We just got a one year old cat but our 10 year old much loved miniature poodle won't let it near us. What can we do?

The cat and the poodle just havent warmed up to eachother yet. give it time and then the poodle will understand the cat is there and there is nothing he/her can do to change that. The poodle will get used to it.
The reason why your poodle is acting like this is because its a fight for attention. He/her doesnt want you to give attention to the cat. Give the poodle lots of attention and as well as the cat.
when you have both animals in a room and u try 2 pet the cat if the dog goes after it just yell no kitty and lightly tap the dog on its bottom after yelling this if it immediately backs away from the cat give the dog a treat
ok…..
1. keep them seperate
2. take 2 wash clothes and wipe down each pet then rub the opposite one to each of their faces see their reaction
3. let them meet
4. it may take some time for them to adjust but im sure it will be fine ive been in that same situation
they need time to warm up to eachother. try putting one in a cage or room where they can look at eachother without getting physical or anything. they will be buds in no time!
(the poodle might need to show it who’s boss though)
we introduce a new animal to our very jealous black lab by wrapping the cat in a towel and sitting with the dog. when the dog does not show any signs of aggression or barking, we praise him like crazy. we will do this for a few minutes 2-3 times per day for about a week. after each session, the dog gets a treat. don’t end any session on a bad note. if you are having a rough session, just be patient enough to praise the dog at least once for being quiet. after about a week, the dog will start to be much more comfortable with the cats presence. we reinforce this a few times a month just to make sure sam does not forget. we have even used this technique successfully with a rabbit.
