New snow at 13th of February 2010. For northern Germany conditions a never ending winter. Enjoy this walk with our dog Bianca, a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (Swissi). We're visiting the horse Danny, a gray pony and have a look to a passing train (Trainspotting). Note for all YouTubers who do not know this red hatchback compact car (I think they sell it only in Europe): This is a SEAT LEON, manufactured in Spain. SEAT is a daughter from VW and this LEON is based on a VW Golf / Rabbit. They have engines from VW and a lot of parts from VW. In my opinion a LEON is more sporty than a Golf (I tested both). And it's much cheaper. By the way: A perfect car for driving on winter roads. Neuschnee am 13. Februar 2010.

Description: The Greater Swiss Mountain dog is a large and muscular dog, with a tri-colored coat. Their coat should have a black base with white and rust marking, symmetrical marking are preferred by breeders. They have straight legs with compact and round feet. They can weigh between 90-140 pounds and stand 24-29 inches, with males being on the larger size. They have a deep chest with a level top line. Their head is broad and flat with a square muzzle, their ears are triangular in shape and lie close to the head, with eyes that are almond shaped and hazel or chestnut in color.

History: As the name would suggest the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was developed in Switzerland, and is thought to be descended from the Roman Mastiffs, brought to the area more than 2000 years ago. They are the largest and the oldest of the four Sennenhund Breeds. They were used as guard dogs, and as working dogs, at one time having the nickname 'the poor mans horse' they were used to pull carts and to guard and heard livestock. It is thought that it was the rise in machinery that brought about the demise of the dog. However, it's thanks to, Dr. Albert Heim, who 'rediscovered' the breed in 1908 and worked to revive their numbers, that they are arround today. They were recognized by the AKC in 1995, but to this day remain a rare breed.

Temperament: The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog makes a great family pet and will be very devoted. They have an easy-going nature and will happily welcome, family and friends. They also make good watch dogs, and will bark if they hear or see something that shouldn't be there, however they do not make good guard dogs as they are not at all aggressive. They are slow to mature, taking 2-3 years, and have a habit of chasing small animals, something they should be trained not to do from a young age. Overall though they are a happy dog, that enjoys family life and has an even temperament.

Health Issues: Similarly, to most large dogs, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is prone to bloat and hip dysplasia and other digestive problems. They are also at risk of developing epilepsy, with an American survey showing that 98% of them carry the gene for epilepsy, though, due to their low numbers, the actual number of dogs with epilepsy is not known. They can also suffer from distichiasis, which is where they have extra eyelashes. Their lifespan like their health issues cannot be accurately measured due to their low numbers, but is thought to be around 10-12 years. Grooming: The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is easy to groom, they are an average shedder and, a simple brush down with either a rubber brush or a hard bristled brush should be all that's needed. Bathe them only when necessary though a simple brush or wipe down should suffice.

Living Conditions: Overall the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog prefers cooler climates, but will be fine as long as it's not too hot. They would do fine in an apartment, though a small garden would be more than suitable. They are not inactive, but they are definitely not hyper-active dogs. Only moderate exercise is needed, however a good long walk once a day would be perfect.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog does not need extensive exercise so she can be kept in an apartment as long as she can get daily long walks. A properly fenced in yard would be ideal. She is a great watch dog and guard dog. She generally gets along well with other pets and dogs. It is said that she is good with older children. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with any puppy or dog. She prefers cooler climates and has an easy care coat.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is 23 to 29 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 130 to 135 pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is no exception. Be on the look out for Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), bone disease, epilepsy (common in dogs), bloat (Gastric Dilation-Volvulus, the second leading killer of dogs, can kill within the hour, this space is too limited for a complete explanation but you should read up on this). Feeding more then once a day and avoiding exercise right after meals may help guard against bloat and eye problems. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

*Grooming. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has a double coat. The outer coat is short, shiny and dense and the inner coat is very thick. She is an average shedder. She should be brushed weekly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

*Life Span. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog can live between 10 and 12 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

*History. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog comes from Switzerland. It is said that they are descended from Mastiff dogs that came with Roman soldiers when he invaded Switzerland. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1995.

One of the widely known beginnings of the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog can be traced back to the first century B.C. when they were first brought to Switzerland by the Romans. Others say though that the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was first brought long before by the Phoenician traders.

One thing is for certain. This breed of dog is a product of mating foreign large mastiff-type dogs brought to Switzerland with their indigenous dogs. Traditionally known to be herding dogs, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs today are great as guard dogs. Although they are very strong, energetic and tend to bark excessively, they are very gentle in nature and respectful of the family they live with.

Characteristics of a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

As your puppy grows up, they'll further develop the features of a true Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. Females will reach a height of about 23.5 to 27 inches and weigh around 85 to 115 pounds. Males, on the other hand, will reach a height of about 25.5 to 28.5 inches and weigh around 110 to 140 pounds. Their fur is double-coated and tri-colored of black, rust and white. The top coat is shiny, dense and short while the bottom coat is very thick.

Caring for the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

With this type of coat, your dog requires weekly brushing to maintain its healthy coat. Their toenails need attention as well. It should be clipped regularly with a highly recommended guillotine-type trimmer. As for dental care, their teeth must be brushed with a specialized toothbrush and toothpaste at least twice a week. This way, you can prevent dog periodontal diseases that may lead to bad breath, pain, loss of teeth, and other serious ailments.

