butter the shiba complains when she cant reach her toy.. grumpy thing isnt she? update nov 08: i know shes chubby in the video. i had for for a few months when i took this video, and she was chubby to begin with. im happy to say she shed some pounds and is at a vet-approved weight now.

The Shiba Inu is a fearless and bold dog. Originally from Japan, this smaller dog keeps herself clean, almost like a cat. She may not be trustable with other pets and dogs. She does well with older children, especially if socialized when young. She needs plenty of exercise but can live in an apartment with frequent walks. Known as an escape artist, she can tend to roam once free. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male boxer is to inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and to pounds. The female ranges from to inches to the withers and to pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Shiba Inu is no exception. Be on the look out for teeth problems, patella luxation and Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness). This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

*Grooming. The Shiba Inu has a double coat. The inner coat is thick and soft. The outer coat is straight, short and coarse. She should be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats, help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.

*Life Span. The Shiba Inu can live between 13 and 16 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

*History. The Shiba Inu come from Japan where they were used as a hunting dog. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1997.

When choosing a dog, it’s important to choose the breed that’s right for you. In order to do that, you need to know the characteristics and temperament of the breed you’re thinking about adopting or purchasing before you do so. The Shiba Inu is just one breed among many from which to choose.

History/Background: The Shiba Inu (pronounced SHEE-ba inu) was brought to Japan from China 2000 years ago. Shiba means “brushwood” and “small,” and inu means “dog.” It is sometimes translated as “little brushwood dog.” It was originally bred to flush birds and hunt small game in the dense undergrowth of Japan’s mountainous terrain but is now primarily a companion dog. It is probably of chow chow and kyushu blood. It is the smallest of the Japanese native breeds. There are more Shibas in Japan than any other breed.

This breed almost became extinct during World War II but is now the most popular breed in Japan and becoming more popular in the United States. It was brought to the United States in 1954 by an armed service family and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1992. The Shiba’s talents include hunting and tracking, watchdog, guarding, agility and performing tricks.

Physical Characteristics: The Shiba Inu is small, compact, muscular, furry and agile and looks like a miniature Akita and may be mistaken for a fox. It has a pointed face, broad forehead and pricked triangular ears. It has small dark eyes, a dark nose and a Spitz-like tail that is thick and strong and curls over the back. It has a plush double coat that most often comes in red or red with a little back overlay or black with tan markings, with white or cream-colored markings on the cheeks and sides of the muzzle, throat, underside and chest. It is 13 to 16 inches in height, and weight is 15 to 25 pounds. Females are slightly smaller than males.

Personality/Temperament: Shibas are alert, lively, confident, fearless, courageous and bold but may be a bit reserved with strangers. They are fast, agile, playful and trainable. They are independent and intelligent. They are loving and kind, loyal and affectionate and are good with children. They do well with other dogs and cats if they are raised with them; however, they should not be trusted around small animals such as rodents and small birds. Shibas are not reliable off leash because of their tendency for strong prey and hunting drive and may chase other animals. Shibas can be aggressive, especially un-neutered males, and must have early obedience training.

Shibas can be a bit stubborn if the owner does not show pack leadership. They bark little and bond closely with their owners. They sometimes make a loud, high-pitched scream, sometimes referred to as a “shiba scream,” when provoked or unhappy and also when very happy or overjoyed.

They are easy to travel with and are easy to housebreak and will often housebreak themselves because of their clean nature. They feel the need to maintain themselves in a clean state, often licking themselves like a cat. They go out of their way to keep their coats clean and will avoid stepping in puddles, mud and dirt.

Possible Health Conditions: This breed is generally hardy and healthy, with few genetic weaknesses, but possible health problems include hip dysplasia, slipped kneecap, glaucoma, cataracts and food allergies, and epilepsy is becoming more common. Life expectancy is about 12 to 15 years.

Exercise/Grooming: The Shiba Inu has tremendous endurance but will adapt to the owner’s circumstances. It requires a daily walk and is very active indoors and will be happier and healthier with regular exercise. This breed of dog can walk for hours. As the Shiba Inu has a clean, coarse, stiff and short-haired coat, grooming is fairly easy and consists of daily brushing with a firm-bristle brush to remove dead hair. Bathing should be done only when absolutely necessary so as not to remove the natural waterproofing of its coat. This breed is a seasonally heavy shedder.

Living Conditions: A Shiba Inu will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. It is moderately active indoors but does best with at least an average-sized yard. The waterproof coat protects this breed in both hot and cold conditions and it may live outside in a secured yard but does not like to be alone outside and would prefer living indoors with its family.

Summary: This breed of dog has few health problems, doesn’t require a lot of exercise, is easy to groom and housebreak, is loyal and affectionate and makes a good companion but can become aggressive if not trained early and requires strong pack leadership. If you are looking for these characteristics and traits in a dog and are able to fulfill its needs, then perhaps a Shiba Inu is the right breed for you.

