If you own a Maltese dog then you may have noticed that your dog has some leaking around the eye area and maybe some reddish brown eye staining that is occurring.

I have 5 Maltese dogs and I have a lot of experience with Maltese eye stain and maybe I can help you with some solutions.

When I got my first Maltese puppy, I noticed that my cute little puppy had tear stains around her eyes and so I checked with my veterinarian to find out what was going on. I found out that Maltese have a tendency toward eye stains in their breed.

Okay, so now what do I do? I got permission from my vet to try several tear stain solutions and I will share a few here that might help you too.

Tip 1 – It helps your Maltese to keep their faces clean and dry. When I was first dealing with Maltese eye stain I washed my puppy’s face every day. After cleaning make sure the area is thoroughly dry.

Tip 2 – Take a close look at the food your dog is eating along with the water that they drink. In some cases there are dyes in the food which can actually exacerbate the tear staining further. One solution is to actually prepare the food yourself using only natural ingredients and allow them only to drink bottled water.

Tip 3 – It helps to keep the hair out of your Maltese dog’s eyes because hair in the eyes can increase eye irritation and cause your dog’s eyes to water and drain. Many Maltese owners accomplish this by putting the hair around the eyes into a pony tail top knot above the head – kind of cute for those of you that like that. You can also trim the hair around the eyes but for those of you that have an unsteady hand or your Maltese is a bit jumpy or skittish – I don’t recommend that you do the trimming yourself or you may cause an injury.

Tip 4 – I hesitate to even share this tip because I do NOT recommend that you do this. However it is important for you to be aware of this method that some Maltese owners use. Some people use bleach products applied to the hair around the eyes to get rid of these stains but this method can actually be extremely harmful to your dog. In fact it can not only hurt your dog, it may well lead to further staining around the eye area.

Tip 5 – This is the only method I use now because it is so easy and it works for all 5 of my Maltese dogs to keep their faces clean, dry and beautifully white. I use this special all natural powder and mix it in with my dog’s food or water. And within about 2 weeks the draining from the eyes stopped and after trimming away the stained hair as it grew out my Maltese were beautiful and no longer had eye stain problems. So this is now my favorite way to battle those eye stains – with 5 Maltese I needed a simple easy fail-safe way that works.

If you own a Maltese dog then you may have found that with the Maltese breed it is common to be cleaning Maltese tear stains to keep their faces white and clean.

Cleaning Maltese tear stains can be frustrating if you are using a method that does not work or if you are trying a method that may possibly harm your precious dog.

When I got my first Maltese I was constantly looking for ways to clean up or prevent the Maltese eye stain. I found that tear staining is a condition which is common in this particular breed.

I had heard that there were many different eye stain treatments available to help prevent tear staining, however there were many treatments that were harmful to my dog and I wanted to be sure I was using an effective and safe method on my precious pet.

In this article I will share with you 5 treatments that are commonly discussed as solutions to cleaning maltese tear stains.

The first 4 treatments are ones that I DO NOT recommend.

The 5th and last treatment I discuss is the one that I have found to be the safest, easiest and most effective treatment and it is the one I use on my own maltese dogs.

4 maltese eye stain treatments to avoid:

Treatment 1 – Tetracycline is a ten day course of treatment that your veterinarian will prescribe and may well need to be repeated a second time to be effective. If it is used on puppies it can cause their teeth to be stained yellow permanently before they have even grown.

Treatment 2 – Delta AlbaPlex is an antibiotic similar to tetracycline but contains very low amounts of steroid in it as well. This treatment will need to be used for some time before the benefits show.

Treatment 3 – Ak-Trol is an eye drop medication which is prescribed for people to use and contains neomycin, polymyxin B and dexamethasone.

Treatment 4 – Flagyl is an anti diarrhea medication that the vet will prescribe for treating yeast or giradia infections in dogs. However the metronidazole that it contains has also found to be effective in helping to treat tear stains, especially if the problem has because there has been an excessive growth of red yeast in the animal.

My favorite solution (after trying numerous options for removing tear stains):

Treatment 5 – A special powder that is mixed with my dog’s food. This is an internal treatment that works from the inside out. I don’t have to apply ointments or solutions and this makes it easy to do. It is an all natural powder that I simply add to my dog’s food. For my maltese it helped to cure the problem of maltese eye stain very quickly and has continued to work over the long term. I liked that it was safe for puppies and pregnant dogs. It contains only natural ingredients so it is unlikely to cause any unwanted side effects in your dog compared to some of the other treatments I mentioned above.

