The Havanese is the National dog of Cuba. He was once called the Havana Silk Dog or the Spanish Silk Poodle mainly because of the coat being like raw silk floss, profuse but extremely light and soft. In its native country of Cuba the coat was never clipped and the hair never tied into a topknot. The Cubans believed the hair falling over the eyes of the Havanese protected them from harsh sun.

The Havanese was brought to Europe in the 18th century where it found favor in the courts of Spain, France and England. By the mid-eighteenth century Queen Victoria owned two Havanese and Charles Dickens had one. In Cuba during this same time period the Havanese became the family dog, playmate of children, a watchdog, and herder of the family poultry flock.

Only a handful of Havanese found their way to the United States after the Cuban revolution. All the Havanese in the world today, except those from the iron curtain countries and those remaining in Cuba come from those 11 Havanese immigrants. Havanese type has remained almost unchanged from that of the dogs painted in the 18th century.

Health Problems of the Havanese

Cataracts in Havanese can develop early or late. They can cause blindness or be slow in growth and not progress to blindness. To date, all the early onset, blinding cataracts have been found in Havanese with chondrodysplasia.

Surgical correction of cataracts (removal) is best done before they become mature. For this reason, annual CERF exams are highly recommended for the Havanese.

Orthopedic abnormalities such as Chondrosysplasia are literally "faulty cartilage." It can be manifested in a variety of ways:

• By premature closure of the growth plates of long bones either symmetrically or asymmetrically which can result in shorts legs (dwarfism0 that are straight or bowed either unilaterally or bilaterally.
• Chondrodysplastic Havanese dogs can also have legs of normal length but deviated unilaterally or bilaterally.

Treatment for Chondrosysplasia is surgical in cases where deviations are severe enough to interfere with function. Surgical treatment consists of straightening the leg.

Luxating patellas is also a concern in the Havanese breed. It is one of the defects that is considered genetic by the AKC. Surgical correction renders the Havanese ineligible to compete in conformation shows. It is also not recommended to breed a Havanese with luxating patellas as this can be passed into future generations.

Legg-Calve-Perthes results when the blood supply to the femoral head is interrupted resulting in avascular necrosis or death of the bone cells. This also is considered genetic and it is recommended that Havanese dogs affected with LCP not be used in breeding programs.

Treatment for LCP involves removal of the head of the femur and the femoral neck on the affected side.

The incidences of hip dysplasia in Havanese are not known because of the low numbers of dogs that have been checked.

There appears to be a significant number of heart murmurs showing up in the Havanese breed. Treatment of cardiac problems may include drugs, diet and/or surgery.

Deafness has been found in the Havanese breed. Deafness can be diagnosed in Havanese pups as young as 5 weeks of age by use of BAER testing. The incidence in Havanese is not known as testing has not been widespread or consistent.

Other conditions with lower incidences found in Havanese include, but not limited to, seizures, kidney dysplasia, hypothyroidism and skin problems including sebaceous adenitis.

All these problems can be screened in breeding dogs. While there is no guarantee that health problems will not crop up, good, reputable breeders can certainly tip the odds in their favor by screening their breeding dogs for health issues in order to make intelligent breeding decisions.

Havanese dogs are great pets because they are very friendly and clever. Despite being small in stature, these dogs are full of energy and always ready to entertain and play. They they enjoy being around little kids so they are usually kept in houses where young kids are living. If you are looking to get a dog, consider a havanese dog. There are some thing you should know if you plan on purchasing a havanese dog for your family.

Make sure your train your havanese dog. Make sure you train your havanese dog when they are young. This will give you the best results in its training. Treat your havanese dog like your own kid with lots of love and patience when you are training it. Train your dog consistently so it knows which commands to follow. If you don’t have any know how with training havanes dogs, you can bring your new pet to training classes to get the best outcome.

When training your dog, be strict but not brutal. Puppies will always respond better when you are positive in your approach rather than when you are harsh. When you reward or punish your dog, do so consistently so it does not get confused over commands. When a dog does a good thing, reward it with a treat so your dog understands that this behavior is what is wanted.

Remember havanese dogs don’t obey very easily not because they don’t like to obey you but because they are free spirits by nature and don’t like to get tied down by anything very easily. Since a havanese dog has loads of energy, don’t leave it alone for long periods of time, as they will try to keep themselves entertained in your house. This might lead to a lot of unwanted destruction in your house due to its playful nature. havanese dogs love kids. It’s alright to allow your kids around them provided you set certain guidelines. These guidelines should always see to it that neither your kids nor your pet gets affected or hurt negatively in any way.