The early years of your Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are very crucial. All dogs are definitely different, but they all need the same amount of affection, care and training to enjoy a happy and healthy pet life. If you ever note the initial onset of signs and symptoms of any disease, contact your veterinarian immediately.

During their first year, it is a must that you bring your dogs to your veterinarian frequently for shots, boosters and routine checkups. As they grow up into adults, a yearly visit for shots and checkup would do.

In feeding your Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, remember to feed it more than once a day. Like humans, never let them exercise or let them engage in any strenuous activity right after meals. Do avoid feeding them sweets especially chocolates.

Common Illnesses

Some common diseases to be cautious of in this kind of dog breed are bone diseases, epilepsy, bloating, eye problems, Canine Hip Dysplasia, and Volvulus. If your dog is fortunate enough to be born without any disease, there is no reason for you to sit back and relax.

With proper guidance and responsible pet ownership, you'll be able to fully develop your dogs' potentials and capabilities. Most importantly, you'll be able to spend about 10 to 12 happy years with your Greater Swiss Mountain dog.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is an absolute teddy bear. Full of love and affection that makes the perfect house pet, this dog is ideal for families that not only want a dog that can be trusted around children, but also one that makes an imposing watchdog. They are a sensitive breed, extremely loyal to its owners, and gentle with other pets in the home.

A Brief History Of The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Switzerland is the original area of origin for this breed and the first function of the dogs were used as guardians and draft dogs. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is said to be the largest and oldest of the four types of Swiss Mountain Dogs in existence. The other three are the Bernese, Appenzeller, and the Entlebucher.

One theory of the breed's bloodline is that they were derived from Molossian dogs or the Mastiff, which were used when the Romans crossed over into Switzerland during the Ancient times. Other researchers claim that the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog came from the Phoenicians when they brought them into Spain sometime during 1000 B.C.

Regardless of the specific truth behind the dog's bloodline, we have watched them spread throughout Europe in great numbers to become interbred with various native dogs. Eventually, they developed through independent lines and small communities, still remaining excellent guard dogs, draft dogs, and herders.

All of these dogs were known as “Metzgerhunde Dogs” and shared common physical appearances. Therefore, they were assumed to be the same breed type. Up until the latter part of the 1800s did these dogs become separated into four distinct types by the research of Professor A. Heim. He noticed that there were more specific differences in these dogs than what was assumed.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was finally claimed as its own breed in 1908 but it took some time for them to become popular, especially with the disaster of two World Wars. In 1968, the breed made its way to the United States and was officially recognized by the AKC in 1985 as a member of the Miscellaneous Class, then onto the Working Group in 1995.

Upkeep Requirements For The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

As a member of the Working Group, this breed thrives on roaming the great outdoors in search of something to do, particularly in colder climates. Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs need plenty of daily exercise which can be met by a vew brisk walks on the leash or long hikes through nature's trails.

If need be, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog can live outside, as they have a high tolerance for cold temperatures, but like all pets that thrive on human companionship, it is best for them to sleep inside with the family at night. Grooming requirements consist of only a once-a-week brushing. When shedding, a daily brushing is best.

Health Concerns

The average life span of a healthy Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is between ten and twelve years. The only major health problem that runs common in the breed is CHD. Minor issues include seizures, panosteitis, gastric torsion, female urinary incontinence, shoulder OCD, distichiasis, and splenic torsion.

History

The Greater Swiss Mountain dog is believed to have come from some dogs abandoned by the Romans, when their armies went on northward. Thus, they have the same ancestry. These canines all had similar markings and coloring; there were four kinds: Entlebucher, Appenzeller, Grosser, and Berner. The Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund is another name for the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, which is the biggest of the four types. The Senner were herders for dairymen living in the Swiss Alps. These dogs worked with the herdsmen and pulled carts.

They were also known as Swissy and these were the most popular working dog, but their use started to decline in the middle of the 19th century. In 1908, a good specimen of this breed was exhibited at Langental, Switzerland. Franz Schertenleib brought this dog to the show. A judge named Dr. Albert Heim from Zurich said that he was a wonderful specimen. As an exhibition judge, the doctor wrote reports about the dogs and the first writing about them occurred in 1913. He said this dog was a great specimen of the butcher dog of which there were few left. He encouraged breeders to bring back the breed.

The Swisse Kennel Club gave the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog recognition in 1910. The AKC gave it recognition in 1995.

General Appearance

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is heavily boned and big with strong muscles. The muzzle, paws, and tail's tip have some white fur on them. His back, ears, and the greater area of his legs are black. There is some rusty color on his checks, over his eyes, and some on his legs.

Is This Your Breed?

He is very sociable and likes being around his owner and family. The owner needs to have patience concerning house breaking, though he will learn to go outside, doing this regularly may take several months of training. He needs exercise each day, but in hot climates don't exercise excessively. He might get overheated. Brush his coat once each week.

Coat

The overcoat is thick. The texture of the overcoat can be fine or coarse. The fur may be straight or wavy. It can be short or longer. The undercoat is thick and the coloring is dark gray, light gray, and tawny. The undercoat has to cover his neck, but can be on all of his body.

Color

The standard for this breed requires white, black, and rust. But some are white, tan, and blue and others are white and rust.

Locomotion

The back is supposed to be level when the dog is moving. The gait is formed with sufficient reach and a strong rear drive.

Personality

He is a happy dog and likes children and treats them gently. He really likes people. He is enthusiastic, determined, bold, loyal, active, dignified, serene, and stubborn.
