I just rescued an 8 month old great dane. Hes a little under weight, he has mange.... and was kept outside his entire life. But we took him in knowing all of that. he is going to the vet Thursday... the earlies we could get him in. I have done research on the breed but still want to know more. Is it ok to feed him Iams dog food. I just fill up the dish when its empty, I do have elivated food and water dishes for him. But I was wanting to know what other people feed their great danes, and how much.

Also how can I begin to train him. He hasn't been trained at all.
I ahve only had him 2 days now, and he was eating walmart brand dog food. I switched him to what we feed our other dog, but once he goes to the vet we will put him on what our vet reccomends.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can get for her to chew on and play with, that might last??
Thanks for all the advice....real bones scare me a little, so I want to avoid them. Nylabones (big ones) get chewed up pretty easily, when she concentrates on one. The person that said crate training, mischevious adolesence and separation anxiety? OMG...you know my dog!! (and she is crate trained.....hopefully tho, one day I'll be able to not have her crated??)

I just recently convinced my parents to get a third dog. We were at a petsmart and a rescue group was there and we found a Great Dane that we loved. We drove home told my dad and after a great deal of convincing he said yes. By the time we got back to the store the pretty boy was already adopted. My parents have agreed that I can get another dog anyways, but my mom read that Great Danes eat a great deal of furniture. I was wondering if this was true with a lot of this breed, and i was also wondering if they were mostly good with other smaller dogs. I curently have two 3 year old mutts (Springer spaniel/lab mix), and i love them to death, so i figured why not add to the fun and give a furry friend a home. So if you have any info at all regarding those questions, and any other facts you think I should know I would greatly appreciate it. Thanx..

Bono fits his name well, he's not aggressive at all. She's gotten into some pretty heavy stuff at work, and Bono (he's black and about two years old) makes her feel safer, but he's good with our kids.

My 6 yr old male great dane (neutered) has not calmed down and still acts like a puppy. He has dominance issues and will not obey any commands. When he encounters any other animals his reaction is extreme excitement and aggression. He reacts violently whether he is inside and the other animals are outside or he is outside and within close proximity to anything (dog, cat, bird, squirrel etc). I can't walk him around any other dogs that are being walked; he barks jumps and lunges. I'm at a breaking point today as he has just jumped through a window in the house because he saw 5 deer in the back yard. I've dealt with him for 6 years what can I do other than put him to sleep?
