimulates the skin and hair cells to encourage growth of the permanent coat.  The legs can be fluffed up as a last minute finishing touch as well.

The hair in the ears of a Shih Tzu will grow long, knot up, mat and eventually interfere with proper functioning of the Shih Tzu's ear canal. Infection of your Shih Tzu's ears can result.

You will need a bottle or can of ear powder easily obtained through pet supply manufacturers. Squirt the powder directly into the ears of your Shih Tzu. The hair will become dry and brittle and is easily plucked out with your fingers. Pluck the hair out of your Shih Tzu's ears with a quick, firm motion until the ears of your Shih Tzu look clean. You can also use a hemostat to pluck the hair out of your Shih Tzu's ears.

Be sure to purchase ear canker powder as it has the additional benefit of helping to control canker and ear mites in your Shih Tzu. Swab your Shih Tzu's ears gently with a cotton swab dipped in mineral oil or rubbing alcohol.

Nail trimming:
Keeping your Shih Tzu's nail trimmed is important. Without regular trimming, your Shih Tzu's nails may grow so long that they actually throw the Shih Tzu off his natural balance and act as a source of irritation. Neglecting to trim your Shih Tzu's nails also detracts from the look of an otherwise well-groomed Shih Tzu.

Nail trimmers and techniques:
Guillotine type nail trimmers are the best to use on your Shih Tzu. Hold the trimmers vertically. Grasp the foot of the Shih Tzu firmly, hold the leg up towards you, carefully trim each nail of your Shih Tzu. It may sometimes be unnecessary to trim the nails on the hind feet of your Shih Tzu as they seem to grow much slower than the fore feet. If dewclaws are present on your Shih Tzu, trim the dewclaws as well. The shorter you keep your Shih Tzu's nail, the better, and frequent trimming will help tighten the feet and improve the dog's balance. Be careful about the "quick." The "quick" is a vein that can be easily observed in most white and light-colored Shih Tzu when the toenails are "white." The "quick" is more difficult to identify in toenails of darker colored Shih Tzu. More often that not, these are black rather than white in the darker colored Shih Tzu.

Nail bleeding:
If the nails of your Shih Tzu bleed after trimming, or if you trim them to close to the "quick," there is no need for alarm. Always have on hand one of the antiseptic coagulants which you can purchase through any pet supply manufacturer for your Shih Tzu. These substances will stop quickly any bleeding. Using a cotton swab dab a little of the powder on the bleeding toenail of your Shih Tzu and hold it with a little pressure for a few seconds. The bleeding should stop quickly.

The best time to trim the nails or clean the ears is before you bath your Shih Tzu so that all traces of blood or powder will be washed away. However, the nails of your Shih Tzu will be softer right after bathing.

Nail grinding:
A finishing touch in trimming nails is the use of a nail grinder for your Shih Tzu. A nail grinder will polish off the rough edges of the Shih Tzu's nails. If the Shih Tzu bends his head during the process, some part of the fringes could get caught in the grinding wheel causing the Shih Tzu considerable pain.

If your Shih Tzu objects strenuously to nail grinding, it is advisable to not force the issue since grinding is mostly for a cosmetic effect.
