Description: The Shiba Inu is a small, muscular dog. The male will be 14 to 16 inches at the shoulder and the female 13 to 15 inches. The weight of this dog will be from 15 to 25 pounds depending on the sex. The Shiba Inu has small, upright ears on a round head. The Shiba Inu has a double coat with a hard outer coat protecting a dense, soft under layer. The coat may be found in black with tan, red, or sesame. All these colors are combined with cream or buff markings. The tail is curled up over the back. The Inu will have a life span of 12 to 15 years. It is also known as the Japanese Small Size Dog and the Shiba Dog.

History: Japan is home to four native dog breeds, of which the Shiba Inu is the smallest. This dog was used in Japan as a hunting dog for small game. It was useful in flushing birds from cover. The word 'Inu' means dog in Japanese, and 'Shiba' means brushwood, so it is thought that the dog might have been named for the type of countryside it would hunt in. The distemper epidemic that struck Japan during World War II almost caused the Shiba Inu to go extinct, but remnant populations were gathered after the war and the breed was rescued.

Temperament: As with most dogs originally used for hunting, the Inu bonds closely with its human family and will want to receive a good deal of attention from them. It is good with children. The Inu has an independent turn of mind, however, and can be difficult to train, although the dog is quite intelligent. While the Shiba will get along with the family cat and other dogs quite well, it has a very strong prey drive and will attack small animals, whether they are pets or not. This dog should be kept on a leash when walked.

Health Issues: Although fairly healthy, the Shiba Inu can develop hip dysplasia and slipped kneecap. The Shiba Inu can suffer from allergies and epilepsy. Cancer can also develop in the Inu, although it is more likely a disease of age than otherwise.

Grooming: It is probably a good idea to brush the Shiba Inu once a day, although two or three times a week will do unless the coat is being blown. This occurs twice a year, and at this time intensive grooming is needed to remove the shed under coat. This dog should not be bathed often as it is naturally clean and bathing will remove the coat's oils. The teeth should be brushed several times a week and the nails kept at a reasonable length.

Living Conditions: Although the thick, protective coat of the Shiba Inu will allow it to live outside in nearly any weather, this dog needs to be near its human friends and will suffer mentally if deprived of their company. The Inu is able to live in an apartment, but will need a walk every day to satisfy its exercise requirements. This dog is playful indoors.

For those of you who may not be all too familiar with dogs and the different breeds that they are classified into, it is important to understand what exactly Shiba Inu puppies are, where they originated, how you can best take care of them and understand their specific breed.

Japan is the origin of Shiba Inu puppies, and these agile dogs are among the seven smallest breeds of dog native to Japan. They look quite similar to Akita puppies, but they tend to be slightly better muscled and are slightly smaller overall.

Shiba Inu puppies, like the adult shiba inus of their same breed, are born with an inherent inclination towards being hunters at heart. These puppies therefore, are usually born with the temperament of a predator and they are likewise born with an intelligence that is highly remarkable.

Due to the inherited traits that Shiba Inu pups have, they must be taught and disciplined by their owners from birth. These pups might be stubborn or hard to train later on, due to the fact they will probably act more like their temperament than their owners if given a way and an opportunity to do it.

As Shiba Inu puppies are vulnerable to many allergic reactions, it s vital for every possessor of this kind of puppy to cautiously adopt the procedures of choosing the finest dog food that will constitute the fittest diet for the breed's particular requirements.

It is felt by the majority of Shiba Inu puppies that when it comes down to the root of the Shiba Inu dog selection, it is primarily valued to seek out healthy balances of nutrients, carbohydrates, protein, and fatty acids. Another thing for owners to consider when selecting food for the Shiba Inu puppies is, that these puppies have a tendency to readily develop allergies. It is best to avoid dog foods containing ingredients that may set off an allergic reaction so there is a lower risk of causing upset or aggravation to the puppies.

Puppies of shiba inu descent are usually most prone to the following conditions or ailments at some point throughout their lives, and it is very important for their owners to guard against them contracting these, even as early as their puppy years: glaucoma, cataracts, luxating patella, and hip dysplasia.

Shiba Inu puppies have an exceptionally thick fleece that is able to maintain them warm even during the coldest period. Hence, their possessors need not be bothered very much about their protection and grooming. Several people think that these sorts of puppies are a fine variety to become acquainted with and grow, since they are good, faithful pets as well as shrewd and capable hunters.

Because the instinct to hunt and chase prey is strong in the Shiba Inu breed, and because it generally takes time to train Shiba Inu puppies from reacting inappropriately to this hunter's instinct, many owners elect to keep their puppies leashed much of the time as an adjunct to general obedience training.

The Shiba Inu is a fearless and bold dog. Originally from Japan, this smaller dog keeps herself clean, almost like a cat. She may not be trustable with other pets and dogs. She does well with older children, especially if socialized when young. She needs plenty of exercise but can live in an apartment with frequent walks. Known as an escape artist, she can tend to roam once free. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male boxer is to inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and to pounds. The female ranges from to inches to the withers and to pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Shiba Inu is no exception. Be on the look out for teeth problems, patella luxation and Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness). This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

*Grooming. The Shiba Inu has a double coat. The inner coat is thick and soft. The outer coat is straight, short and coarse. She should be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats, help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.

*Life Span. The Shiba Inu can live between 13 and 16 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

*History. The Shiba Inu come from Japan where they were used as a hunting dog. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1997.

Please visit our website: www.CrazyDogTraining.com & www.TroubleShooterStudio.com This is a series of video clips showing some of Yuki's tricks. She is a Shiba Inu. We spend a lot of time working with her every day. We've been teaching he some words and phenoms. She greets us at the door with a "Hello", "Redrum" is another. She also demonstrates "Exorcist" where she throws her head around in a circle; and "Stick Em Up" & "Spread Em" where she puts her hands in the air and then goes spread eagle against a wall. We've had so much fun training dogs over the years that Roxanne gone to ABC (Animal Behavior College), and is now a professional dog trainer. www.CrazyDogTraining.com Shiba's tend to be a bit troublesome socially, and they are known to be cat like (they don't like to listen). Originally intended as a temp video to show some friends the popularity of it has made us keep it running and use it for promotional purposes. We thank EVERYONE for all the positive comments. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! James and Roxanne Please visit our website: www.CrazyDogTraining.com & www.TroubleShooterStudio.com
