I have a Shetland Sheepdog puppy, and it is growing up healthyly. But, I'm not sure how much he should eat after he grew up. He's the smaller kind of Shetie. I just want to know it first so that he won't get overweight or underweight.

It is difficult to tell you exactly how much to feed. It depends upon the energy level of the dog, how much exercise you provide it and actual size. I doubt you’d need to feed more than 6-8 oz. of dry measured food twice a day. My ridgebacks eat 8 oz. dry twice a day of a very good quality food. They are 70 lb. dogs though. A high strung, high energy dog like most Shelties are will perhaps need more, especially if the food is not as high a quality. A good measure for weight is that the dog should have a waist (it comes in on the sides, and curves up when looking at the dog from the side) and you can feel the ribs if you rub your hand firmly on it’s sides. Here’s a picture of my dogs. You can see they have a waist. Ribs are able to be seen when they run (slightly under the fur which is short compared to your dog’s).

It depends on the type of food you have him on and his weight. You should be able to run your hands over his ribs and feel the rib definition, but not see the definition. This is a good way to judge if your pup is at a healthy weight.