What are theShiba Inu Secrets?

It still amazes me to this day how many people do not know their Shiba Inu. I’m not saying this to be rude, but like any other dog or pet, one needs to know the temperament of the Shiba Inu breed in order to learn how to train their dog. Certain training that people find online is so generic that they think it applies to all breeds of dogs, which couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ll show you how to handle your Shiba Inu’s temperament and turn your Shiba into the obedient friend you always hoped for.

In general, the Shiba Inu is a very smart dog, however their independent way of thinking often makes them difficult to train in some cases. As an owner, you need to be firm with your Shiba to instill respect for you as the owner early on in their upbringing. This will ensure that your Shiba knows who is boss and that they can’t do what they want to do all the time. This will help break their independent thinking pattern and make them a more obedient dog.

Most Shiba’s cannot usually be left to rome by themselves due to their independent nature and their prey driven instinct. They sometimes fall into their prey driven mode and become distracted and oblivious to their owners voice. The Shiba Inu is usually a leash dog, but with the proper upbringing you may be able to allow your Shiba to rome without a leash.

A great way to get your Shiba to begin listening to you and your voice is “praise”. The Shiba Inu loves to please their owner and nothing rewards the Shiba better than praise for a job well done. Make sure you do this a lot when your Shiba is obedient as it instills a sense of gratification in your Shiba when they do something you tell them to do and are more likely to listen than not, as they want the praise that they will be rewarded with when they do.

As with any training, you must keep it consistent and learn how to become friends with your dog at the same time as becoming its master. This in itself is an art, and you should do research on your dog’s breed before buying and training one.

Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is a strikingly handsome and courageous member of the Non-Sporting Group. With tis beautiful variety of soft colors, this dog is physically compact with adorable short ears, a thick coat of fur, and a muscular body. They have an expression of peace and alertness, always ready for the next adventure.

The temperament of the breed is best described as bold, independent, literally brimming with self-confidence. They are one of the best all-around house dogs to have because they are active and adventurous outside, but once indoors become calm and mild-mannered. The Shiba Inu tends to bark a lot, especially at the presence of intruders, making them excellent watchdogs.

A Brief History Of The Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is one of six native Japanese breeds. In fact, these dogs are said to be the most ancient of them all. They were used to hunt and flush out small game, gaining the nickname “little brushwood dog” in reference to its red coat which blended in with the local brushwood trees.

The precise origin of the Shiba Inu is not known, but we do know that they share common blood with the spitz. The breed may have its roots dating as far back as 300 B.C. as hunting companions throughout Japan. From hunting small game and flushing out birds, these dogs were also used to help hunt wild boar.

At one point there were three variations. They were known as the Sanin Shiba, the Mino Shiba, and Shinshu shiba. All were named after their locality. Unfortunately, they were all but wiped out during World War II, then further numbers lost by distemper during the early 1952.

In order to keep the Shiba Inu from becoming completely extinct various types were interbred. Lighter boned dogs were crossed with heavy boned dogs from the mountain areas. These breeding efforts were a success and the United States saw its first Shiba Inu dog in 1954, gaining AKC recognition in 1993.

Upkeep Requirements For The Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu cannot live a happy lifestyle without plenty of daily exercise. Although they are a small-sized breed, this dog has a never-ending amount of energy to burn. Several long walks on the leash plus laps around the yard each day is ideal. They especially love to chase and hunt small animals.

With a moderate tolerance to heat and a high tolerance to cool temperatures, the Shiba Inu can spend lots of time outdoors, but is not meant to live outside completely. If allowed to access a fenced-in yard during the day be sure to provide warm shelter as well. Grooming requirements for the breed consists of a brushing once or twice weekly.

Health Concerns

The average lifespan of the Shiba Inu is between twelve and fifteen years. The only major health concern that runs common in the breed is patellar luxation. Minor health issues include allergies and cataracts. Rarely seen is PRA, CHD, PPM, and distichiasis. Veterinarians suggest that the Shiba Inu get specifically tested for eye, hip, and knee problems.

History

The Shiba Inu comes from Japan. It goes back to Japan’s Joumon period (10,00-300 B.C.) Its origin has been proved with DNA  analysis. Shiba has two meanings: underbrush and small. These dogs are good at hunting in the underbrush and they are small. They  were used to flush out birds and to hunt for wild boar.

There had been three lineages of the Shiba Inu. But when the second world war ended, this breed was nearly extinct. Thus, the three lines were mated with each other to keep it going. The Cultural Properties Act of 1936 proclaimed this breed as cherished natural stock of Japan. The breed was cataloged in the U.S. in 1954. The original litter known to be born in the U.S. A. was birthed in 1979. The Chow Chow  was recognized by the AKC in 1993.

General Looks

It is a small stoutly built and agile canine. This breed is compact but well muscled. The eyes are set deeply and shaped like triangles. The neck is thick.
