My parents recently lost our family dog, Joey, about 2 weeks ago. Although I know they are not ready to get another dog for a few months, I wanted to help them find a place where they could get the same kind of dog Joey was, a german shepherd collie mix. The place we got him 14 years ago no longer sells mix breeds like him, any idea where we can find a puppy of the same breed?
I know about pet finder.com but I've been having problems finding anything in the area. I suppose what I'm looking for is a breeder so I can make sure it's not a puppy mill operation.

heave you tried calling your local animal shelter to see if they had any and also you can try petfinder.com
That’s a pretty common mix, if you keep checking the shelters you’ll find one.
Petfinder is good. I’d think the biggest difficulty you’d have is finding a puppy of that mix.
I’d also contact local German Shepherd and Collie rescues. They might know of an accidental breeding.
Since you have several months, maybe you could post on Craig’s List. Say what you’re looking for. If someone’s dog was accidentally bred they could contact you.
Just don’t fall for an irresponsible breeder breeding mixed breeds and trying to charge thousands. At most I’d think a puppy of a mixed breed would be worth $200–and that because he’s a puppy.
Just luck!
ADD: There are almost no responsible breeders who breed mixed breeds. So, any breeder you find probably won’t be “good.” If I were you, I’d put my feelers out for an accidental breeding.
Really, the puppy from an accidental breeding would probably be roughly equal to a puppy from a backyard breeder. The difference is that a person whose dog was accidentally bred won’t charge you stupendous fees for a mixed breed. I personally would have a big issue supporting someone who is purposely breeding dogs without health testing the parents first.
I’d still strongly recommend you contact both national and local German Shepherd and Collie rescues. Maybe nothing will come of it, but there’s a good chance they know where the mixes of their breeds are.
This site has shelters all over South, North and Central Jersey …………..

Go to your local shelter. They have plenty of mixed breeds looking for loving homes!
Sweetie, a ‘breeder’ of a mixed dog is just as bad as a puppymill.
I am in NJ and I volunteer at a shelter. Would you like me to call around my contacts and try to help you?
Male/female/how old?
Email me.
EDIT: Here’s one, at my shelter!!! If you like his looks, let me know and I’ll go ‘interview’ him for you.
