The German Wirehaired Pointer is a dog breed full of energy and requires a large amount of exercise to be able to burn it off. The best type of family for this dog breed is one that is very active and enjoys spending a large amount of time doing outdoor pursuits. However, if you are not a person who loves being outside and active, there are still many things you can do to keep your German Wirehaired Pointer happy and well engaged. As a hunting breed, the dog is naturally obedient and with early positive reinforcement training, the dog can learn just about anything and will perform many tricks.

If you consider yourself to be an outdoor lover, then keeping your German Wirehaired Pointer exercised should not be difficult at all. Though the dog is a hunting breed, if given the chance to spend a great deal of time outdoors they will be very happy. Hiking is an ideal activity for this type of dog breed and it can easily adapt to any type of terrain and climate. Hiking will give the dog a chance to get the exercise it needs and the outdoor stimulation it craves. It should be noted that simply taking a walk with the dog is not a sufficient form of exercise, but while hiking daily is most of the time unsuitable, when given the chance the dog does enjoy the opportunity.

The obedience of a German Wirehaired Pointer makes it easy to teach the dog to do a great deal of tricks with relative ease. With consistency, the dog will be ready to perform several tricks in no time at all. Because of the dog's hunting background, retrieving is a good place to begin teaching the dog. Instead of bringing back game, the dog can be taught to fetch up a stick or the morning newspaper or even your slippers and pipe! Teaching your German Wirehaired Pointer tricks can be a delightful experience and makes the dog feel useful. Before you begin teaching the dog any type of tricks, you should first make sure you have figured out how to effectively communicate what you'd like the dog to do. Since the dog breed is a quick study, training should be an easy process. Remember, that with training any type of dog breed, consistency, repetition and time are all very important.

If you are thinking about adopting a German Wirehaired Pointer, there are some things you need to keep in mind. The dog is large and well-muscled, and thrives on vigorous exercise, becoming aggressive and overly hyper if not exercised enough. The breed makes an excellent watchdog, but also suffers from severe separation anxiety when left alone too much. The dog is strong-willed and has a mind of its own which is tempered by a dependable and steady nature. Once you have given much thought to everything entailed in owning a dog of this breed, only then can you determine if a German Wirehaired Pointer would be right for your family.

The German Wirehaired Pointer in not a good apartment dog. They need plenty of exercise and a large properly fenced in yard would be ideal. They can tend to bark so they will either need to be far out in the country or taught to be quieter at an early age. They can tend to be one person dogs. They are good watch dogs and also do well with children and other pets, especially if they are well socialized when young. As a reminder, never leave children unsupervised with any puppy or dog.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male German Wirehaired Pointer is 24 to 26 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder). The female ranges from 22 to 24 inches to the withers and both sexes range from 60 to 70 pounds, the males being heavier.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the German Wirehaired Pointer is no exception. Be on the look out for Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), Entropion, (hereditary disorder where eyelid, usually lower one, rolls inward and irritates the cornea and can cause visual problems. Surgery can correct this condition but may disqualify the dog from shows), ear infections and possibly skin cancer. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The German Wirehaired Pointer has a double almost waterproof coat. The outer coat is wiry and the inner coat has good insulation properties but is thinner in warmer months. They are average shedders and should be brushed about twice a week. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, avoid mats and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her. Additionally, she needs her dead outer hair plucked occasionally so a trip to a professional groomer every few months will help keep her looking good.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

Life Span

The German Wirehaired Pointer can live between 10 and 12 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

History

The German Wirehaired Pointer originated in Germany and is thought to be a combination of Poodle, Foxhound, Terrier and the German Shorthaired Pointer. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1959.

German Wirehaired Pointer

The German Wirehaired Pointer is both an amiable companion and a tough bird dog. Like all sporting dogs, this canine has seemingly endless energy and can roam the land and run for hours. Because of this high energy out-put, the German Wirehaired Pointer must have daily exercise and live with a family that enjoys spending time outdoors.

