www.lhasa-apso-dogworld.com Dear fellow Lhasa Apso lover, Probably of the the most challenging aspects of working with nipping and biting in the Lhasa Apso is that it usually starts when the Lhasa Apso is a puppy. The behavior, when the puppy is small, is often considered cute. A tiny Lhasa Apso puppy growling ferociously or chasing and nipping may appear to be almost comical but once the Lhasa Apso is full grown, the nipping is no longer funny and the cute growling has turned taking the dog out in public into an embarrassing and stressful event.

Whether you have a young pup or an older Lhasa Apsos one of the most important lessons to teach is house training.

Housebreaking puppy will take time, they are just a baby and have limited to no control over their bladder or bowels but this will improve as they start to mature. Start by taking them outside every 20-30mins to the same area and pick a word or phrase to encourage the task. In time they will understand that it's a toilet break and will go to the same spot. Repetition is the key to successful training. Praise them for their correct behavior. While going outside seems like fun to them and gets them all excited, avoid playing with them, that way they will eventually understand its not play time but potty time. If after some time they have not gone return them to their crate and bring them back out 10-15mins later. When they do finally show appropriate potty behavior lavishly praise them and make a big deal of it and reward them accordingly.

Crate or tether training is also important for any age Lhasa Apsos. Keeping them at close proximity you will learn when they require to go potty.

There will be times that accidents do happen but scolding or yelling at them whether young or old, after the event does not fix the problem. Instead you can say bad girl/boy and take them straight outside and encourage the right behavior outside. Clean up the messy quickly if possible. If they do relieve themselves outside praise them excitedly and give them a treat for correct behavior.

If you do yell at your Lhasa Apso for their accidents they generally taking it that its bad to go potty anywhere and you may find that they may secretly go potty else where in the house.

Some mistakes to be aware of while house training your dog are:
Allowing them access all areas of the house before they have been properly potty trained, and by not supervising them appropriately.

While accidents do happen, confining your Lhasa Apso to a confined area (gate/crate) as well as providing regular opportunities to go potty outside while supervised and displaying excitement for their behavior and receiving a treat you will achieve the ultimate goal of house training them.

Once your dog has finally figured out the appropriate behavior when needing to go potty you'll only have to give a cue and they will know its time to go outside. And you'll know the cues when they need to go.

Cues are also helpful when feeding. Having set times will aid in positive house training. Another thing that is common with males is marking by lightly urinating on things they pass. Neutering or spaying will usually eliminate this problem.

House training your Lhasa Apso requires repetition, consistency, routine, and positive reinforcement for correct behavior. Once they have achieved about 2 months of no accidents then it's safe to say they are successfully housebroken.

When it comes to potty training dogs, there is no fool proof method. Different breeds respond to different training tactics. However, the secret to training your Lhasa Apso lies in understanding this breed's background and figuring out an appropriate potty training method that would work with its temperament.

In the past, Buddhist monks believed that Lhasa Apso dogs brought them luck. It is this special treatment that has caused Lhasa Apso dogs to develop such strong personalities. This constant need to be in charge may pose as a difficulty to the owner when it comes to dog training, but as long as you teach your dog early on who the true pack leader is, this won't be a problem.

Lhasa Apso dogs respond well to crate training due to their denning instinct. Just like any other dog, Lhasa Apsos have a natural tendency to keep the area they rest and sleep in clean. Once puppies are born, it is their mother's responsibility to keep their "den" clean. Eventually, the little ones learn to relieve themselves outside their living area. Thus, providing a den for your Lhasa Paso in the form of a crate will prevent your dog from soiling your home.

First things first, get a crate appropriate for your Lhasa Apso's size. Make sure to pad it with soft and washable liners. Help your dog get used to the crate; it may help to put a treat in there to encourage it to come in. Also make sure to use the words "crate" or "den" whenever it enters that area to help your dog understand what it needs to do when it hears the command.

Don't close the door of the crate until your dog gets used to being in the crate. Once your dog does get used to the crate, you can begin shutting the door for periods of time. As soon as you get this part of the process done, you can start taking your dog on walks to encourage it to eliminate at the appropriate place. Always remember to praise your dog for performing, but never punish it for doing the opposite. Scaring your pet, especially with physical punishment will only interfere with the training process.

At night, keep the crate in a place where you can easily hear your dog. If it whines excessively, it may mean that it's time to take your dog out to eliminate. Crate training is a perfect potty training method for Lhasa Apso dogs. Not only this, it provides them with a sense of security as well. With enough patience and dedication, crate training your Lhasa Apso should definitely be a breeze.

