I Just Got a German Shorthaired Pointer. I Have a Few Questions.?

by Dogs.net on December 22, 2011

I'm about to pick up my 9 week old male german shorthaired pointer. Both of his parents are from champion blood lines and have been hunting since forever. I was courious in where I can find out how to train him to hunt. Or if anyone knows of anyother websites or books or has personal information besides what the common websites say about the breed then please let me know about that as well. Thanks so much for your time and info. Also I have a 10 month old boxer, im pretty sure they should get along really well. thanks again.

The best people to ask are your breeders since they actively train and hunt their dogs.

I would ask the breeder if they know. Also I know when I was taking my pup to his obedience the trainer offer a variety of classes and one of them was how to hunt with your dog. If they breeder doesn’t know ask your vet or contact some trainers maybe one of them can point you in the right direction. I think it is great that you are wanting to do an activity with your dog. I am looking into doing frisbee or agility with mine. Also try animalplanet.com I know they have been doing a show on Dogs 101 where they tell you alot about the breed, they might have something on their website! Good luck! I have a 5 month old American Eskimo mix and now looking for a second pup! I think they will do fine together, think of it this way they can play with each other and wear each other out! Good Luck!