Considered to be a bit stubborn (in a good way), the German Wirehaired Pointer makes an excellent watchdog and guard dog. Because of these qualities, the breed tends to be quite overprotective of its owners and does not fare well with people it doesn't know. The same goes for strange dogs that crosses paths with a German Wirehaired Pointer.

But despite it's protective personality and aggressive attitude towards strange people and animals, the German Wirehaired Pointer makes an excellent family pet that can be playful with children (so long as the children are not overly aggressive during play).

A Brief History Of The German Wirehaired Pointer

There was a time when game bird hunting was not accessible to the average man. But soon enough all levels of society were able to freely hunt and spot birds for prey. For such a day's hunt, an excellent hunting breed was needed. The quest for a talented and versatile hunting dog made its popularity known in Germany, which produced the German Wirehaired Pointer - one of Germany's most successful sporting breeds.

The German Wirehaired Pointer was created out of the hunter's desire to have a dog that could find and point to upland game, track injured game, face tough prey, retrieve from land or water, all the while making an excellent watch dog. In addition to function, the breed needed to maintain a rough, durable and wiry coat that could protect the dog when hunting through heavy brush and bristle.

The most heavily influential ancestor of the breed was the Pudelpointer, which was a combination of the Pointer and the German Pudel. It was then crossed with the Griffon, the early German Wirehaired Pointer, Polish Water Dog, and the Stichelhaar. Although officially recognized in Germany during the late 1920s, the German Wirehaired Pointer did not make its way to the United States for recognition until 1959.

Upkeep Requirements For The German Wirehaired Pointer

As mentioned in the beginning of this breed profile, owning a German Wirehaired Pointer means providing the dog with tons of daily exercise. Typical walks on the leash will not be enough to expend the energy this canine needs each day.

The best living situation for the German Wirehaired Pointer to have is plenty of property to run around on during the day. This dog can do quite well when living outside. Because of its rough, wiry coat it can far well in colder temperatures, but as with any dog, sleeping inside with the rest of the family is advised.

Health Concerns For The German Wirehaired Pointer

Occasionally seen in the German Wirehaired Pointer is CHD, but overall this is a very healthy breed. Minor issues that could show up are hypothyroidism. Rarely seen, but possible, are elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion, entropion, seizures, and heart disease. Veterinarians suggest having your German Wirehaired Pointer tested for potential cardiac, elbow, hip, and thyroid problems. Healthy German Wirehaired Pointer dogs show an average lifespan of between twelve and fourteen years.

History

During the middle of the 19th century, hunters in Germany desired to develop a dog that was suited to hunting in different terrains. Some of the breeds used to produce the German Wirehaired Pointer were Wirehaired Griffon, Foxhounds, Pudelpointer, Stichelhaar, and Deutsch-Kurzhaar. The breed has a rough coat that helps it handle cold weather and difficult environs.

In 1928, it was accepted into the German Kartell for dogs. This breed came to the U.S during the 1920's. The German Drahthaar Club of America started in 1953. The AKC accepted this breed in 1959.

General Looks

These are muscled dogs of medium build. The head is long and the ears stay hanging near the head. The eyes are dark. The paws are webbed.

Is This Your Breed?

It is a faithful and affable breed. The German Wirehaired Pointer grows close to its owner or family. It likes being close to people and enjoys their company. It has abundant energy and needs daily exercise. Walking each day is necessary and a fenced yard. The coat needs brushing frequently during the week.

Coat

The coat resists weather and water. The undercoat is thick and protects from cold during the winter, but thins out in the summer to cool the dog. The outer coat is rough, straight, wiry and up to two inches long.

Color

The coat color is white and liver.

Locomotion

The dog is gauged at a medium trot. The trot is fluid and smooth with good drive.

Personality

It is an enthusiastic student. It is affectionate, independent, and smart. They like something to do and enjoy training and working. They can be standoffish with strangers.
