I have a 5 year-old golden retriever. He ,normally , likes water very much, but ,by now ,he had contact with water only in our garden. When I took him to a nearby lake this summer(for the 1st time) he didn't want to go into water deeper than 1/2 m . What can I do about this? I don't want him to be scared.

Well not all Golden’s like to swim. If he is scared and has never swam before it not going to happen now. He’s 5 years old. A bit too late for him to change.
push him 2 the water
you might try walking into the water, to your confort zone, with him. He should follow you. Good luck.
Are you able to carry him into the deeper water once he is in, he might be o.k if you are holding him??. Let him come in as far as he likes, then put your arms under his stomach & carry him out a little further.
not being rude but you jump first then that will encourage him to know it is safe.
My dad taught his labrador to swim by throwing things into the water that it would fetch.. If he likes fetching, find something that will float on the water’s surface. Maybe he’ll get distracted by the toy and froget that he’s scared. If that doesn’t work, try walking out farther and farther with treats in your hand to persuade him. Go out every day and go farther and farther. Every time he makes progress, feed him treats. It’s bound to work eventually.
I had two Labs and a Poodle. The Poodle went into the water with no problem and loved it while the two sissies sat on the shore and watched. I tried throwing sticks and a ball into the water with no luck. I then took two donuts, showed them to the Labs and threw them into the water…worked like a charm.
