Is a Golden Retriever or a Cocker Spaniel a Better Family Dog and Also Good With Cats and Young Children?

by Dogs.net on May 4, 2011

My family is looking into getting either a golden retriever or a cocker spaniel. We have 2 cats, one is inside/outside, and a 21 month old son, and another on the way, due in september. Which one would be a better "family dog" and good with cats and young kids?

Golden by far!!!!!!
Cockers are not great ‘family dogs’ and even the breeders will advise against it if they’re honest.
All dogs have tendancies to be not-so-wonderful, but Goldens have a good reputation for a reason :)

Either one will be fine as long as you train them to be what you want them to be. A cocker spaniel may be easier with your young son as they are smaller.

Cocker spaniels used to be a wonderful breed, but they have been so over bred by many bad breeders, that many can be snippy and not good with children. However, I once had a cocker who was great with little kids, but I really had to work with her. Goldens have a wonderful reputation for being good family dogs. Be aware, that both of them shed really bad. Good luck with your decision.

A Golden “RETRIEVER” is exactly what their name implies, a retriever, a hunter. My suggestion would be to get an Older Cocker spaniel or even better, a chihuahua. The most important part of being a good dog owner is to make sure the dog knows that YOU are leader of the pack, not them. If you set it up that YOU are the boss, they will respect you and you can teach them to leave ANYTHING alone including the cats. I have trained large dogs for just over a year now and work with some of the most agressive breeds out there. I can tell a Pit Bull to leave a cat alone and because I have set up the fact that I am the leader of the pack, they respect and listen to me without arguement. Hope this helps.

They’re both great dogs. It’s a close one, but if I were you, I’d go for the golden retriever, because they’re just so great around children, totally reliable and tolerant. I’ve never met a cocker I didn’t like… Nor have I a golden retriever!!
But I heard that cockers are common biters from a vet! Correct me if I’m wrong!!

Good Luck (whatever you get!)

Golden Retrievers are considered “Soft mouthed dogs” bred to retrieive they are more patient and are gentlier…
they are fine with cats, but you also must remember a cat that isnt used to dogs will make itself into a target if it runs or hisses – any dog will be more interested in pursuing an animal that acts that way…

Cockers can be moody and are NOT the dogs you see in Disney pics…

with either one you MUST take the dog for Obedience lessons – dont think you can do it yourself.. you will learn WAY more than “sit” and “stay”

dont get a puppy unless you are fully prepared for house training – you MUST be able to go outside with it every time.. (so you can offer an INSTANT soft treat reward when it pees/poops)
with 1 young kid and another soon behind I wouldnt even consider a puppy at this time.. but its up to you..

always also remember to check your local SPCA for shelter – they may have exactly what you are looking for up for adoption.
