Use a ratio of 40% meat, 30% carbs, and 30% veggies. The best meats to use are ground turkey, lean ground beef, chicken, lamb, duck etc. For carbs use brown rice, potatos, oats, millet, or barley. For veges use raw carroets, peas, or spinach. Also some liver and eggs are good to add. It would also be beneficial to put a multivitamin for dogs in it.

We stopped buying it after the Melamine incident last year. You know where a bunch of dogs and cats were killed when melamine (a plastic resin) ended up in US pet foods. After that I purchased dog care expert Andrew Lewis’s book “Dog Food Secrets”. That’s when I discovered that melamine was just the tip of the iceberg. I couldn’t believe what the FDA allows Dog Food companies to put in (like euthanized animals) the crap they sell us. Even the so-called “preservative free” brands…which can only say that because a poorly written FDA regulations. The only reason the melamine controversy drew any attention was because the pets died suddenly instead of a slow death like all the persevatives and other junk cause.

We make our own dog food now with some recipes we have (also from the book) which is actually costing us less in the long run and it’s pretty easy to do. If you want your dog to live a long healthly life, I would suggest you do the same. I would also recommend you get Andrew Lewis’s book if you want expert advise on what you can feed your dog.
