Labrador Retriever > Best Companion Pet for My 5 Year Old Labrador Retriever?

My labrador seems lonely and more often than not I'm not there for him. He suffers from arthritis and prefers sleeping much of the day. I've been told that it will hurt his feelings and make him feel old if I bring a young puppy. I don't want that. I'm not someone who just doesnt care about my dog. I'd love for him to have a companion to socialise with throughout the day.
Perhaps another labrador?
Any suggestions/experiences?
