Is It Normal for a Miniature Schnauzer to Be Quite Thin on the Back End?

by Dogs.net on November 21, 2011

My 8 month old miniature schnauzer tucks in quite a bit behind her ribs, you cant feel the individual ribs they don't stick out or anything, but her tummy seems right sucked in =/ She gets dry food down all day and caned food on a night. I have never had a schnauzer before so I don't know if this is normal...

Do not free feed your dog. You won’t be able to know if she’s eating enough, or if there is something abnormal going on. Please refer to the AKC standards to see if she’s at the right weight.

Maybe she has an eating disorder

This would be an excellent question to ask her breeder! Difficult to say without seeing her but at 8 months she is a teenager and may going through a leggy stage.
Min. Schnauzers should be sturdy and nearly square in outline – but when she has her full adult coat she will look entirely different.
Free feeding is not a good idea – dogs should look on feeding time as a privilege not a right and you’ll find she does better if you put her food down, leave it for a maximum of 15 minutes, then take up what she hasn’t eaten and don’t give her any more until her next feeding time. She’ll soon learn to eat when she is fed.

Do you mean sucked in like that? If so, that’s a normal, fit dog! However, if you are concerned about her physical condition, you could always take her in to the vet (can’t hurt anything after all).
