Irish Red and White Setter

History

The Irish Red and White Setter was bred from different types of Spaniels. Its history trails back to the middle of the 18th century. The breeding was gauged by the dog's ability to work, so that red setters and red and whiter setters were bred to each other. When in about 1880, many breeders favored the solid red dogs, Noble Huston help to save the Irish Red and White Setter from extinction. This clergyman preserved this breed in Northern Ireland.

The popularity of the solid red dogs rose among breeders because they were favored in the United States, and they were also still liked in Ireland. The breeders mated the ones they could sell the most. The Irish Red and White Setter Society was started in 1944. The Irish Red & White Setter Club of America  began in the 1980's.

General Looks

The head is wide but well proportioned. The muzzle is square. The eyes are round and  the eye colors are hazel and brown. The ears are close to the head. The body is muscular and the neck is somewhat arched. The tail is tapered and feathered.

Is This Your Breed?

This breed must have regular exercise such as walking quickly each day and a yard to run in .Without enough exercise the Irish Red and White Setter gets bored and hard to manage. They are good family dogs. The coat requires brushing each day to look its best. This breed's shedding is average. Bathe when necessary. This isn't an apartment dog. He needs a big yard.

Coat

The fur is long and silk-like. It feathers on the back of each leg. The outer edge of the ear is feathered. A fringe is created on the throat and chest. The fur is fine textured.

Color

The color is red and white.

Locomotion

When the dog is trotting, the gait is brisk, graceful, and the strides are lengthy.

Personality

This breed is friendly, brave, independent, and affectionate. It isn't a good guard dog. It likes kids and other animals. Some are reserved and others are anxious. Train this breed from an early age, so his independence won't make him difficult to train.
