The Pug is a stocky but short dog with the males measuring 12 to 15 inches in height and weighing between 14 and 20 pounds, and the female bitch measuring 8 to 12 inches in height with a weight of 13 to 18 pounds. They have a round head which is disproportionately large for their body size with a square shaped muzzle that is blunt and quite short. Their ears can be either button shaped or rose shaped, and are small and thin. The tail curls over their back and is most commonly a double curl, with a short coat that is fine and soft. There can be a variety of colours such as silver black fawn and apricot. Whilst these dogs are small they are surprisingly muscular and strong.

History. The Pug is a very old breed of dog and thought to have originated prior to 400BC. Although there are great discussions, concerning the exact origins it is generally agreed upon, that they originated in Asia. The dogs used to often be kept in monasteries, and have been the favourites of various Royalty. Pugs were first introduced to Europe in the late 18th century by the merchants and crews of the Dutch East India trading company. In the 19th century, they arrived in the United States and were recognized as a breed there in 1885.

Temperament. The Pugs are not yappy dogs but they do make excellent watchdogs, drawing their owners’ attention to anything they detect that is unusual. They are strong of will, but generally amiable and it is rare for them to be aggressive. They are well suited as a family pet and get on well with children; they are also strong enough and sturdy enough to tolerate play with smaller children, which because of their size is not a problem as they are not big enough to knock small children over normally. They are not normally particularly excitable dogs, yet they are rarely boring. They also integrate well with other pets in the household. Because they are muscular and active they tend to like more exercise than other dogs of similar size. It is very important to assert yourself as the master of your pet, otherwise the dog may feel that they are in control, which can cause them to be destructive, a dog that feels they are in control of a household is rarely as happy as the dog who realises their correct place in the hierarchy.

Health issues. Pugs can catch a cold quite easily and do not tolerate particularly hot or cold weather. Due to their short muzzle, they have a greater tendency towards breathing problems. It is also prone to ailments of the skin and, a condition known as pug dog encephalitis, which is a brain based infection. It is common for the females when giving birth to require a Caesarean section, due in no small part to the size of baby’s head. They can also suffer some eye conditions, and it is important not to over feed a pug as they will eat more than they require which will lead to obesity.

Grooming. Because of their predisposition to skin problems it is advisable to only brush them when necessary; this is of course also true for bathing. After a Bath, you have to dry the dog as thoroughly as possible. The exception to this rule are the creases around the dogs face, these must be cleaned regularly and quite frequently. As a breed they shed quite heavily but this is only seasonal, and more grooming may be required at that time.

Living conditions. The Pug is well suited to living in an apartment but does require a reasonable amount of exercise. When out walking you need the dog to walk beside or behind you as they tend to see the person leading as the person in command. These are a determined breed, and you need to assert yourself as their master.

Just like most pure breeds, the Pug dog breed is susceptible to some health issues. While most of these are easy to correct and not life threatening, there is one condition called Pug Dog Encephalitis that can be deadly.

Pug Dog Encephalitis or PDE is a condition that causes inflammation of the brain. This can cause your Pug to walk funny, seem lethargical and have seizures. Unfortunatley, there is no cure for this condition and it is often fatal. PDE can progress rapidly or slowly and for the slower progressions, there is medication that can help control seizures and give your Pug quality of life.

While PDE can be devastating for Pugs and their owners, please bear in mind that only a small percentage of Pugs will be affected by this condition.

Luckily, not all health issues that affect the Pug dog breed are as devastating as PDE. Here are some of the more common problems you might see in your pet Pug:

Luxating Patella – Sometimes called “trick knee” this is a small bone that gets dislocated in the knee. Sometimes it goes back in on it’s own, or your vet can pop it back in. In severe cases, surgery can correct it but in most cases the Pug lives fine without any surgery.

Elongated Soft Palette – As with most dogs that have a short snout, one problem of the Pug dog breed is called Elongated Soft Palette. The soft palette is a flap of skin that closes off the airway during eating. When it is elongated, it can affect breathing and if you notice your Pug gasping for air, honking or snoring then this could be the cause. This can be treated surgically.

Dry Eye – Dry Eye Syndrome or Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca is a bit more serious and can cause blindness in your Pug. It is caused by an in crease in tear production and the first signs are a lot of mucus discharge from the eye and conjunctivitis or inflammation around the eye. If you notice this in your Pug, take him to the vet as this condition can be treated with drugs and surgery.

Tracheal Collapse – Common in many small breeds, tracheal collapse is caused by a softening of the cartilage in the trachea. This narrows your dogs windpipe and you might notice gagging or honking. If you do notice these symptoms in your pet, get him to the vet as this problem is very serious but can be treated with therapy and if very severe with surgery.

Just like any other breed, the Pug dog breed has it’s share of common health problems. However, for the most part, they are a healthy breed and make a wonderful and fun companion for any family.

