My father and I are looking for a companion to our elderly dog Maggie. We would love a german shorthaired pointer lab mix! We met one and fell absolutely in love with it and decided that we would like to have one! So if we could find one in Minnesota that would be AMAZING!!

You met a mutt of this mix once. But mutts are unpredictable. You met a great mutt, doesn’t mean that all dogs of this mix are going to be wonderful. You could end up with a very hyper puppy with a hound prey drive. And puppies tend to drive older dogs absolutely crazy. I suggest you check out your local animal shelter. Lots of lab mixes need homes.

Just remember that not all dogs are alike. Even if you find the same mix, he/she will NOT be the same as the dog you met.

EDIT: Also, I don’t reccomend getting a puppy to keep an elderly dog company. Puppies are hyper, chewy, and take a lot of work. Older dogs just want to relax.

Try finding a dog in the 2+ year range.

Looking for a GSP/Lab mix male puppy is quite a tall order. How about an adult mix that is either male or female or a plain old GSP???

Female adult mix:

IMHO a young adult dog would be a great companion for your elderly dog—a high energy pup (which is what a labxgsp cross IS by definition) might be fun for a bit, but could turn out to be a pain for Maggie and would require a great deal of time and energy from you.

Was the mix you met an adult or a puppy?

I have had a lab mix and a purebred gsp and I would suggest you try to find a male adult gsp from a rescue that fosters. GSP males tend to be big, loveable lugs and I think one would be good for Maggie.

You can try petfinder.com as they have a bunch of GSPs listed or contact a GSP rescue directly and see if they have a match in foster or coming into foster.

Here is WI GSP rescue

Good luck.
