An excavation of archaic Gokstad, Norway revealed the remains of several dogs that were the forerunners of the Norwegian Buhund. The grave site is dated at about 900 A.D. These canines trekked with their Viking owners wherever they went.
Another name for these dogs is Norsk Buhund. It is the herding and farm canine in Norway. Bu is the word for homestead in Norwegian and also means mountain hut. The shepherds used these huts when their animals grazed in certain pastures during the summer. Beyond herding livestock, these dogs were hunters and guard dogs. They hunted bears and wolves.
During the 1920's, the original Buhund exhibition in Jaeren was held. The Norsk Buhundklubb was formed in 1939. The Norwegian Buhund Club of America was formed in 1983. The AKC gave this breed recognition in 2009.
General Looks
This breed is slightly under medium size with a square-like build. The head has a wedge-like shape and the medium size ears stand up. The muzzle is equal in length to the skull. The eyes are dark, shaped like ovals, and have a black ring around them. Their paws are small and have webs. The tail curls above the back.
Is This Your Breed?
This breed needs to exercise each day. The Norwegian Buhund has plenty of energy and high stamina. Frequent mental stimulation is a need for these dogs. They get on well with kids. The owner must provide good leadership or problems will occur.
Coat
The outer-coat is dense and hard. But it lies close to the body. The undercoat is dense and cottony. The coat covering the neck, chest, and thigh's back are the longest.
Color
The two colors are wheaten and black. The wheaten can be light cream moving through shades to intense orange. The fur can be darkly tipped. The black shouldn't have abundant bronzing. White is okay on the neck in a thin ring or the face blazed narrowly. A little patch on the chest, white paws, and a tail tipped in white is okay.
Locomotion
The top-line must be level when in motion. The dog moves freely and it looks easy without effort.
Personality
These are smart dogs and train easily. They need obedience training and their view that you are the pack leader is important to making a good house dog out of them. This breed is cheerful, adventurous, smart, alert, self-assured, affectionate, agile, brave, fast, and sensitive. Due to their need for activity, a fenced yard is needed.
