Labrador Retriever > Labrador Retriever?

Labrador Retriever?

by Dogs.net on April 27, 2011

Hello,

if you have been reading some of my previous posts, you will know that my family and I are trying to find a breed of dog that best suits our life style. Staffordshire Bull Terrier is my first choice, but I am also curious about the labrador retriever. I just have a couple of questions about the labrador retriever. Please answer all of them.

1) Will a labrador retriever bark to alert me if someone strange is on my property?
2) Not that the labrador retriever will be used as a guard dog, but if someone threatened me and my family, and the lab was there, would he protect us?
3) Do labrador retrievers have big intimidating barks?
4) Do you think that if we saw someone strange outside, and from inside the house we told a lab to speak (bark), would the intruder get scared and leave?
5) Just out of curiosity, but are labrador retrievers muscular and strong dogs?
6) And finally is it true that if you use food while training, a labrador retriever can learn just about anything?

The answer to every answer is yes. Labs are excellent dogs and VERY intelligent. I don’t believe there is anything you an’t rain them to to. They very intimidating barks and are protective over the masters. Some can be overweight, but that is due to the owner’s feeding habits. Mine is in great shape and is wonderful.

1) yes, most dogs bark when a stranger enters their territory
2) it depends on the dog but labs are known for their loyalty, so probably
3) it depends on what you mean by intimidating, they are big dogs so they do have deep voices
4) it depends on the intruder, not everyone is scared of dogs, but it may make them give a second thought
5) Labs are extremely athletic dogs, but like people, you can’t just expect them to be automatically muscled, you would have to help your dog ‘workout’
6) yes, labs are extremaly smart dogs, but they can be difficult to train because they are so hyper

Awesome dogs! Thats why they are #1 through AKC
1. Yes, they are very aware of their surroundings
2. Yes, he/she would protect you but I’m not sure if they would attack like a pit bull.
3. They have very deep barks! Mine even shocks me at times! lol
4. They are very trainable. One of the smartests breeds out there! You wouldn’t be disappointed!
5. VERY strong dogs but you have to train them
6. You can use any form of a treat. They like many things but make sure what you use is healthy for them. Cheese, hot dogs and small dog treats are used often.

Good luck! I sure do love my dog. He was the easiest dog to house train! They become part of the family and use those puppy eyes to get what they want. You can also tell by looking at their eyes how they are feeling. They are very affectionate dogs!

well you need some advice her i can tell you ha ha. Ok to start a staffy, is a people dog…”loves the attention”, they say if you lose you staffy, to look to the nearest school, as they love children. Okay now to the lab, labs stay as a young dog in their mind, most of their lives eg.. digging/ playing, and they are the best dog to give you the sad look, to get treats, this can be their down fall, as labs can put on weight quickly. If the dog is old enough, and is inside, i would suggest, to start training him/her. firstly with little food reward, but buy a childrens metal clicking beetle “they look like a beetle and have a clicker underneath”. Then when you reward your dog, click the beetle, he will learn to then understand to come to you, when he hears the click, then back off on the treats, and just use the clicker, and your voice, then drop out the clicker. You will end up just useing your voice in the end. “Would the intruder get scared”??, depends on the intruder, but a labs bark is somewhat deep, and you can buy black labs, at night it is hard to tell if it is a rottie. Labs can be strong and somewhat clumsy with their talls, ah but you goto love’em lol. i would actually suggest a boxer, and some might disagree with this, but a rottie, they are a good family protectent and once you get one, you will see to the family, they are just big softy’s, but get a pup, or you might be buying problem, with temper and hip displaysia . Hope this helped.

I own a lab and…

Yes, he barks. As soon as he hears someone even pull in the drive way. He’ll help himself to the window, look out on his own, and let me know someone is here.
I can’t say they will protect their property. My dog hasn’t ever had to come to that, but I’m sure his barking is enough to scare someone away (if they aren’t supposed to be there in the first place). Most dogs, however, will do something if they feel threatened ,so you’ll never know unless it happens. You don’t want a mean dog though. You’ll be dealing with loads of lawsuits.
Yes, labs barks are loud. At least, mine is. And he’s only 9 months old.
My lab usually barks as soon as he hears something outside. So, you wouldn’t have to tell him. As soon as someone knocks on your door, also, they will bark.
They are large breeds, muscular and strong.
I’ve never actually heard about the last one. But they are fast learners because they are so smart anyways.

My lab can do anything you wouldn’t even expect a dog to do. He’s so smart.

Good luck =] They are fun dogs.

Every dog is different, of course, and Labs aren’t known for their guarding abilities, but most will certainly be protective if it’s called for, especially in the matter of letting you know if something’s going on that they don’t like. They’re also big enough to give most people pause for thought. Most of them have very big barks. And yes, Labs are very physically strong dogs; consider that they were bred to retrieve birds in cold water all day long. There was a case some years ago of a man whose Lab fell off his sailboat, and it was some time before he realized the dog was gone. The dog was eventually found, after it had swum five miles to land. We had a Lab when I was a kid. My teenage brother could hang onto the dog’s tail in the water, and the dog could tow him without slowing down at all or even seeming to notice. They are highly trainable, as any dog bred to work with people must be. They sure do love their food, and this is why you see so many overweight Labs. They will eat just about anything, any time, and look hungry for more, so too many owners give in to this. A Lab in good shape is a very strong, well-muscled dog.
