I Have a Shetland Sheepdog Who I Feel Would Like a Companion. What Kind of Dog Should I Get?

by Dogs.net on October 7, 2011

I'd like your dog that's about his size (medium, about 40 lb) and perhaps another herding dog because i already realize how to deal with them and know their intelligence. I had been thinking perhaps a border collie. What is your opinion? Every other suggestions are welcome

Yeah, before I finished reading your question I was thinking Border Collie too! Good-luck! And remember, adopt don’t shop!!

Why not just rescue another Sheltie?

You shouldn’t get another dog for your other dog. You should get one because YOU want one. If your dog is lonely, get more involved with him. Agility, playdates, flyball, etc. Go onto meetup.com to see if there are any playdates you can start attending.

Be sure you can handle it. 2 dogs is 4 times the work and 10 times the pain in the booty. And a Border Collie is going to increase these numbers by 5!

Border Collie
Australian Shepherd
another Shetland Sheepdog

These are all medium herding dogs, any one of which I think you and your Sheltie would enjoy. Do more research on the breeds and see which one would BEST fit you.

Border collies are SUPER smart and hyper, you would need to have lots of time to play, and train w/ him/her. What about a Welsh Corgi? Smart, adorable, herding dog, same-ish size… Or i like the idea of adopting/rescuing another sheltie. Just keep in mind that getting another dog should be a decision you make, not your dog. He may just be wanting more attention. Remember that there may be your perfect pup in a shelter, waiting for you to discover him/her! Good Luck!

A border collie is a lot of energy and if your sheltie isnt a high energy dog problems could develop. What about a corgi or cocker spaniel? Both are pretty low key dogs and would make great companions. Another idea is a basenji. You could browse the local shelter or petfinder.com to see what they have in your size range.

Why not just get another Sheltie?
I used to have two, and they got along very well.

I suggest a West Highland White Terrier. They are not very big, but they think they are. My grandmother bred them all her life and my mom has kept them in our family since I was born. They are very good with all sorts of animals and kids. Though my family has never had this problem when owning a Westie, I do hear that certain ones can be quite yappy. We currently have a Labrador retriever with our male Westie. They get along great, but truthfully, this Westie’s best friend is our cat. They grew up together as puppy and kitten and are truly inseparable. I highly recommend this dog.

Never get a dog for a dog. If you want another dog and have the time and finances to support, care for and train two dogs then I’d probably get another Sheltie, a Corgi (if you want less grooming), or possibly a Border Collie. But only get a BC if you plan to do serious training and work the dog in some way (obedience, rally, agility, or even herding).

hi,

to know what type of dog will suit you, you can use this dog finder match up http://alturl.com/birq
the goal here is to help you figure out what type of dog best suits your personality and lifestyle. The results of the match up will suggest certain breeds.

hope this helps

Another Shetland Sheep Dog .
I have two that are litter mates and they are just wonderful together. Male and female that are spayed and neutered.
They have matched energy and are so great together.
totaly differend personality’s, My female is dominate in some things and my male is dominate in other ways so they balance each other.
