We got a Shetland Sheepdog from a breeder in the UK. She told us that the parents were bred too young, and therefore, our dog is not qualified for The Kennel Club and can't be shown. Is this information correct? Who could I contact to find out for sure?

I’d contact Y!A user Jennifer T about anything Sheltie. Just do a search for her and e-mail her.
I don’t know about the UK, but I do know here in the US, AKC won’t register a litter if it’s mother is too young, I can’t remember the exact age limit. But this is done to help discourage breeding on the first heat.
Thanks for the kind words Floopy, but I am afraid I am not well versed in the Kennel Club of Great Britan’s rules. I am in the US. I vaguely remember a member of my sheltie group, a very kind, knowledgeable gentleman from UK, saying that there was indeed such a rule. I can consult him if ned be. Let me know if you don’t get the answer you need, and I will ask him.

According the the Kennel Club website, a puppy cannot be registered if the mother was under 12 months old at the time of mating.

Q. Are there any restrictions that would prevent me from registering my puppies?
A. Yes, if any of the following apply:
- Breeding and Sale of Dogs Act (seek advice from your local authority)
- The dam has already whelped six litters, or
- The dam has already reached the age of eight years at the date of whelping, or
- The dam was under 12 months of age at the date of mating.
- If either the dam or sire are endorsed with progeny not eligible for registration (i.e. that there is a restriction on file at the Kennel Club that prevents any puppies from being registered). Please refer to your owner certificate if you are unsure, the endorsement will be clearly displayed.
Your dog came from a breeder and the breeder is not forwarding the KC registration, because the parents were too young?
First contact the kennel club and ask for the breeders details; which if the breeder is registered they will provide.
If the breeder isn’t registered then there is a case of fraud as a Shetland Sheepdog without papers might as well be an Alaskan bred cross pitbull basset.
If there is a legal case the Kennel Club will be quick to defend their name and all the further advice you need will be supplied by them.
The breeder was right. Puppies from a dam under 12 months of age cannot be registered. This is to try to prevent people from deliberately breeding from puppies, but accidents do happen. It sounds as if the breeder was being honest with you, many would have made some excuse like not needing KC registration or registered them with a spurious organisation instead. You cannot show your pup at KC licensed shows, but you can show at Companion shows which are exempt from most KC rules.
Hello there! I show shelties in the Uk and Im presuming your in the uk too not us and had pup shipped, right.
So yes basset is right in the uk if your dam is under 12 months of age at time of mating then the KC wont register the litter, now thats not to say that the dam and the sire aren’t registered and had the breeder waited a few months, weeks or days until the dam reached 12 months you may have had a full kc registered pup. couple of q’s , what part of the country are you from? did you buy pup as KC registered-eg did breeder say this at the time and was the pup in the region of £650-750? Also are you looking to show your pup as in exhibit at shows or is it that you are looking to compete in agility and such like?? for agility you can get retro KC registration for ANY breed of dog…even one of my xbreeds has this…this is so that each dog can be identified when they do well… Anyway either message me or write back on here, sheltie showing is really tough in the uk there are some excellent dogs out there. Love to hear more about yours.