Possibly the most endearing and expressive face found on any breed of dog can be seen on pug dogs. With its almost impossibly large dark eyes and a button for its nose, the pug’s mug seems to simultaneously express that it has the weight of the world on its shoulders and an overarching desire to be loved.

Today’s pug can be traced back nearly 1000 years to China. In China, the people wrote descriptions of the dog referring to it as the one with short legs and a short head. The pug did not reach Europe until the early 1500’s when China started trading with nations like Spain and England. Once it found its way to Europe, however, it became a very popular breed especially among the nobles.

An adult pug typically weighs between 14 and 18 pounds. Its most known feature is its wrinkly little face. They also have easily identifiable tails- a high, tight curled loop, like a piglet, and often a double loop. Pugs come in either black or the more common color fawn. Lifespan is generally 12-15 years.

The phrase “personality is everything” can certainly apply to a little pug. They are playful and love attention. Pugs are also very affectionate towards their owners. Their nature is such that they are not only charming creatures but also give off an aura of dignity.

If you are considering adopting a pug, you should know a few things about the breed. Though they have short hair, they do shed a lot seasonally. Its small size and sweet nature make them inadequate guard dogs. They are very sensitive to heat and thus should not be kept outside in hot weather nor exercised too heavily. The construction of the pugs’ faces makes them prone to snoring and snorting.

Because pugs have such short legs and their faces are not elongated like most dogs, pugs are prone to health issues. Leg-related problems include patellar luxation (knee dislocation) and hip dysplasia. Facial issues that can arise consist of corneal ulcers, encephalitis, elongated soft palette, and pinched nostrils.

The phrase “multum in parvo” is Latin for “much in little.” This is a brilliant way to describe pug dogs. A pug will bring lots of love and laughter into your home and give a lifetime of loyal companionship.

Pugs are cute and comical, a great pet for any family but if you are thinking about adopting one, there is some Pug information that you need to be aware of.

Before adopting any pet, you need to make sure that you can provide for the comfort and safety of the pet. Pugs are not outdoor dogs, so you must be prepared to keep the pug indoors which means setting up a proper sleeping area for your new furry friend.

Also, if you are not home during the day, you will need to think about where you will keep the Pug when you are at work. Will you use a crate or let him roam free? Decide this beforehand so you can be ready with the appropriate supplies.

Pugs are sociable animals which make them good family pets, but this also means that you will need to dedicate time to spend with your pug. You can’t leave your pug alone for extended lengths of time or you may find that he gets up to quite a bit of mischief.

Pug dog information pertaining to exercise is encouraging since they don’t really require much. In fact, a lot of Pugs are actually quite lazy and you will probably have to do a bit of work to encourage him to go out for a walk. Be that as it may, walks are a vital part of any dogs day so you should plan for at least 20 minutes of walk time each day.

When it comes to grooming, your Pug does have some special needs. One of the most interesting features of the Pug is his wrinkly facial skin, but these same wrinkles can actually be a health hazard for your pug because they can harbor dirt and germs. Just like any other dog, you will need to trim your Pugs nails, keep his ears clean and brush his teeth.

When it comes to feeding a Pug, one need to practice restraint. This is because the Pug can tend to overeat and will easily gain weight. Excess weight on any dog and on Pugs in particular can cause a variety of health issues so in order to keep your Pug healthy, make sure you only feed him good quality food and don’t over do it!

Of course no Pug dog information discussion would be complete without stating that your Pug should have regular Veterinarian visits and that you should bring your dog in should you notice any change in behavior.

Pugs are wonderful companions and can live 15 years or more provided they get the proper care and nutrition.

Jessica Alba has two pug dogs. One named Nancy (after her character in Sin City 2005) and the other Sid. Sid is said to be referring to Sid and Nancy, the Sex Pistols duo.

Its know wonder Jessica loves her pugs, they are intriguing little guys. The pug is one of the oldest breeds of dog. Their are 3 theories regarding pug ancestry.
1. Some believe they are a smaller version of the French Mastiff.
2. Others believe it is a shorthaired Pekingese or another Oriental breed.
3. And the last theory is an offspring of a small bulldog.

One thing all researchers do agree on is that it originated in 400BC somewhere in Asia. The name Pug comes from the Latin word “pugnus” which means fist. Because the pugs head looks like a clenched fist. Another theory is that the name comes from the pug monkeys that resembled the little dog.

I wonder if Jessica Alba knows her little darlings were almost classified as an edible dog during the Shang Dynasty 1751 BC. Thank goodness they became classified as hunters instead. Most people who have pugs now, wouldn’t consider them a hunter. I think they would rather sit on the couch with the remote control all day if we would let them.

One of the most famous pugs is the pug that became the official dog of the House of Orange. It has been said that a pug saved Prince William’s life. The dog began barking and woke Prince William up. The pug alerted him of approaching Spanish soldiers.

