A Giant Schnauzer is a highly spirited and outgoing breed, the dog is intelligent, loving and loyal which owners find to be very endearing. The breed is composed and makes an extremely efficient watchdog, hard-working and possessing of the Terrier temperament. The Giant Schnauzer is a breed which is dominant and needs a firm and diligent owner, one with experience handling dogs with this temperament.

The breed can be easy to train if you first earn their trust and respect, the dog responds to positive reinforcement and being supplied with treats when training. The dog must be trained by someone who has professional experience, if they are to reach their full potential and be a good family pet. Giant Schnauzers without proper training and socialization will not adapt well and make a suitable household pet.

When the dog is a puppy, they are dominant and stubborn, testing their owners time and again. To a Giant Schnauzer, it is up to the master to conform to their ideal standard of life. However, once the dog has received adequate professional training they will adapt and become a loving and loyal companion, growing attached to their family and being very protective.

The Giant Schnauzer is a breed that requires a high level of attention and will follow an owner around incessantly. There is no place off limits to the dog, it has an almost compulsive need to be in the same location as an owner at all times. The dog will smother an owner with attention and will not respect the owner's personal space at all. The dog will invade an owner's personal comfort zone and in doing so it keeps them well adjusted and gives them unadulterated joy. It is said that the breed is so in tune with an owner's feelings that can pick up on emotions through a person's facial expressions.

The Giant Schnauzer is an independent dog, true problem solvers and adept at figuring out the solution to a wide variety of problems or situations. There are stories in which an owner reports a Giant Schnauzer has learned to open the door to a cupboard or refrigerator to gain access to a tasty snack! Once the dog figures something out, it can be hard to stay a step ahead of them.

The dogs can become destructive if left alone for extended periods of time. Some Giant Schnauzers have been known to chew their way through an entire sofa if left alone for even a short time! Without proper supervision and stimulation, the dog could put the owner's possessions in serious jeopardy. So, do not leave anything in the dog's grasp that you hold sacred.

While the dog is engaging and amiable with an owner and family, the same cannot be said for when the dog encounters strangers. The dogs are generally reserved and leery around strangers, and are tremendously protective of their family. The breed does not like to feel threatened and can be imposing just because of size alone. The Giant Schnauzer is a breed that is truly unique, if you are a person that can adapt well to a dog of this nature, then this could be a well-suited breed for your family.

Description: The Giant Schnauzer is a large dog standing 23-28 inches tall and weighing around 55-80 lbs, however in Germany the official weight standards are between 77-103 lbs. They should be black in colour or salt and pepper, although their face should always be dark. They are recognisable by how their face is trimmed leaving long eyebrows, and a full moustache. Their bodies are as long as they are tall which gives them their square appearance, their eyes are small and round and set close together, and they have ears that are small and fold over although they can often look like they stick out. However in some countries their ears are cropped which makes them pointy and stand upright. They have long, thick and powerful legs, and their front legs should be straight. History: The Giant Schnauzer was developed by crossing the Standard Schnauzer, the Bouvier des Flandres and the black Great Dane. The name Schnauzer comes from the German word Schnauze, which means muzzle, they were developed for driving cattle in Bavaria, Germany. Although no breed standards were established until 1923, they have been known as far back as 1832. They have also been used as guard dogs by the police and military and to this day are better known as working dogs than as pampered pets.

Temperament: They can be a very loving dog and are highly intelligent. However they are prone to being rather dominant so need an experienced owner who can be the 'alpha' while maintaining a calm and consistent manner. They are exceptionally energetic dogs and if not exercised enough and left on their own they can become destructive. They need plenty of structure in their lives', and should be socialised well with both people and animals from a young age. However if properly trained and well exercised they can be wonderful pets that will always look after you, they are brave, fun-loving and full of character and will always be faithful.

Health Issues: The Giant Schnauzer is prone to quite a few illnesses and diseases including hip dysplasia, epilepsy, incontinence, bloat and cancer. These are all becoming almost common in the breed. They can also suffer from autoimmune diseases, and are especially prone to toe cancer which even when caught early still is fatal to many Giant Schnauzers annually. Their average life expectancy is 12-15 years.

Grooming: Although in some ways they do not need much grooming and are relatively easy to keep there are a few things that are important to do. Due to the fact that the Giant Schnauzer doesn't shed, it's important to regularly brush them to remove any dead undercoat as if this is left it can matt, you should first brush with the lay of the hair, and then against it to lift the coat. Giant Schnauzers who are pets will only need to be clipped down a few times a year, whereas show dogs should be hand stripped. It's also important to clean their faces down after they eat as bits of food can get caught in their moustache which can matt the hair and cause discolouration.

