Pomeranian dogs are a very sweet and endearing breed that are relatively easy to care for, but as is the case with all dogs, they do require a lot of care and attention if they are to thrive and do well. Dogs are a lifetime commitment and you shouldn't consider getting one unless you are prepared to fulfill all its needs.
Pomeranians belong to the toy dog breed and have recently become very popular and are even considered a status symbol by some. Barbara Cartland the famous romantic author had one and many rich and famous people own these little dogs. Pomeranians have starred in many movies and their cute miniature lion-like appearance makes them very sought after. Pomeranians are small dogs with thick fur around the neck region that makes them look like little lions.
Pomeranians have sweet, gentle personalities and love to be pampered and carried around by their owners. Their small size makes them the quintessential lap dog. Another advantage of this breed is that their bark is barely audible due to their tiny size. Pomeranians resemble little toy teddy bears or toy lions and this makes them very endearing in appearance.
Even their fur is doll-like and fine and they rarely develop a doggie odor. Pomeranians are a delight to own with their sable-like hair and quirky personalities. As beautiful as their hair is, it can become a bother on certain occasions. They do require a regular amount of grooming and they can dirty themselves when defecating, especially if the dog has diarrhea.
Being highly intelligent dogs, a Pomeranian will do everything in his power to hide his "accident" from you. He may drag his behind on the lawn or carpet, anything to hide evidence of the "Crime". This is why it's a good idea to keep your Pomeranian's fur trimmed around his private parts. Some people prefer not to do this so as not to spoil the dog's natural beauty, but with these accidents bound to happen more often than not, you may decide cleanliness is more desirable than attractiveness.
Some Pomeranian owners claim that these dogs love being carried around and placed on the lap as they are essentially lap dogs, but dogs are individuals and some dogs enjoy certain things while others don't so you will have to find out what your Pomeranian prefers. Although they are frequently shown in movies to be carried around most of the time, they are dogs, and like all dogs, they generally prefer a good run or romp at the dog park to being carried around incessantly.
As with many toy breeds, these dogs require gentle but firm handling. They can become a bit bossy if given their way and you should always show them who is boss. They need leadership and once they view you as their pack leader they make loving, loyal companions. Don't let your little Pomeranian's cute looks let him get away with murder!
Pomeranians love being the center of attention and they give off an air of superiority and beauty. Being a toy breed, their antics are often very entertaining and fun to watch. Being very intelligent, you can easily housetrain these dogs and all you need to do if you want to housetrain your Pomeranian pup is to teach it to use a newspaper every time it needs to go. If your pup starts sniffing around and going around in circles, place a newspaper beneath it and it will soon understand what is required of it. Dogs quickly learn to use a newspaper when nature calls, and because of their small size, cleaning up after a Pomeranian is quite easy, except when they soil themselves!
If your Pomeranian soils himself you should wash his behind but make sure you use warm water so as not to give your dog a chill. Try to make the experience as pleasant as possible for your dog or you will soon discover he will learn to hide from you when he soils himself! These are very smart dogs!
Pomeranians are excellent escape artists and they can run very fast as well so be very careful to ensure your dog can't squeeze through the fence if you have a backyard. Because they are so small they can easily escape through small openings and their tiny size can result in them not being seen by drivers and they can easily get run over. Their inquisitive nature can also get them into a lot of trouble so always do whatever you can to make sure your pet is safe.
Pomeranians need regular grooming to avoid their coat getting tangled. This breed is also a constant shedder and isn't a good choice if you or anyone in your household has pet allergies. They shed their downy undercoat twice a year and require daily brushing. Make sure you also clean your dog's eyes and ears regularly as part of your grooming program.
You should bathe your Pomeranian when needed and dry him thoroughly. It is recommended to use a blow dryer on these dogs to make sure they are completely dry as moist fur can cause hot spots and inflammations. Dry shampoo is a good alternative especially if you're in a hurry or the weather is very cold. Once you've dried your dog, applying a little baby powder and brushing the dog will make his fur shine and smell divine.
Pomeranians don't need a special diet but they can be picky eaters! As the breed is prone to dental problems make sure you offer your dog crunchy food and chews, but never feed chicken bones as they can splinter and kill your dog.
Pomeranians are great pets for apartment dwelling people. Because of their small and manageable size they also make ideal pets for seniors. Before getting a Pomeranian or any dog for that matter, please make sure you have the time and means to care for it for the rest of its life.
