The mastiff dog breed originated in England from the sheepdog family. This massive beast has the potential to be a great indoor pet. The mastiff dog breed gets its name from the word massive, and the word mastiff in some languages translates into mountain-like. In Germany it just simply means dog.

In some cases having a 200 pound dog in your home may take some getting used to, because mastiff pups are very clumsy until they mature enough to where they can learn to control their size. This gentle giant is known to be very mild tempered and not easily angered, although who would really want to provoke this huge dog?

The mastiff is known to be a very casual and calm breed. This dog will in most cases not attack anyone breaking into your home, but the fear factor alone makes this dog appear to be a threat to intruders. The Mastiff Dog Breed drools a lot and is very good with kids, although it may be too big to have around babies due to its size.

This dog type is very intelligent, so simple or complex commands can be taught very easily. These dogs only live to be about 10 years old due to sheer size. The mastiff dog breed has been known to develop CHD (Coronary heart disease). Also, other things such as elbow dysplasia and becoming over weight can become a problem if not treated. It is recommended that you take the dog for daily walks or for a run in the park. Exercise has been proven to keep your dog healthy and strong.

The mastiff dog breed requires little or no effort to keep maintained. Routine nail trimmings, baths, brushing, and dry shampooing will keep your dog looking like the champion that you know he can be. This dog does not react very well to warm weather, so it is not recommended to have these dogs outside before the temperature cools down.

The mastiff comes in many different breeds listing from English mastiff, British mastiff (bull mastiff), Victorian Bulldog, Fila Brasileiro, American Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, and many more. Although each breed has its own distinct markings, sizes, and shapes, the temperament is generally the same throughout the history of the blood line. Mastiffs are very family oriented dogs, and are known to be playful as pups, gassy (flatulent) as adults, and most breeds have been known to snore loudly.

If you plan to purchase a mastiff anytime in the near future, remember to check if your home owners insurance will cover the breed. Due to their size, perception to the public, and owner negligence, this dog has been given bad reputations. Some areas of the world will not insure a home with a mastiff breed. If you have a mastiff be sure to go through the proper training with your dog. While they do make great pets, an untrained mastiff can be a very stubborn and controlling dog at times, if authority is not established early.

Mastiff

The Mastiff is a particularly large breed of dog that is surprisingly easy going, good-natured, calm, and gentle. He is a well mannered animal that can fit well in most any household. This dog needs plenty of room to move about and would not be ideal for small apartment living.

If you have a family with children in the house then owning a Mastiff would make an excellent choice as he is known to be utterly devoted and loyal to its owners, and great with little kids. This dog has high affection levels and gets along great with other pets. Another positive aspect of the Mastiff is that he makes an excellent watchdog with the ability to protect the family with strength and quickness.

Upkeep And Maintenance

When the Mastiff becomes an adult, they need a mild amount of daily exercise. A good 10 to 15 minute brisk walk would do just fine. Better yet are physical games in a fenced yard if you have the opportunity to own such a property.

This dog can live both indoors and outdoors. If you choose to keep your Mastiff outdoors then it should be noted that this breed is not fond of hot weather at all. He thrives on cooler temperatures so be sure to afford him the luxury of plenty of shade during the hot summer months if he is to be kept outside. However, the ideal living situation for a happy Mastiff is to be inside with his family as this dog is genetically geared towards protecting its pack.

Health Information

One interesting aspect that pertains to the health of the Mastiff dog breed is its weight. They are easily prone to becoming overweight or obese. Be sure to monitor his food intake and watch out not to overfeed him, especially if you would like to see your Mastiff reach his full lifespan of between 9 and 11 years.

Veterinarians suggest that Mastiffs be specifically tested for eye problems, thyroid, elbow dysplasia, and hip dysplasia. The two major health concerns that are typical in this dog breed are CHD and gastric torsion. Minor issues to watch out for are elbow dysplasia, cystinuria, and osteosarcoma.

History

This breed has a very long history. Dogs resembling Mastiffs can be viewed on Babylonian relics that date from 2200 B.C. One idea is that Phoenicians brought them to Britain in the 6th century .The name Mastiff comes from “masty,” which is the Anglo-Saxon word for powerful. Realizing this breed's potential for fighting, the Anglo-Saxons organized Mastiff and boar fights. The Romans discovered Mastiffs, when they came to Britain. They use them as war dogs and for fighting gladiators..

It is suggested that they came to the United Sates with the Mayflower, but it is documented that they were brought to the U.S. in the 19th century.

General Looks

The Mastiff has a huge body and its head has a square-like shape. It has a strong frame.

Is This Your Breed?

It is a faithful dog and gentle. It needs space, so a large yard or living in the country is better for this breed.

Coat

It has a double coat. The outer one is coarse, short, and straight. The undercoat is thick and short. It hugs the body.

Color

The colors are brindle, fawn, and apricot.

Locomotion

The front legs have ample reach and the hind legs propel. His movement portrays strength.

Personality

He is good natured, brave, and exudes dignity.
