German Shorthaired Pointer > Weimaraner or German Shorthaired Pointer?

Weimaraner or German Shorthaired Pointer?

by Dogs.net on December 27, 2011

my Family and I have chosen to live in the countryside in Ireland. we have decided that we want an energetic loving dog and narrowed it down to these two breeds. we know that they require a lot of exercise which is not a problem if we have quite a lot of land. someone will be at home always to take care of the dog and make sure it gets proper attention and exercise, but, a lot of children (6+) will be coming into our home and we want to know which breed is best around children while supervised. thank you weimaraner or german shorthaired pointer?

GSHP is better around families and children.

Both are energetic but having had Short hairs for more then 20 yrs in the family and friends with weims I will say that the Shorts are able to calm down in a family setting better. Weims just don;t sem to be able to control there energy as well in my experiences. Shorts also seem to be more tolerant of kids then Weims.

Honestly, either one of these breeds would have the potential to be exactly what you are looking for. Weimaraners are sometimes slightly more high-strung. Each dog is an individual though. I dearly love both of these breeds. I believe that you would be satisfied with either. Your decision will probably be based on physical preferences.

I love weimaraners, but they can be clingy and pig-headeddely stubborn! I would say the pointer would be the better option.

Had a German short haired pointer, hunter and he was the best dog ever! He protected the family and let my sister 4 climb all over him. She would b outside playing and bring a huge hevy blanket outside and laydown w him on the ground and cover him up and they would nap. It would be 90 degrees outside n he wouldn’t leave her o try to get the blanket off of him. He was the best dog ever! He even kept aniamals( rabbits cats racoons) out of our yard. I miss him soo much ;(
