The Papillon continues to be among the less popular breeds in North America. Papillon production in the United States has increased in recent years. A Papillon, Ch. Loteki Supernatural Being, won Best in Show in 1999 at the Westminster Kennel Club show. He also won many hearts. Kirby, who won the most in breed history also won the World Dog Show in Helsinki Finland, and the Royal Invitational in Canada in 1998, which has also attracted many new admirers of the Papillon.

As for the Papillon’s ability as a service dog, yes most definitely, the Papillon dog can be well-suited for service work. The Papillon has been bred for centuries as a companion dog and possesses one of the most important assets of a good service dog. The Papillon is the French word for butterfly, the breed owes its name to its large ears which when looked at from the front resemble the wings of a butterfly. They are a small dog with an intelligent look about them. There are commonly white with areas of different colours, although light brown, tan, is unusual. As a small dog they can grow to approximately, 8-11 inches and weigh between 7 and 10 pounds. Even though they have a fairly abundant coat, it is very easy to maintain.

History. The Papillon is a very old breed of dog, which was first seen in Europe in the 13th century, although at that time it was known as the dwarf Spaniel. Evidence of this breeds existence can be seen in some 13th century paintings, mostly Italian during the Renaissance period. The appearance of the breed has changed little since these times. In the past they have also been known as the squirrel Spaniel, this was pursuant to the long fringe on the dog’s tail. They were first recognized, in America, as a breed in 1915.

Temperament. Papillon is a playful dog and can be quite entertaining; they are lively and enjoy playing out of doors. They are intelligent and friendly dogs, which makes them fairly easy to train, and they do enjoy having cuddles and being made a fuss of. They do not tend to yap and socialise well with other pets in the house, this includes cats. They are a proud and patient dog, although they do have a bit of a stubborn streak, which means the dog must know that you are in control. Health issues. Generally speaking Papillon is a healthy relatively long living breed with a lifespan of 12 to 16 years. There are, however, a few common problems one of which is with the kneecaps, but this is fairly common in most Toy dog breeds. Another condition fairly common to the breed is teeth and gum disorders. They can also suffer from progressive retinal atrophy, which once diagnosed will require treatment from your vet. Neuroaxonal dystrophy disease has recently also been noticed in the Papillon breed, but this is a fairly new and far from common.

Grooming. For your dog to remain clean, tidy, and un-matted, it is a good idea to brush them or combed them daily. As they are a long haired breed tangles and knots in the hair can be common, but with adequate combing this should not be a problem. Again for health and hygiene reasons you should bath your dog or use a dry shampoo, as required. Papillons are generally clean dogs and have no particular odour.

Living conditions. They are quite happy to live in towns, cities, or rural locations. However, it should be noted that they are a particularly protective dog this can cause problems if you live in an apartment, as the Papillon will have a tendency to bark when he hears noises, such as people walking in the corridors or passed your apartment. As a sociable dog they enjoy being with people as much as possible and will probably sit on or near their owner whenever possible.

The Papillon is classified in the Toy Group in the A.K.C. Groups. The breed historically has some Terrier and Spaniel in the background, consequently it has an independent and industrious nature and makes a good ratter, whereas many dogs of the Toy Group were bred to be lap dogs and nothing more. Spain contributed much to the beginnings of the breed but eventually it gained in popularity in France. In fact, the Papillon was a favorite of Marie Antoinette and is pictured in many of the royal portraits of the ladies of that day.

Originally this little dog was called the “dwarf spaniel” but gradually the name changed to Papillon. This is a French word meaning “butterfly” and denotes the erect ear of the breed, with the long hairs flying off the ear when the dog is moving, the whole picture is that of a butterfly in the wind. The Papillon can also be found with drop ears, this variety is treated as a separate breed in the show rings of Europe and is called the Phalene.

They are naturally clean and the coat is easy to brush. The long silky hairs lie flat along the sides of the dog, there is a lot of long fringing at the ears, which give the dog its name, there is also a large “ruff” on the chest.

The entire picture of the Papillon is one of balance, being neither too long of leg nor too cobby in body, they appear delicate and graceful and make a lovely sight when moving. The standard requires that they not be over 11 inches tall. Color standards require that they must always be parti-color or white with patches of color and if there is color on the head a mask which extends over the ears is preferred.

The Papillon is considered to be a quiet and dignified little dog. However when there are a group of them, they never quit “talking” amongst themselves or when company comes calling and they can be very noisy. They are delightful household pets and also good watchdogs because of the uproar they will set up when strangers arrive.

Energetic and agile, they have become popular as Obedience dogs and Agility dogs and they also excel in the sport of Flyball. Of course they are always popular in the conformation classes. Their size makes them adaptable as Therapy dogs, as they can sit on the laps of the elderly or disabled.

When Papillons are puppies they can be delicate of bone and it is important that if children play with them they are taught to play with them carefully. A tiny dog such as this is can be badly injured if dropped or allowed to jump from too great a height. Appearance

The coat is long, fine, silky and requires regular brushing. The Papillon does not have an undercoat. The coat falls flat on the back and sides with a profuse frill on the chest. It is short and close on the skull, muzzle and front legs. The rear of the forelegs, tail and thighs are covered with long hair. The Papillon’s coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing. You will need a plastic pin brush or bristle brush and comb. You can use a special whitening shampoo to make the coat shine.

This dog is only an average shedder and the long silky coat does not become easily tangled.

The breed of Papillons is well known for being engaging, charming, noble and pleasant, which has accounted for its popularity in its home country of France, particularly among royals and celebrities.

A Papillon is perhaps most noted for its appearance in portraits alongside royalty and wealthy families in France, as early as the 15th century. Prior to the discovery of these French paintings by such artists as Mignard, Gragonard, Watteau and Cowes, toy spaniels that close resembles the present day Papillons were first witness in paintings by Italian artist Tiziano Vicelli. The best known of these being the “Venus of Urbino.” A portrait of King Louis XIV can also be seen with a Papillon, and is also famous.

One of the most popular examples of a noted royal keeping a Papillon is Marie Antoinette, her dog was called Thisbe. Fortunately, her dog was spared the blade and taken care of in a building called, “The Papillon House,” which is still standing today and goes by the same name.

Another royal who loved Papillons was King Henry II, who it is said spent an unbelievable amount of money on the care of his dogs.

It is interesting to note that while the term “Papillon,” is the French word for butterfly, the dogs are not actually known by that name in France. In France and other countries, they do not use English as a primary language,so the breed is known as the Epagneul Nain Continental or ENC.

Because Canada contains a large percentage of French natives and ancestry, it is not surprising to note that Papillons are quite popular there as well, especially in French Qubec.
