But being that dogs of this breed are so incredibly intelligent, they slowly made their way into the homes of many as respectable pet companions.

Due to their energy and enthusiasm, Miniature Schnauzers have great potential for being good playmates to children. However, on the other hand, they have big personalities and can be quite stubborn as well just like most dogs of toy breeds are.

In such cases, your best bet to help your kids and Schnauzer develop a good relationship is to make sure that both respect each other’s boundaries. Socialize your Miniature Schnauzer; it’s always better to start young. Get it used to new sights, sounds, places, other dogs, and people. As for the kids, make sure to let them know that dogs have feelings and tempers too.

Always make sure that smaller kids remain supervised in the presence of your Miniature Schnauzer. Once dogs get used to the presence of their little companions, things can be a breeze. What is cuter than a Miniature Schnauzer? A Miniature Schnauzer in a hat or t-shirt, of course. What colors are most suitable for dog? If you are tired of hearing people say, “Isn’t he cute?” about your little girl, then consider a pretty, feminine pink. Pink bows are good for a girl, or a pink t-shirt with “princess” written on it will dispel all doubt. If you want people to know that your baby is a boy, then think of a blue outfit with matching blue leash. Blue is also a good color for white schnauzers. Think of crisp white clouds against a blue sky. For a bold, modern look, a black sweater is dramatic against your white Miniature Schnauzer’s fur. If your Miniature Schnauzer is brown, think of fall colors. Brown goes well with dark green, orange and gold. For a black Miniature Schnauzer, red can be dramatic. Miniature Schnauzers normally have a compact but robust, squarely proportioned build, measuring 12 to 14 inches tall and weighing 11 to 15 pounds for females and 14 to 18 pounds for males. The tail is usually docked. The ears are V-shaped and fold forward or are cropped to stand erect. They are characterized by a long head and get their name from the German word “schnauze” which means snout, so it makes perfect sense as these schnauzer has a very distinct snout with long hair. They have whiskers, shaggy beard, bright eyes and arched spiking eyebrows.

They have a double coat. The exterior fur is wiry and the undercoat is softer. Their coat is usually solid black, salt & pepper, silver and black and sometimes white in color. As rumors circulated that the white minis carried defective or lethal genes and that the white Miniature Schnauzers Puppies have medical problems and deafness the American Miniature Schnauzer Club and the American Kennel Club standard describe the White Miniature Schnauzers as a disqualification from conformation shows. However white miniature schnauzers have no different health problems than their colored counterparts.

This important conditioning of your Miniature Schnauzer associating behavior with praise is show when you teach you dog basic commands like “Sit”. First say your puppy’s name, followed by the command “Sit”. At the same time hold your hand a few inches above you dog, then move it a little behind his dog’s head. He will raise his head to keep an eye on your hand and sit. Gentle pressure can be used on your dog’s rear if required. When he sits praise him. However, because of the months or years, during which an adult dog has been dominance, owners will need to be very strict, kind and patient to change the balance of power. Consistency is the key again as is praise after every successful change in behavior you dog shows.

Treats are very effective in training older stubborn dogs who are set in their ways but are not as necessary with puppies as the reward of praise in usually enough in it’s self.

The Miniature Schnauzer is a feisty and playful dog. It tends to be overtly active at times and often gets hurt in the process. One should be extremely careful while playing with it.

The most common problem that a Miniature Schnauzer owner faces while playing with his dog is when the dog hurts himself in the face and even worse, in the eyes.

The dog should never be allowed to hang his head outside the window because flying debris and even insects can harm his vision.

If the dog gathers dirt in his eyes, a concoction of 2 cups of water and a teaspoon of salt should be the perfect solution. Without touching his eyes, a cotton swab should be dipped into the concoction and his eyes can be effectively cleaned with the same. Avoid eye drops unless prescribed by the vet.

Powders and soaps are to be completely avoided and trimming and clipping the hair around the eyes can go a long way in preventing irritation and eye infection.

Excess mucus or tearing, cataract and glaucoma are some of the eye ailments that are seen to affect a Miniature Schnauzer. But the most common among all ailments is the dry eye.

Just as it sounds like, the dry eye syndrome is when the dog’s eyes become dry and he suffers from irritation.

When the tear glands are unable to produce adequate moisture to combat the immune system’s attack, the eyes become more and more dry.
