Our Miniature Schnauzer Is Digging Up Our Back Yard. What Can We Do to Help Her Stop?

by Dogs.net on November 25, 2011

We have 2 Miniature Schnauzers, and our female loves to dig. Our back yard is full of holes because of her. Sometimes she digs up moles and other times she seems to just dig for fun. Why does she love to dig while our male never digs. His thing is chasing birds. Anyway I would appreciate some good advice. Thanks!

I saw something like this on It’s me or the dog. I think what she ended up doing was put the dog’s toys in a sand box and introduced him to it. The dog had such a great time digging up his toys from the sand box that he left the yard alone.

Schauzers dig. That’s just what they do. There’s not much you can do. They are terriers, and so, they dig.

Lol. I have two schnauzers too. A male & a female. My male likes to chase other animals & birds & even people sometimes. My female is just a hand full altogether.
She went through a little faze of digging too & eventually she stopped.
Its was just something she was into at the time.
Goodluck with your pets!

My dad and I had a problem with our dog digging under the fence and throughout the hard. So… He decide to put classy rocks outside in the places she liked to dig. Not just a random rock but put like a small tree there and rocks around it. and one place he got bigger stones (flat though) and put our last dog we had for 16 years and a puppy who both got ran over by an older lady that shouldn’t of been driving… anyway he put their names and had pawprints engraved and placed in another spot. and just put cement or brick where seh dug by the fence.

Do they get enough exercise? She could be digging holes because she’s bored from lack of mental and physical stimulation. Try walking her more, and teaching new tricks. My dogs love to dig as well. We have many large flat rocks that I placed over the holes they were digging. It worked until they found a new spot. We were lucky enough when we bought our house, that we have a sandbox already. Once I praised them for digging in it, they keep the digging in the sandbox.

I use pepper, ordinary pepper, i put it directly on the ground, and it works immidiatly, and do no harm. I use it in my flowerpots inside as well.
