How Much Money a Month Must Be Spent on a Great Dane?

by Dogs.net on December 6, 2011

I've always wanted to own a Great Dane, but I'm beginning to wonder if I'd be able to afford the food costs!

Owners of Great Danes, is your dog eating you out of house and home? How much money must I set aside if I'd like to own such a large dog?

Well I have a Great Dane. And I must confess, we buy here pretty cheap dog food, pretty low quality stuff that’s really cheap and we spend $50 a month for CHEAP dog food when if we fed her the good stuff that she really should eat, it would cost about twice as much a month, maybe a little less Then there’s vet bills. One trip to the vet for a normal thing will cost about twice as much with her as it would with an average sized breed. They need more antibiotics, more anesthesia, more bandages, more stitches, more everything. Then there’s the fact that a GIANT puppy with GIANT jaws will destroy massive amounts of things. Our dog has eaten
A door
a door frame
a couch
an entire pork tenderloin
a rug
a vacuum
millions of pens
and on and on and on

you must also sacrifice you couch to the dog because they just will not accept the fact that they are not allowed on the furniture. Their fast growing nature as a puppy means you’ll go through several collars.

In general vet bills and food are the highest problems. Our dog has had cuts that needed stitches before, $400 was the cheapest stitching job we had done. Then there’s not only the money investment but also the time investment. You must spend A LOT of time, training, exercising, feeding, playing with, socializing, and much more with your dog.

They are a lot of money and time and work. But if this is really the most perfect breed of dog for you, it will be worth the time and effort.

I have 3 Danes It costs me @ $120 – $130 per month to feed the 3.
Danes don’t eat as much as people think if they are fed a good quality food such as Canidae, Chicken Soup, Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, etc.
Stay away from the cheap store brands..they aren’t good quality, they take a lot to feed (it takes up to 3 times more for a dog to get proper nutritional benefits from cheap foods then it does a good quality food) and they produce a lot waste.A Dane should NEVER be fed the cheap grain laden foods. It is poor economy to feed these cheap foods and you aren’t doing your Dane any favors health wise.

You also need to consider heartguard, frontline..

This is an incrediably common question we get with our girls (own two Danes or is that owned by two danes?) almost where ever we go. I feed my two Evo Red Meat Large Bites which goes for about $50 a bag and lasts a day or two shy of a full month. As a typical rule of thumb, you have lower vet bills as you are feeding quality foods (dogs are not able to digest corn, why must we feed it?), you have lower & smaller amounts of feces to clean up as most of the food is actually used in the body not merely passing thru, what you do clean up is firm lumps not gooey masses, lower vet bills as you have healthier animals.

I got a great dane and its a great dog, he really doesnt eat that much make sure to feed him with good quality food, i feed him with ProPlan its really good it helps him to have a nice bright color, he is strong as h***l really energetic dog, the big ProPlan bag goes close 80 dollars but that will last close to a month and a half. and for all that energy great danes have make sure you take him out to exercise run a little bit play with him so he wont eat your garden. doors, furniture, etc… and not always the most expensive vet is the best. my vet charge me 25 dlls for his shots. If you buy a great dane make sure you will spend some time with him, they are great dogs. good luck