Living Conditions: The Giant Schnauzer is really not suited to apartment life, they are extremely active and need plenty of space to run around as well as twice daily walks or runs. They would do best with a family with no other pets and no young children, unless the dog is well trained. They really cannot be given enough exercise so an active family that can take them out cycling or running for hours would be best. It's also worth remembering that they are tall dogs so can easily grab things off of any low surfaces.

The Giant Schnauzer, also referred to as a Riesenschnauzer, is a German breed that was developed to be a cattle dog. It is suspected that this breed was created by crossing rough-coated shepherd, Bouvier des Flandres, smooth-coated drover dogs, and Great Danes. Today this breed is used as a guard dog, as a watch dog and as a family dog.

This impressive breed stands between 23.5 and 27.5 inches tall and weighs between 70 and 77 pounds. Their coat is short and wiry and it comes in solid black or salt and pepper variations. This is a very loyal and protective breed that can fit into just about any type of family as long as they are socialized properly. To keep the Giant Schnauzer happy and healthy you will need to provide it with plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Giant Schnauzers are actually not gigantic dogs as suggested by their name, but simply a larger and more powerful version of the Standard Schnauzer.

They will only reach the heights of 28 inches for males and 26 inches for females. Giant Schnauzers that go beyond 80 pounds are considered overweight.

Origin:

The breed was developed in the Wurttemberg and Bavarian sections of Germany. These places were agricultural areas. Dogs like the Giant Schnauzers are in high demand as farm workers that help in variety of tasks. They were used as livestock controllers and they aid shepherds with driving livestock to market. They were also used as guard dogs

Appearance and Abilities:

Giant Schnauzers are practically enlarged standard schnauzers. In general appearance, they should resemble their smaller relatives. They are robust, strongly built, nearly square in proportion of body length to height at withers, active, sturdy, and well muscled.

They have a rugged build with a dense weather resistant coat that is wiry. They are powerful dogs and are very useful as working breeds. Giant Schnauzers are versatile and very intelligent. Their high train-ability makes them useful for police work as well.

The Giant Schnauzers coat, distinctive beard and eyebrows are its trademark appearance. The breed is accepted in solid black or salt and pepper.

They have free, balanced and vigorous gaits, with good reach in the forequarters and good driving power in the hindquarters. When moving at a fast trot, a properly built dog will have a strong, firm, and flat gait.

Temperament and Tendencies:

Giant Schnauzers are active and always in high spirits. They are extremely intelligent and have reliable temperaments. This breed loves to work and it naturally wants a job to do.

They have strong territorial; instincts which makes them very good watchdogs. The Giant Schnauzer loves his owners and feels great responsibility to protect them. Fortunately, its remarkable intelligence makes it learns quickly to distinguish between friend and foe.

Giant Schnauzers are bold and valiant creatures. They are courageous and enduring. They have profound alertness with intelligence and reliability. However, they are genuinely composed and deeply loyal to family. They can be amiable and playful with people they are comfortable with. But they are very commanding creatures when aroused.

Training and Care:

The objective in training this dog is to achieve the alpha dog status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in their pack. When we humans live with dogs, we become their pack. The entire pack works together under a single leader. As an owner, always assume the top position to manage and control your Giant Schnauzers behavior.

This breed must be socialized early and extensively to prevent the strong territorial instincts and to keep them from becoming hostile.

Giant Schnauzers need a lot of exercise, requiring daily walks, playtime with another dog or romps in the yard.

The breed requires regular grooming, including brushing and stripping. Giant Schnauzers' owners should be prepared to spend time maintaining the breed's coat.

On the downside, she really requires an experienced handler and early socializing of pets, other dogs and children. She is a dominant dog and will continually test the waters and push the envelope of who is in charge here anyway? She is extremely smart and a fast learner. She requires space to exercise and she is not an apartment dog. At the least, she needs a properly fenced in yard, at the best, plenty of acres to run on. Some people think that she is great with children, others do not trust her, especially with children under about 13 years old. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Giant Schnauzer is 25 to 28 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 60 to 80 pounds. The female ranges from 23 to 26 inches to the withers and 55 to 75 pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Giant Schnauzer is no exception. Be on the look out for Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), orthopedic problems, eye disease, toe cancer, epilepsy and bloat (Gastric Dilation-Volvulus, the second leading killer of dogs, can kill within the hour, this space is too limited for a complete explanation but you should read up on this). Feeding more then once a day and avoiding exercise right after meals may help guard against bloat. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

*Grooming. The Giant Schnauzer has a double coat consisting of a harsh, wiry, hard, very dense outer coat and a soft inner coat. They shed little but need to be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.

She also needs to see a groomer occasionally for clipping.

Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

*Life Span. The Giant Schnauzer can live between 12 and 15 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

*History. The Giant Schnauzer comes from Bavaria, Germany where it was known as the Riesenschnauzer. They may be a cross between the Bouvier des Flandres, black Great Danes, smooth-coated drover dogs and rough-coated shepherds. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1930.