Don’t compromise on the quality of food given to your pet. Only feed it with the best quality food which contains all the important nutrients required by a growing dog. If you will try to save on the cost by buying low quality food, you will anyway spend the same amount as you will have to buy the food in larger quantities to compensate for the proportion of nutrients. Always take the help of a dog expert or a vet when you are not able to come with a proper food plan for your pet. When your pet havanese develops allergies, it can face problems on its skin and the digestive system too. Always note whatever symptoms which occur on your pet. You should then contact your vet and tell him in detail about it. Always keep the contact details of a competent vet as you will always need this when your havanese pet needs medical attention.

Use these suggestions and you will be able to care for your new dog very well. These procedures will help make sure the dogs live a long time and be very healthy. People who own pets develop strong attachments for their pets and nobody wants them to die young. Havanese dogs make for great and lovable dogs to own. Havanese dogs are wonderful with children, easy to train, fun, and energetic. They are great pets to own and if you are looking to buy a new dog, you should think about getting one of them.

If you suffer from allergies and your in the market for a new dog, it would make sense that you look for a dog that is hypoallergenic. Be aware though that no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, and some are just basically considered low allergy dogs. A hypoallergenic dog will typically shed a lot less hair than typical dogs. Even hairless dogs shed some dander or hair to some degree.

Please be advised that if you are to get a Havanese dog that these dogs must be groomed regularly to help keep them as hypoallergenic as can be. It's known that dogs without any hair or that grows hair continuously are the best dogs for hypoallergenic people. While some people are really allergic to everything of the dog, including it's saliva, there are unfortunately no breed of dog that is hypoallergenic in terms of saliva. Some individuals who have terrible, highly severe allergies may still not be able to be around hypoallergenic dogs at all. Before deciding is the Havanese dog is right for you, perhaps it would be a great idea if you spent just a few days around them first , to find out if you'll be fine owning on of them.

You might be lucky to find that not all dogs are created equal , meaning that while one breed of dog might make you get allergies, and another might just not! You might even be so lucky as to find a particular dog that you are not allergic to, whereas you are indeed allergic to that breed of dog, so it all varies really. This is exactly why it makes sense that you spend some time with the dog to find out exactly if it would be a good investment to go ahead and get the dog or not.

If you are getting a hybrid dog , you should also be aware of their rather low potential to take hypoallergenic qualities. Again, the best measure of this will always be to spend some time with the mutt to see if you really are allergic to it or not.

The bottom line is that depending on how severe you allergies actually are, you might still find it to be incredibly bearable to live around a Havanese dog. As a rule of thumb, always keep your dogs hair cut regularly, as this is probably the best way to keep the dog itself at it's most allergen free. Also, if you have carpets in your home, you may want to clean them regularly, at least once every other day. This should greatly help with keeping household allergens out of your way also! If you have curtains of drapes then you should really consider washing them at least once a week. Have you ever considered getting a home air purifier?

And lastly , you should also consider talking to your health care provider for safe, easy to take medicines that you might be able to take that can also greatly help you manage the nuisance of pet allergies and also household allergens.

It's no secret that Havanese dogs are truly great companion dogs! With an average life span of between 12 to 15 years and so many other positive character traits, it's easy to see how a Havanese dogs might just be the dog that you were looking for!

Some positives of this dog might include:

-They are very affectionate with family and love to play and cuddle
-They have minimal amounts of shedding
-They are perfectly suitable for apartments
-They are also highly compatible with little children
-They are rather easy to train
-They have moderate energy levels
-They are known to be very friendly towards strangers
-They also have great general health

On the downside, they do tend to have a potential for weight gain, they generally do not do well at home alone, they have a high drool potential, which can get messy at times and they also have a wanderlust, which can prove tedious for some pet owners of this breed.

This dog is very much loved for it's charm and affectionate personality and children and other dogs all seem to fall in love with this type of dog very easily. They are also known for being very much into their owners, so if you are thinking about getting a pet such as the Havenese, prepare for lots of loving and affection!

One nuisance might be the dog's ability to get rather anxious when it is left alone. This is really a type of house trained pet and leaving this dog in alone in a vacant backyard , away from people, or it's owner, will make for a very unhappy dog. Considering this dog has long been the family dog of many wealthy families in Cube, it's not entirely strange to see how they might have a very sticky personality.

But don't be fooled by it's cute persona as the Havanese is also great watch dogs and is even used to sniff out termites in buildings and they also make great performing "show dogs". With their long history of performing in shows and circuses all across Europe, it's easy to see how these cute little dogs can often win the heart of so many humans and owners alike!

Another key note of this type of dog is it's high levels of energy. This dog is very agile, and you might even find that playing Frisbee and flyball to be very beneficial to the both of you!

You might even find that the Havanese dog is very clingy, and you will soon discover that its very hard to leave the dog out of your site, and will often follow you around all through the house and if left alone, you can be sure that the dog will become highly anxious and irritable.

You might find pleasure in the amount of friendly laughter this dog can offer you also, as Havanese dogs love to be silly and are often considered goofballs also. Altogether this dog makes for a really great, friendly pet!
