I have a German shorthaired pointer pup, and I think we got a steal of a deal on her with her bloodlines and price. But I have been looking into getting another one to keep my girl company and for another hunting partner. We love the breed!! But I'm looking and trying to figure out what a resonable price is for a purebred shorthaired pointer pup? One from a good breeder, who has all vetting done, tail docked, dews removed, and AKC registered! (we want to enter into competitions/shows) I see some that are 350$ and some up too 1000$ and I'm wondering if the ones who are lower priced are just people trying to quickly get rid of them and make a few bucks? I know I'm asking alot of questions but it just makes me wonder? What do you think is a reasonable price for a good quality pup? Thanks

It really depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a good, show quality dog, get ready to spend a lot. I got my Bluetick Coonhound baby for $350 because they aren’t huge in the AKC show ring yet since they have just been added (and the Treeing Walker will be added as of January 1, 2012!). His breeder breeds hunting Coonhounds and doesn’t show them. They are show quality pups, but it’s just not his passion. A lot of AKC show dogs can sell for a few thousand. Not all, but most. I wish you good luck in your search for a new pup! Maybe we will meet in the show ring one day!
I agree it depends on what your looking for. I find that generally speaking, non breed specific, that most of the low end dogs are either from a BYB or Puppy Mill. You run great risks buying from those people I would try to find a breeder who is familiar with the work you intend to use your dog for. If you want a show dog, buy from someone who is showing. They will be able to show you what they are showing, and how well they do in the ring/events. I would look into at least 5 breeders before picking one. Do not evaluate the dogs on cost, but on the soundness of the dogs the breeders own and are showing/working. Prices will vary, and honestly it will all depend on what your willing to spend and on what exactly you desire. Lower prices don’t always mean lesser quality (just generally) and higher prices do not always mean better quality. Again, do your homework and get to know some breeders in your area that have dogs you like. Ask them all these questions and see how they answer them as well.
Good Luck
Typically, you wont find a well bred one for $350.
However, that does not mean that all $1000 ones are well bred either.
It’s really up to you to do your homework and really figure out which is best for your buck so to say.
A well bred dog will:
- Have titled parents (not just “bloodlines”)
- Be registered with a reputable breed club (not ConKC)
- Parents will have had all necessary genetic testing done (OFA, CERF etc.)
Since you are looking for a show prospect, a good breeder will be able to let you know which would be the most promising dog for you.
