Would a Miniature Schnauzer Be an Issue to Someone Who Is Allergic to Fur?

by Dogs.net on December 22, 2011

My mom is pretty allergic to fur. We have a dog already, but she is an outdoor dog. I have the opportunity to adopt a free Schnauzer puppy in november, and I was wondering if it would probably be a problem to have the puppy as an indoor dog. These dogs seem to have "hair" not "fur" and it's cut pretty short everywhere but their faces. So I'm not sure. Any advice?

any schnauzer is generally a good dog for people with allergies. its consider “hypoallegernic” but no dog truly is

Schnauzers and Poodles have a reputation as being “hypoallergenic.” In fact, no dog is hypoallergenic, all dogs’ fur produces dander, and this is what people can be allergic to. Schnauzers, Poodles, and other dogs with curly or wiry coats simply tend to shed less. This is also why they need more grooming–they need to be brushed a lot to get that loose fur out!

I am guessing this dog is probably a miniature or standard Schnauzer (they come in three sizes, but the Giant Schnauzer, which is the size of a Lab, is uncommon). Aside from the fact that every dog should be allowed to be inside with the family for at least part of the day, smaller dogs will of course need more protection from the cold. I wouldn’t recommend any breed to be an ‘outside dog,’ except for perhaps a working sled dog or livestock guardian dog.

There are things you can do to reduce the amount of dander in your dog’s coat, though. There are special shampoos for allergy sufferers; bathing your dog frequently with these can help cut down on the allergens that go airborne.

I hope this helps!

These dogs would bother a person who is allergic to fur. They do not have “hair”, they have fur. They have a double coat like most dogs, which means that it sheads too. If you are looking for a indoor that does not shead. Try something like the poodle or the westiepoo. Of corse, its not that they have human hair, but most people are allergic to the dander that people are most allergic to. Not the fur. No dogs fur is hypoallergenic.

Actually most people are allergic to pet dander rather than the fur. Miniature Schnauzers are considered to be one of the low shedding(all dogs shed some) breeds good for people with allergies. Make the decision before you adopt the dog whether or not you need an outside dog or if you will deal with the inside dog. Mini Schnauzers are small dogs and need to be an inside dog, although they can be outside for periods of time.
The only issue I could see is that my own schnauzer has dry skin and we have to give him supplements and he still seems to have scaly skin. This could be an issue with your mom.