Description: The Lhasa Apso is a toy breed of dog, albeit a sturdy one. This dog will measure between 10 to 11 inches at the shoulder and will weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. The bitch is slightly smaller than the male. The coat of the Lhasa is a very dense, long double coat, with the hair long over all parts of the dog, including the head. Almost any coat color is allowed, but preference is given to honey, sand, cream, or smoke. The Apso has a short muzzle and slightly undershot jaw. The tail is carried jauntily over the back. The Lhasa Apso has a long life span, reaching from 15 to 18 years.

History: Originating near the Tibetan city of Lhasa, the Lhasa Apso is an ancient breed, being recognizable as such as long ago as 800BC. This little dog served as a guardian for monasteries, temples, and the homes of the nobility. The Lhasa makes a fine watchdog. As the Tibetans believed that when the owner died, his soul went into his Lhasa Apso, it was difficult for this dog to be acquired. The 13th Dalai Lama presented some of these dogs to a visitor from the west in the 1930s and this introduced the Apso to America.

Temperament: Having developed in close proximity with humans, the Lhasa Apso is a devoted little dog that displays great loyalty to its master. This breed likes to be in physical contact with its owner and will often rub against its favorite human. As the Lhasa was originally a guard dog, it is still somewhat distrustful of strangers. This breed is good with children, but older ones, who understand how to handle dogs are probably best. This is a breed with a mind of its own, and can be difficult to train.

Health Issues: One of the biggest health problems facing the Lhasa Apso is progressive retinal atrophy. This will cause the dog to eventually go blind. As this disease usually strikes older dogs, it should not present a great problem to either the dog or the owner. Hip dysplasia can occur rarely, but this is basically a healthy breed.

Grooming: One look at the beautiful coat of the Lhasa Apso tells you that this dog is going to need a great deal of grooming. The coat must be brushed and combed every day to prevent it from tangling or matting. If the Lhasa Apso is not going to be shown, it can be given a puppy or rough coat for ease of care. As the ears are floppy, they should be checked and kept free from infection. The eyes tear, so make sure they are cleaned regularly.

Living Conditions: The Lhasa Apso will make a perfect apartment dog. As this little dog will play happily inside, it will need only a short walk every day to keep it in good condition. The Lhasa bonds strongly with its owner and will suffer separation anxiety if not kept in the house. It is not a suitable dog for outdoor living, in any case. This might be a perfect dog for retired people and those with a less active lifestyle.

The Lhasa Apso was a dog breed established approximately around the 7th century AD. They were first discovered in the isolated ranges of the Himalayan Mountains.

Incidentally, during that time, Tibet was going through its conversion to Buddhism. As a result, Lhasa Apsos were extensively trained and were used as temple guards. But perhaps the trait that makes Lhasa Apsos the most interesting among all the other dog breeds is the fact that they were sent to the imperial courts of China as tokens of respect, veneration, and fortuity. As good luck talismans, the best of this breed were even sent to accompany the Dalai Lama.

It was not until the 1930s before Lhasa Apsos made their way to the Western world. Getting these dogs from the East all the way to the West was quite difficult since there was a point in time that exporting this breed was forbidden. Nonetheless, Tibetan dogs made their first appearance in England during the Youngsband expedition. Back then, they were referred to as "Lhasa Terriers."

Since it was virtually impossible to get more Tibetan dogs for breeding, the English started breeding them with Terriers. Not long after, the Tibetan breed died out. Thankfully, a few Tibetan specimens were eventually brought in. Few people were able to breed Apsos, but they remained among the elite.

Unfortunately, for quite some time the Second World War halted the English breeding of these dogs. However, after the war, a man named Suydam Cutting was privileged enough to receive five dogs from the 13th Dalai Lama. After the 13th Dalai Lama's death, the Regent offered them two more dogs, a couple of golden Lhasa-Apsos.

For a time, Lhasa Apsos were even bred with Shih Tzus from China. But as time progressed, a good number of Lhasa Apsos were brought into the West --- just enough to be able to continue the lineage of this wonderful breed.

It is also interesting to know that the way dogs of this breed have been regarded with such importance and attention has ultimately helped them develop such strong personalities. Lhasa Apsos are very alert and intelligent dogs, but they also possess the constant need to be in charge. Dogs of this breed can be quite hardheaded and bossy.

Nonetheless, it is always helpful to take a look back at our loving pet companion's history. Not only does it provide us with interesting tidbits of information, most importantly, it helps us understand our furry companions as best as we can.
