Where Is the Best Place to Get a German Shepherd?

by Dogs.net on May 16, 2012

I want to buy a nice female german shepherd that would make a great addition to the family. Where would be the best place to buy one that is not very expensive, but would be a healthy, loving, loyal companion? If you have one and it is just an awesome dog please tell me where you got it especially if you live in Ohio.

Definitely a shelter or a German Shepard Rescue place. You can always buy an older puppy from a breeder. The older they are the less expensive.

Whatever you do, buy one from a local breeder. There should be one in the area. Most of the time they are cheeper from a breeder because you don’t have the middle man to pay. And they are a lot more healthy. A pet shop is not a safe place to buy a dog. Too many sick dogs come from them. I never had any luck anyway.

1. From a shelter or breed-specific rescue. Can’t think of a more deserving place for your $. You won’t believe the dogs that end up in rescue, or dumped at shelters. Check http://www.petfinder.com and use the sarch by zip code / breed to get started.
2. From a breeder who blows you away with the care that they take with their dogs. There will most likely be a waiting list for the pups. The breeder will be knowledgeable about the history of the breed and will be active in dog sports (agility, tracking, obedience, rally, and herding all come to mind for a GSD). They are not eager to make a buck, but rather in producing dogs with fine temperaments and structure. They will be asking you a lot of questions and may or may not accept you as a potential family for one of their dogs. Does this sound like a pain in the ass? Maybe! But the care that this breeder takes is done to ensure a great home for a great dog. Good luck in your search.

German Shepherd Rescue has many great pets. The last one I bought came from a breeder in Pa. but I show and multi title my dogs so am looking for a specific dog in his case a sound, healthy solid black dog of german bloodlines. But my local GSD Rescue gets in many great dogs and I have rescued and placed several GSDs myself. Diane Roberts is the eastern half of the USA Rescue coordinator, her email is dianeroberts.gsd@verizon.net. And her GSD Rescue website will be below. You can also google german shepherd rescue your state or go to AKC for a list of breeders.
