Animal therapy is a major component of the holistic approach to people living with disabilities, in long term care facilities, etc. In this slide show, I combine that with art therapy. Because they have delightful personalities, over sized ears and a light, fluffy coat, a Papillon is one of the most distinctive of all dog breeds. The breed takes its name, "Papillon," from the French word meaning "butterfly." However, their appearance is not the only thing these dogs are known for. Besides having a distinctive look, a Papillon is also noted for many other qualities. Listed below, you will find just a few of the historical references, stories and facts that have enabled the Papillon breed to gain popularity.

With their dignified appearance, a Papillon was highly prized and sought after among European royalty. Nobility who loved Papillons include Henry II, Henry III, Henry XIV, Madame de Pompadour and most notably, Marie Antoinette.

Today, the Papillon breed is still a favorite of the wealthy and privileged and for those in the public eye. Famous people who are lovers of this breed are popular singer Christina Aguillera with her dogs Chewy and Stinky, and Star Trek actor George Takei.

The Papillon experienced a rise in popularity upon being brought to France, while the breed has been long featured in paintings in Spain, and church frescoes as far back as the 13th century.

As was previously mentioned the name of the breed comes from the French word for butterfly. The droopy eared variety of Papillons are known as Phalene, which translates to mean "night moth."

With a historical past open for debate, on the HBO series, "Elizabeth I," the Mary, Queen of Scots character is shown caring for a Papillon. Though there is no data to confirm this fact, it was likely a creative choice on the part of a stylist or director.

There have also been Papillons mentioned in songs over the years as well, such as "The Twilight Singers," and "Papillon Stalemate," by an alternative band.

American actors Steven McQueen and Dustin Hoffman starred together in a movie titled, "Papillon," however for people who love the breed, the movie might not be what they thought it was. The film is actually an adventure-type movie about Steve McQueen's character busting out of a jail built upon a desert island, not at all about dogs.

In the news, a pregnant Papillon that is known by the name of Mademoiselle Giselle has adopted an abandoned squirrel by the name of Finnegan. Mademoiselle Giselle took care of the injured squirrel and took him into her home, and once she gave birth, she tended to the squirrel in much the same way she did her puppies.

Here's some pretty cool tricks our shih tzu (Corky) and papillon (Winkie) love to do all the time. Corky's other main talents include flopping on the floor (never more than a yard from you) and power-snoozing. Winkie's other main talents are collecting all his toys into a pile, whacking Corky's butt and then running away, and toad-catching.