What do I like about this method? I saw results very quickly. I did not need to get a prescription from the veterinarian. So totally easy to use. I don’t have to apply any solutions or ointments to my dog. This treatment works from the inside out so it stops the problem from where it is starting. The ingredients are all natural and my Maltese love the taste. Bottom Line? This powder really works for my maltese. It just might help you battle your dog tears stains too.

Some caretakers find a way around the chore by keeping their dogs in what is known as a “puppy cut” or a “teddy bear cut,” where the hair is kept short, about a half an inch, all over the body. This style is certainly less fuss and may be more comfortable for the dog, but it’s not acceptable for a show dog.

Maltese are relatively healthy dogs, usually unburdened with the afflictions of other pure breeds. However, luxating patella, white dog shaker syndrome and progressive retinal atrophy are common in Maltese that do develop problems. Luxating patella is a condition in which the kneecap slips out of place. White dog shaker syndrome is a sudden onset of tremors, sometimes full seizures, that troubles only white dogs. Progressive retinal atrophy is just what it sounds like. It will eventually result in blindness for which there is no cure.

In keeping with the designer breed trend, Maltese are often bred with other breeds, such as poodles, to emphasize their sweet nature and intelligence.

Maltese are outgoing and intelligent little dogs. Their small stature means that they are great playful companions in any family but read on if you are considering bringing a Maltese into your family.

Maltese love children but they are not a good choice if you have small children in the house.  When I say small I mean under around eight years old depending on the maturity of the child.  Otherwise they can make great playful and wonderful family members

Children will love their miniature stature; they are little enough to be carried around. But it is because of their size that they are a dangerous combination with little children. Your child will not be able to understand how fragile your Maltese is. It’s easy to seriously injure a Maltese by standing on it, or accidentally sitting on it.

The “teacup” variety three pounds and under is a very bad dog to have with children. These dogs are too small and as a result their bones are extremely frail and brittle. It’s an unfortunate result of their small size – their bones break easily. They can far too easily be injured accidentally. Standing or sitting on your Maltese can seriously injure your dog.

If you do choose a Maltese you can greatly minimize all these risks by training the dog well as well as teaching your child all about respect for dogs and how to treat them. This will make all the difference!

You will need to teach your children how to treat your Maltese. This includes strictly enforcing a “no roughousing with the dog rule”. The kids must learn that your Maltese is fragile and should be treated as such.

If you intend on keeping a Maltese in your home we always recommend some professional training.  The cost can be minimal if you take your pet to Pet Smart.  Spend some money and make sure that your Maltese is as well socialized as he can be.

Try to get the children involved in the grooming. Maltese need a fair amount of grooming and this is one way you can encourage a great relationship between them. Even small children can gently comb the dogs coat (under supervision!).

As with any household pets; the general principle should be to teach the children to treat all animals with kindness and respect. This is one of the most important life lessons you can impart and the best place to learn is at home.

Just don’t leave your children unsupervised around a Maltese. Even though the child may mean well, that will not stop the Maltese from becoming agitated.  Some can be a little snappish, so look for a Maltese where the parents are a little mild mannered.  This will reduce the risk of any problems.  Overall Maltese make a great family pet.

Though small, the mall tease Is fairly hearty and is well-known for his beautiful long white, silky coat. this breed has a single code of thick shiny hair which is very heavy and drapes down to the floor being over 8 inches long. The ears and tail are also thickly covered with hair and the tail drapes over the dogs back. The eyes are rather large, rounded and dark. This is a small dog but sturdy. Acceptable colors for the Maltese include white and light ivory.

The Maltese makes it great bad as it is gentle and loving as well as playful and lively. Devoted to their owners, these dogs are very intelligent and quite adept at learning tricks. Though small, they can be rather bold and will let you know if there are any suspicious noises about. They typically get along quite well with other animals, however some can be snappish and they may be difficult to house train.

with the Maltese Sea to need to watch out for a few health problems the strangest of which is that they can get sunburned a long the part down the middle. Other problems could include skin problems, eye problems, respiratory problems, tooth problems and slipped stifle.

The Maltese is active indoors but can do fine in an apartment as long as you take them for regular walks. This dog will be playful well into its older years so it kind of creates its own exercise and a yard is not necessary.

This breed does require a bit of grooming and should be brushed daily as well as have his eyes cleaned daily. Since the hair does fall into the eyes, some owners will tie the hair on the top of the head in a ponytail to make cleaning the eyes easier.