Pugs have on of those faces that you just have to love. He has fine smooth short glossy hair. He has “rose ears” and very large black eyes, a short thick body, with a high set tail, that curls over his back. His colors are silver, apricot, black, or fawn with the black mask and ears and black trace along his back. The average height is about 10-11 inches and they should weigh only 14-18lbs. My, my I have seen some big pugs. I’ll have to tell my sister her pug should not weigh 30lbs. Also, the cute little wrinkle above there nose is suppose to resemble the symbol for Prince in China.

Their are many reasons to love a pug, I am sure Jessica loves hers for many reasons. But they are happy and intelligent little guys. He is great with children and requires only modest exercise. (This must because he had servants early on in his ancestry.) A daily walk will do. If you are looking for an exercise buddy, this guy is not for you, especially on a hot day. Pugs do not like heat, and can become overheated fairly easy.

Daily brushing is a good idea, as the pug does shed. Also, a quick wipe down of the little wrinkle above his nose with a washcloth with soap and water. This area collects dirt and stays moist. The moistness can cause health problems if not cleaned once or twice a week. One tip for the pug owners is to rub down his coat with a silk handkerchief and it will make his coat very shiny.

To Jessica, for loving her 2 little pugs, now we know why. The pug is an affectionate, loyal little lap dog. He is a great companion, and with that clown like face, he will make you smile each day. He is smart, easily trainable and loves kids.

Pug health requires that you brush their coat at least once a week and a bath whenever they require it. The Pug dog will shed a lot, so by brushing often you can help reduce the amount of fur that coats your furniture, car and clothes. There isn’t much that goes into the daily care of a Pug, but you need to pay special attention to the wrinkles on a Pugs face.

Pugs are naturally curious and as a result stick their nose into a lot of things. This means the wrinkles easily become full of dirt and require regular cleaning. There is also the chance of moisture building up in the wrinkles, which can cause itching, irritation and occasionally a bad infection. But cleaning the wrinkles isn’t that difficult, you just need a soft tissue and make sure you clean the wrinkles on a regular basis to keep the buildup down.

As with all dog breeds you want to make sure you regularly trim your Pugs nails. Pug health depends on the trimming since nails that are too long can become caught in blankets or other things. Longer nails also cause pain for your Pug when walking. Even if you don’t want to trim your dog’s nails there are plenty of vet and grooming places that could do it for you. Keep an eye on the nails and don’t let them get too long since they will grow very fast.

Pugs are different from other breeds in the sense that they do like water. So when bathing the only real difficult part is to avoid getting water in the ears, which can lead to ear infections and don’t get shampoo in the sensitive eyes. If your Pug really enjoys water and wants to play then take the time to play with them while they are in the bath to make bathing an enjoyable event for both you and your Pug.

Keeping the ears dry and clean is another important part of caring for Pug health. Pugs are prone to ear infections due to their narrow ear canal. When you clean the ears regularly you should always use soft tissues or a cotton ball and never a cotton swab. If your Pug is shaking it’s head a lot or scratching their ears then you should take them to the vet to have their ears checked. If there is a weird smell in the ears then you will also want to seek medical attention since this can be a sign of a fungus or ear infection.

Owners will often have a bottle or two of old ear drops around the house since Pugs get ear infections so often. Although you don’t want to use these since it can make the infection worse. It is best to use them only under the approval of a licensed veterinarian and only if you have cleaned the bottle very well and stored it in the refrigerator.

The Dutch smuggled some Pugs to Europe when they visited China for trading and they became popular in Europe as well. Coincidentally, they were also popular pets with the nobility in Europe, just like in China. Pugs today are sometimes used as hearing aid dogs and therapy dogs, but are usually just good companions to their owners.

Pugs are characterized by their flat, wrinkled face and curled tail. Their small body comes in four colors: black, gray, apricot, or fawn with black ears and face. The most common pug color is fawn, with apricot being the most rare. Pugs are usually about 10 or 11 inches tall and weigh from 14 to 18 pounds.

Due to their short noses and wrinkly faces, Pugs can develop breathing problems and get skin infections if their face is not kept clean. Since they have no skeletal brow, Pugs must be careful as their corneas can be punctured. Pugs also are prone to skin allergies, which should be treated immediately. Their wrinkly face may also lead to mouth and tooth issues.

Owners must make sure Pugs’ diets are healthy and that they get plenty of exercise as they are prone to overeating. Pugs tend to not be able to swim so owners should be careful when they around pools. 1% of Pugs also suffer from Pug Dog Encephalitis, which is a chronic form of granulomatous meningoencephalitis. It is believed to be hereditary, but unfortunately there is no cure or known cause for it. A Pug’s life span is from 10 to 13 years, though if they are taken care of they can live up to 18 or so.

Pugs get along with other pets and love attention. They make great pets as they are good with children and guests, are playful and devoted and make good guard dogs.
