Is a Miniature Schnauzer a Good Dog Choice?

by Dogs.net on November 29, 2011

I am getting a dog and i am scared I will regret a miniature schnauzer. i love to spend the whole day training and walking and paying attention to my dog. i have another dog who is a dachshund and is fine with other dogs. i have a medium sized yard and a gate. i can spend quite some time grooming my dog. i have had experience with dogs but not with mini schnauzers. is the brerd right for me?

It sounds like you would be good for a Mini Schnauzer but do a lot of research first. They are terriers and trust me, terriers are a handful. They like to dig, bark, they can become destructive, and they are a lot of work and energy. They are very mischevious dog’s, but very intelligent and do well with someone who can channel there energy into training and exercise.

Schanuzers are very loving and do well when raised and socialized correctly.

If you find that a Schnauzer is to much, there are always many mixed breeds/purebreeds who suit your needs on Petfinder.com (:

Good luck!

If you’re worried now, then probably not a good choice. They are high strung, and the ones I’ve met aren’t all that sociable. They bark so as to make your ears bleed – it’s shrill, and they do it a lot.

Since you already have a Doxie and you want another dog, I would suggest you look into Doxie rescue and see what is looking for a home – you could end up with a great little dog that is on the same wavelength you and your dog are accustomed to, with no worries about translation or catering to something different. It’s so much easier than getting different breeds.

Terriers are scrappy, and can pick a fight with another dog- and I can see a Dachshund putting up a fight to that. You could end up with constant squabbles. Wouldn’t be my first choice, at all.

It seems to me like you would be very good at taking care of a miniature schnauzer.

This is a good website to learn more about caring for miniature schnauzers.
If you can give him the exercise he needs, grooming hee needs, and love he needs you would be perfect for owning one.

All dogs are good choices.

I’ve always had schnauzers.. and I don’t regret it. I love them all. How the dog reacts to other animals/people is going to depend on how you raise it.. (I actually walk mine with my friends Dachshunds quite often, they get along fine)

Puppies need attention, training, and most of all.. crate training. It makes housebreaking easier, but whenever you are not there, have the puppy crated.. at least at first. Schnauzers are extremely independent.. if they are bored, they will find something to do for themselves, and it’s normally NOT something you want them doing.. lol.. All of mine were perfectly fine at home in their crates. As it gets older (and more calm) you can leave it out in the house… but for the training period, they need some restriction on what they can get into.
